ADMIRAL TOLWYN: Your presence for the christening of the Vesuvius will be a great inspiration to her crew, Senator.
MAJOR JAMES "PALADIN" TAGGART: She's a bonney ship. Tell me, is there news? Have there been more skirmishes in the Border Worlds?
ADMIRAL TOLWYN: News of the worst kind, I'm afraid: betrayal. It appears that our great hero of the Kilrathi war has defected to the Union of Border Worlds.
MAJOR JAMES "PALADIN" TAGGART: Blair? Defected? I find that hard to believe. He was always a hot head, but what on earth induced him to... what the devil is going on out there?
ADMIRAL TOLWYN: The intelligence I've collected is erratic, unreliable. Things fall apart. The center cannot hold. Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world. The best lack all conviction.
MAJOR JAMES "PALADIN" TAGGART: Whilst the worst possess a passionate intensity - Yeats. And you have no idea who's behind all of this?
ADMIRAL TOLWYN: One thing is clear, Senator: the Border Worlds militia grows increasingly more aggressive. A grave mistake.
MAJOR JAMES "PALADIN" TAGGART: I never knew Blair to be rash.
ADMIRAL TOLWYN: Betrayal is always a mystery.
MAJOR JAMES "PALADIN" TAGGART: We are running out of time, Admiral. A declaration of war against the Border Worlds has been laid before the Assembly. The vote will be in seven days. The outcome of that vote will largely be determined by your report.
ADMIRAL TOLWYN: Let's hope that war is not our only option.

midgame: confed hq - Tolwyn's office -g1 Tolwyn stares out the viewport at the pair of super-carriers. The ST. HELENS is still under construction -- but the VESUVIUS looks nearly ready to sail...
instead of happiness, however, Tolwyn's face momentarily reveals a high degree of uneasiness. masking this, he turns to the man standing next to him at the viewport -- paladin.

paladin It's a magnificent ship...
Tolwyn turns away from the viewport. paladin can see he's troubled. ÿÿ paladin Any news on the Border World skirmishes?

paladin is visibly surprised.
paladin My god. The lad was always strong-willed ... but this is shocking. What could drive him to such an act? What is going on out there?
tolwyn retreats to his desk.
Tolwyn (apologetic) The intelligence I've managed to collect is ... erratic ... unreliable... (beat) 'Things fall apart; the center cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world... The best lack all conviction...'
he slams his fist on the desk in anger and frustration.
Paladin (picking up the quote) 'And what rough beast...Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?' (beat) You're still not certain who's behind the troubles then?

paladin (thinking) Strange... The Colonel has never been rash...
