Transcript

TELAMON CITIZEN: It didn't take long after the bombs dropped.

COLONEL CHRISTOPHER BLAIR: Bombs? Well, this place is still standing... The airstrips in one piece... It doesn't look like you've been touched.

TELAMON DOCTOR: The attackers didn't blow up anything, Colonel -- they used bioweapons.

LIEUTENANT COLONEL GASH DEKKER: So, no offense, doc, how come you're still breathing?

TELAMON DOCTOR: TI've been asking myself the same question. What's the pattern here? This is not random. The autopsies have been showing commonalities. Things like: percentage of body fat, bone brittleness, eyesight, sperm and egg count. Everything... genetically determined. What do you know about nanotechnology? And bioconvergence?

COLONEL CHRISTOPHER BLAIR: Bioconvergence? Well, it's fairly new. That about covers what I know.

TELAMON DOCTOR: Well, I think the attackers dispersed replicating nanobots into the atmosphere -- billions of 'em.

COLONEL CHRISTOPHER BLAIR: Nanobots?

TELAMON DOCTOR: Yeah, think of them as computers -- small as atoms. They get into your body and start a genome comparison of your DNA helix. If they don't like what they find, they start attacking your RNA. Your cells... your cells stop replicating and then begin killing each other. Let me show you. Your body becomes a battleground, and in a matter of hours...

COLONEL CHRISTOPHER BLAIR: So how come we're not like... this?

TELAMON DOCTOR: Thank your parents. The nanobots have been programmed to look for certain genetic characteristics: low body fat, good eyesight, and so on. My guess is they can be EPROM'd to do anything. Any trigger in the DNA strand will do. You want... you want to weed out the skinny folks in the world? People with iron-poor blood? You just tweak the code.

TELAMON CIVILIAN: They came out of nowhere -- in unmarked ships. They dropped canisters like this.

COLONEL CHRISTOPHER BLAIR: How many of your people were affected?

TELAMON DOCTOR: I'd say 90%.

LIEUTENANT COLONEL GASH DEKKER: This is a ghost planet now, boss. I've seen this a couple of times during the War. If the rest of these people don't clear out soon, they'll all be committing suicide in a year or so.

COLONEL CHRISTOPHER BLAIR: Admiral Wilford will get a full report: I'm sure he will act appropriately.

LIEUTENANT COLONEL GASH DEKKER: Hard to figure out what appropriate even means, after you see something like this.

COLONEL CHRISTOPHER BLAIR: It's a good thing the Kilrathi never figured out this stuff.

TELAMON DOCTOR: Colonel, thank you.

the citizen #1 leads them forward through the tent doorway and now we see...

rows of body bags littering the interior... while new bodies keep being brought in...

blair and dekker push through the doorway... their jaws drop in disbelief...

DOCTORS move around with their medical instruments, but clearly this is all after-the-fact, autopsy work. there ain't much to be done for the folks beneath the plastic...

except to figure out what did this to them...

blair and dekker walk the makeshift morgue with citizenÿ#1.

citizen #1 There's only a few of us left. It didn't take long after the bombs dropped--

Blair Bombs? This place is still standing. The airstrip's in one piece. You don't look like you've been touched.

a doctor, overhearing the conversation, moves in...

doctor The attackers didn't blow up anything. They used bioweapons.

dekker So, no offense, but how come you're still breathing?

doctor I've been asking myself that. What's the pattern here? (beat) This isn't random. The autopsies are showing commonalities. Things like ... percentage of body fat ... bone brittleness ... eyesight ... sperm and egg count... (beat) Everything genetically determined. (beat) What do you know about nanotechnology? And bioconvergence?

blair's ears perk up at the term "bioconvergence."

blair Pretty new stuff -- that about covers what I know.

doctor I think the attackers dispersed replicating nanobots into the atmosphere. Billions of 'em.

blair Nanobots?

doctor Think of them as computers small as atoms. They get into your body and start a genome comparison of your DNA helix. If they don't like what they find, they start attacking your RNA. Your cells stop replicating and begin killing each other.

he lifts a sheet off a body, revealing a desiccated corpse.

doctor Your body becomes a battleground. In a matter of hours ...

he shakes his head, unable to finish the sentence. The results are very apparent...

Blair (re corpse) So how come we're not like ... this?

doctor Thank your parents. The nanobots have been programmed to look for certain genetic characteristics--low body fat, good eyesight, and so on. My guess? They could be EPROM'd to do anything. Any trigger in the DNA strand would do. Want to weed out the skinny folk in this world? The ones with iron-poor blood? Just tweak the code. ÿÿ citizen #1 They came out of nowhere -- these unmarked ships... Dropped those canisters.

he points to where another doctor is scanning a large metal tube with instruments. Blair turns back to the doctor. ÿÿ blair How many of your people...?

doctor I'd say 90% got the genetic axe.

Dekker pulls blair off to the side.

dekker This is a ghost planet now. Saw a couple during the War. If the rest of 'em don't ship out, they'll all be committing suicide in a year or so.

blair Admiral Wilford will get a full report. He'll act appropriately.

dekker Hard to figure out what 'appropriate' even means, after you see something like this. Good thing the Kilrathi never figured out this stuff.

pull back, so we can see the rows of body bags... and listen to the silence...
