COLONEL JACOB "HAWK" MANLEY: Come on you two! Get this thing out of here! Give it here. Right here. Let's get this thing out of here. Come on!

CAPTAIN WILLIAM EISEN: Boy, they took a lot of hits.

COLONEL TAMARA "PANTHER" FARNSWORTH: We need more retard-foam on the top deck!

COLONEL JACOB "HAWK" MANLEY: Forget it! It'll be more use down here in the missile bay. Medics needed here!

COLONEL TAMARA "PANTHER" FARNSWORTH: Check him! Check him!

COLONEL JACOB "HAWK" MANLEY: Medics! Get the medics here! We need a stretcher.

CAPTAIN WILLIAM EISEN: C'mon, lets give them a hand.

COLONEL JACOB "HAWK" MANLEY: Get a stretcher! Get a stretcher!

CAPTAIN WILLIAM EISEN: Excuse me. Captain Eisen, from the Lexington.

COLONEL JACOB "HAWK" MANLEY: You got here just in time. Keep that detail right there. We weren't going to wait on that jump.

MAJOR TODD "MANIAC" MARSHALL: Looks like you guys ran into some trouble

COLONEL TAMARA "PANTHER" FARNSWORTH: We had a surprise visit from a Confed frigate and her escorts. This is Colonel Jacob Manley. I'm Colonel Tamara Farnsworth.

COLONEL CHRISTOPHER BLAIR: I recognize those names. It's Panther and Hawk.

1ST LIEUTENANT WINSTON "VAGABOND" CHANG: From the Astoria System?

COLONEL TAMARA "PANTHER" FARNSWORTH: That's right. And you're the famous 'Heart of the Tiger'.

COLONEL JACOB "HAWK" MANLEY: Look, I'd love to stand around here and play 'get-to-know-you' but.... Stay right there! We got some problems to take care of.

CAPTAIN WILLIAM EISEN: If you can direct us to Captain Dominguez. He's expecting me.

COLONEL TAMARA "PANTHER" FARNSWORTH: Captain Dominguez was on the bridge during the attack.

COLONEL JACOB "HAWK" MANLEY: He didn't make it. Anybody on the bridge or in the bays didn't survive. Two-thirds of the crew.

MAJOR TODD "MANIAC" MARSHALL: Jeez...

COLONEL TAMARA "PANTHER" FARNSWORTH: Captain Dominguez did brief us on your possible defection.

COLONEL JACOB "HAWK" MANLEY: Your deal was with him though. We gotta gotta talk things over with the crew before you guys get too cozy. Understood?

1ST LIEUTENANT VELINA SOSA: Hawk, Panther? We need you on the flight deck, please.

COLONEL JACOB "HAWK" MANLEY: We'll finish this later.

1ST LIEUTENANT WINSTON "VAGABOND" CHANG: C'mon. We could use some extra hands.

-

CAPTAIN WILLIAM EISEN: I fought with Captain Dominguez 40 years ago during the Venice Offensive. Now he's dead at the hands of one of his own. What is all of this coming to?

COLONEL CHRISTOPHER BLAIR: I was hoping you'd be able to tell me, now that I've turned my back on Confed. Paulsen said you were a spy.

CAPTAIN WILLIAM EISEN: Me? A detective, maybe. They were feeding us a lot of bogus information. The last couple of days I've been checking out mission data, coded transmissions, fleet movements. I've got all the information right here. This could stop a full blown war.

COLONEL CHRISTOPHER BLAIR: TBut you don't know what it means?

CAPTAIN WILLIAM EISEN: Some of the pieces are missing. But what I do know is this: this clash between the Border Worlds and Confedis being provoked by certain elements within Confed.

COLONEL CHRISTOPHER BLAIR: Why didn't you tell me?

CAPTAIN WILLIAM EISEN: Because I have no idea who they are. All I knew was that my defection could end up being suicidal. I couldn't ask you to put yourself in that position. You had to decide that for yourself, when the time came.

COLONEL CHRISTOPHER BLAIR: I made my choice, sir. I have no regrets.

CAPTAIN WILLIAM EISEN: Well, Colonel, I hope you never do.

COLONEL CHRISTOPHER BLAIR: I better get up top. See if I can help out.

CAPTAIN WILLIAM EISEN: Yeah, I'll lend out a hand down here.

midgame: approaching the BWS INTREPID -d1 Eisen's shuttle heads towards the Union of Border Worlds' Intrepid, followed by Blair's, Catscratch's and Vagabond's fighters.

