CHIEF TECH ROBERT "PLIERS" SYKES: That'll work fine. Well, if it ain't the new Confed flyboy. Fightin' on our side, eh?

COLONEL CHRISTOPHER BLAIR: Yeah, the name's Blair.

CHIEF TECH ROBERT "PLIERS" SYKES: Well, hooo-ray. Guess that means we're gonna win this thing after all, right? Welcome aboard, kid. Chief Tech Robert Sykes, but you can call me Pliers.

COLONEL CHRISTOPHER BLAIR: Thanks, Pliers.

CHIEF TECH ROBERT "PLIERS" SYKES: Haven't seen one of those birds in quite a while, not up-close anyway.

COLONEL CHRISTOPHER BLAIR: Yeah, bet you worked on plenty of `em.

CHIEF TECH ROBERT "PLIERS" SYKES: Oh, yeah. Used to pull Kilrathi whiskers out of the intakes fer kids like you. Yeah, I could do a few things with that baby. Hey, don't let these grey hairs fool you, kid. I can still perform miracles with nothing more than a socket-driver and a pile of junk parts.

COLONEL CHRISTOPHER BLAIR: Looks to me that you kinda have to.

CHIEF TECH ROBERT "PLIERS" SYKES: Yeah. Plus, I can tweak those birds way beyond the specs those egghead engineers come up with.

launch deck - pliers -d2 chief tech ROBERT "PLIERS" SYKES looks up from his toolbox as Blair approaches. PLIERS is an old coot with a leathery face and a gravelly voice that sounds like something you'd hear in the pits at the Daytonaÿ500. his mood can swing radically from that of a friendly grandpa to that of a gruff, sour old fart.

right now, he's feeling grandfatherly -- but you wouldn't know it at first from his hard, curt tone.

pliers Well, if it ain't the new Confed boy, fightin' on our side.

Blair The name's Blair.

Pliers (sarcastic whisper) Well, hooo-ray. Guess that means we're gonna win this thing after all...

there's a tense moment between them. then pliers bursts out with a grin and a guffaw.

pliers Welcome aboard, kid. Chief Tech Robert Sykes. But you can call me Pliers. ÿ Blair Thanks, Pliers.

pliers looks over Blair's shoulder at the confed fighter Blair defected in. a gleam comes to the old guy's eyes.

pliers Haven't seen one of those birds in a while. Not up close anyway.

he takes a clump of something resembling tobacco out of a packet and shoves it in his mouth. Blair winces as the old guy chews.

Blair Bet you worked on plenty in the past, though.

pliers nods and spits a black glob onto the deck. Blair winces again.

pliers Used to pull Kilrathi whiskers out of the intakes fer kids like you.

he continues to eye Blair's ship.

pliers Yep. I could do a few things with that baby. (off Blair's look) Don't let these wrinkles fool you, I can still perform miracles with nuttin' more than a socket-driver and a pile of junked parts.

Blair Suppose you have to.

pliers I can tweak 'em way beyond the specs those egghead engineers come up with.
