C2a: G'wriss - Alien Starship Encounter is a mission in Wing Commander Prophecy. It follows C1: G'wriss - Convoy Rescue and is followed by C3a: G'wriss - Cruiser Assault if flown successfully, C3b: G'wriss - Hydra Fleet Assault if failed.

Mission Briefing

The comm relay station in the H'hrass system is apparently no longer transmitting. The Midway must reach this system in order to repair the station and send a distress call to Confed. An enemy cruiser group has pursued us through the H'rekkah jump point and will intercept the Midway before we can reach the H'hrass jump point. Due to their assault on the Confed convoy, the cruiser has fallen behind its destroyer escorts. Your Alpha Wing will proceed to NAV 1 and engage the escorts' fighter screen. When you have broken through, eliminate the destroyers' turret and shield defenses so Bravo Wing's bombers can attack the enemy destroyers. Return to the Midway when your mission is complete.

C2a: G'wriss — Alien Starship Encounter

Finley (RR) — Finley's at the bar, drinking like a fish and reeking of sarcasm. You join her and listen to her relate the recent findings of the Science Division — which don't amount to much in the grand scheme of things. She explains the ancient Kilrathi prophecies and you hear, for the second time, the mention of Kn'thrak.

In the middle of your conversation, all pilots are called to the Briefing Room. But before you part ways, you manage to get through to her, and she decides against that last drink.

Briefing. An Alien task force has followed the Midway into G'wriss, but the cruiser has become separated from its destroyer escorts. You're sent out to escort a bomber wing to get the destroyers before they can regroup.

Notes

This is the mission you get if you protected the Midway from all harm in the previous mission. It's a tough battle, but all the enemies are nicely bunched up at a single NAV point.

  • On all bomber escort missions, your priorities are
  1. Eliminate enough enemy fighter escorts to clear the way for the bombers
  2. Destroy the enemy cap-ship's shield emitter
  3. Destroy all cap ship turrets
  • By all means, use your missiles early to clear out those fighters quick.
  • In general, concentrate on larger escort ships first. Their more powerful weapons are more likely to get past the bombers' defenses.
  • Once you finish off the enemy fighters, your Autopilot light will pop on, but remember, you've only done half the job you came to do. Don't bug out until the job is over.
  • If you take too long to finish off the destroyers, the mission will be scrubbed and Anderson will call you back to the Midway.

Success go to C3a. / Failure go to C3b.

Notes

  • Here you have a nice easy mission, at least compared to the two you could get if the Midway got damaged in the previous mission. The method is simple : Take out the enemy fighters, take out the capship's shield emitters, and rather than sit around getting bored waiting for the Shrikes to launch their torpedoes, take out some turrets. Focus on the missile turrets first though. You can cycle through turrets, shield emitters, and other targets by pressing R while the capship is targeted.
  • One NAV point, one wave of fighters. Nothing to stop you using your missiles freely. Perfect.
  • Barracudas are slow, bulky ships which can deal a lot of damage if you get in front of them, but due to their speed, you can get behind them and unload Dragonflies without taking a scratch.
  • Your autopilot light will come on as soon as all of the fighters are destroyed. Be sure not to engage autopilot until the Orcas are destroyed, otherwise you'll fail the mission.

Comments : Dragonflies work pretty well for turrets, too! At 100cm per shot, for the Orca, you need 4 for gun turrets (400cm), 6 for missile turrets (600cm) and 8 for shield emitters (800cm). So with good aiming to can take out several turrets in one pass!