The Intrepid -- an old destroyer recently converted to carrier -- has just concluded a terrible clash with Confederation fighters. The ship has sustained a great deal of damage: The top level (containing the bridge and berths) has been all but totalled. Fires still burn on parts of the ship.

The shuttle and the fighters swoop in and land on the Launch Deck...

And the Intrepid hits the jump point...

midgame: INTREPID launch deck -d1 Blair, Vagabond, Eisen (carrying a metal briefcase), Maniac, and Catscratch climb out of their ships amid chaos: the surviving INTREPID crew dashes around carrying fire extinguishers, tools, equipment -- even bodies on stretchers.

two pilots seem to be in charge: colonel tamara farnsworth (callsign: PANTHER) -- Late 20s-mid 30s -- an attractive woman who's tough, honest, and can hold her own with "the boys"; and colonel Jacob manley (callsign: HAWK) -- Mid 30s -- who's got brass balls and is only interested in winning, not caring much how he does it.

both are Kilrathi War veterans born in the Border Worlds -- and both shout orders to other crew members:

Panther We need more retard-foam up on the top deck!

Hawk Forget it! It'll be more use down here in the missile bay.

as the emergency activity continues, they come forward, eyeing Eisen, Blair and the others with a certain amount of wariness.

Eisen I appreciate your immediate clearance. (salutes) Captain William Eisen, recently in command of the Confederation Forces' Lexington.

hawk You got here just in time ... we weren't going to wait on that jump.

Maniac (eyeing the damage) Looks like you guys ran into some trouble.

Hawk shoots a look at Maniac, like he already can't believe this guy.

Panther We got a surprise visit from a Confed frigate and her escorts. (beat) This is Colonel Jacob Manley. I'm Colonel Tamara Farnsworth--

Blair I recognize those names. You're Panther and Hawk.

Vagabond From the Astoria System?

Blair nods and gestures to Panther and Hawk.

Blair These two Border Worlders kicked a lot of Kilrathi butt during the War.

Panther (smiles) And you're the famous Heart of the Tiger.

Hawk (sarcastic) Look, I'd love to play 'get-to-know-you' ... but we got a few problems to take care of.

Eisen Just direct us to Captain Dominguez. He's expecting me.

Panther and Hawk share a grim look for a beat.

Panther Captain Dominguez was on the bridge during the attack.

Hawk He didn't make it. No one on the bridge or in the berths survived ... two-thirds of our crew.

Maniac (winces) Jeez...

blair's been in this spot, too many times... he just bites his lip, because there's nothing he can say, nothing that will be adequate.

Panther Captain Dominguez did brief us on your ... possible defection.

Hawk But your deal was with him. (beat) We gotta discuss things with our crew before you guys get too cozy--

the voice of the ship's comm officer, sosa, is heard over the p.a. system:

sosa (v.o.) Hawk, Panther? We need you on the top deck. Another fire's broken out. ÿ Hawk (to Eisen) We'll finish this later.

they take off.

Vagabond C'mon. They could use some extra hands.

he leads Maniac and Catscratch Away, leaving Blair and a glum Eisen on the launch deck. launch deck - Eisen -d1 Blair makes a move to follow THE OTHERS but notices Eisen just sadly staring at the floor.

Eisen I met Dominguez 40 years ago, during the Venice Offensive. Fighting a common enemy. Now...? He's dead at the hands of other humans. What's it coming to?

Blair I was hoping you'd be able to tell me -- now that I've turned my back on Confed. (beat) Paulsen said you were a spy --

Eisen Detective, maybe. You could probably tell I was having grave doubts about the missions we were flying. We were being fed a lot of biased information. For the past few days, I've been collecting mission data, coded transmissions, tracking fleet movements. (gestures to briefcase) Got it all right here. Maybe it can stop a full-blown war.

Blair can see that the captain's not entirely confident.

Blair But you don't know what it all means.

Eisen I'm still missing a lot of the pieces. But I do know these clashes between Confed and the Border Worlds ... they're being provoked ... by certain elements within Confed. (beat) But I have no idea who they are.

Blair Why didn't you tell me--?

Eisen I'm sorry, Colonel. Maybe I should have. But the only thing I could be certain of was that my defection had a good chance of being suicidal. (beat) I couldn't ask you to put yourself in that position... (beat) You had to decide for yourself ... when the time came.

Blair puts his hand on Eisen's shoulder.

Blair I made my choice, sir. I don't regret it.

Eisen I hope you never will, Colonel.

Blair I'm going up top -- see if I can help out.

Blair heads for the control bay.
