Transcript

WILFORD: We are gathered here today to pay our last respects to our honored dead, those who have fallen to protect that which we hold dear. We mourn their loss and vow that they have not died in vain. They now return to the stars from which they came. May those stars serve to remind us of their sacrifice and of our duty. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Amen.

CASEY: We lost some good pilots out there today. Good people.

ZERO: Welcome to the wonderful world of armed aggression.

MANIAC: So then I come up on six, right, just like this. Boom! SPLAT on the windshield. Bug spray!

HAWK: Give it a rest, Maniac!

MANIAC: Well, I'd like to, Hot Shot but then, I rest too long one of you might accidentally catch up to me on the kill board. You'd like that, wouldn't you?

CASEY: How about some good old fashioned respect for the dead, Sir.

MANIAC: Look who talks it's my little Plebe friend. Hey, I sit on my butt for too long just cause some cherry can't hack it and gets killed, my... Hey! Come on!

-

BLAIR: Can I come in? I heard about your little struggle today. You know, I've known Maniac for a long time. He's very good at hiding his emotions behind a lot of hot air but his heart's basically in the right place. You can't let him get to you.

CASEY: Are you here to arrest me, Sir?

BLAIR: Me? No. I had a word with the CAG. I think she's prepared to chalk this one up to severe stress and anxiety. I wouldn't try it again though. Don't thank me all at once.

CASEY: I'm sorry, Sir. It's just that I thought all this would be different.

BLAIR: What?

CASEY: This. Everything!

BLAIR: You know, when I was on the flight line, flying with everyone else taking chances, risks, it all didn't seem to matter that much. Then it became clear. We fly with death every day. That's what we do. We fight. We struggle. We even lose friends. That became clear to me when I lost someone that I really cared for.

CASEY: When was that?

BLAIR: Oh, about 4,000 years ago. What you do is important out there, Casey. It is damn important. It's important to these men, to this ship, to our home. Don't let anyone stand in the way of what you need to do.

CASEY: You sound almost envious?

BLAIR: Maybe I am, Casey. Maybe I am.

We lost some good pilots today.
Good people.
ZERO
Welcome to the wonderful world of
armed aggression.

They drink. Spyder motions towards them with his head. Hawk
notices, but keeps sharpening his knife. He's heard it all
before. The door suddenly opens and Maniac comes in with a few
ROOKIES. He parks at the bar.

MANIAC
So then I came around on his six
and--- SANG--turned him into a
splat on my canopy. Whoohoo--bug
spray!

Hawk's knife sticks into the table with a loud thunk and he
stands abruptly, catching Maniac's attention.

HAWK
Give it a rest, Maniac.
MANIAC
(advancing a few steps)
Oh, I'd like to, Hot Shot, but i f I

MANIAC
Well, well...look who decided to

You bastard!

doorway. When he sees what Casey's doing, it's all he can do to
suppress a smile.

BLAIR
Can I come in?

Casey just keeps bouncing the ball. Blair crosses.

BLAIR
I heard about your little scuffle
today.

Still nothing from Casey.

BLAIR
Look, I've known Maniac for a long
time. He made a career out of
hiding his feelings behind a lot of
hot air, but his heart is basically
in the right place...You can't let
him get to you.

Casey doesn't look.

CASEY
Are you here to arrest me...Sir?
BLAIR
Me? No. I had a word with the
CAG. I think she's prepared to
chalk this one up to severe stress
and anxiety. But I wouldn't do it
again

Blair crabs the ball.

BLAIR
Don't thank me all at once...
CASEY
I'm sorry, Sir. it's just that I
thought this would all
be...different.

BLAIR
What?
CASEY
This... everything.

Blair nods, understanding.

BLAIR

though, it became clear. We fly

Casey looks at him. Sees something in

CASEY
When was that?
BLAIR
(a small smile)
Oh...about 4,000 years ago.

Blair stands. Back to business.

BLAIR
What you do out there is important,
Casey. Damn important. It's
important to these men, to this
to our home. Don't let
anything stand in the way of what
you need to do.

Blair holds out the ball. Casey takes it.

You sound almost...envious?

He turns to go.

Maybe I am, Casey. Maybe I am.

12/18/96 Draft

A Wing Commander Prophecy First Draft Script dated December 18, 1996 has been provided by Billy Cain.

INT. MIDWAY TORPEDO LAUNCH BAY (FUNERAL)(CG)

We see many coffins being preped for launch into space in an automated
conveyor system. As the coffins move down the line slowly we hear the voice
of the CAPTAIN conducting the mass funeral.

CAPTAIN - V.O.
(mid-sentence)
... ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Amen.
(beat) Our strength is tested as the
stars take from us the people we care
for. Sometimes, we do not even have a
body to mourn, only memories. Memories
and an empty shell to launch into
space. This is a day of pain and loss.
But we understand. It is our pact with
the stars; and we must honor it.

EXT. MIDWAY SPACE (CG)

The caskets are launched from the Midway and out into space. (Insert Jump,
nest scene plays auto)

INT. MIDWAY REC ROOM

Casey sits at a table, Zero, Hawk, Spyder, and Anderson at another. THEN
Maniac ENTERS; stops at Casey's table.

MANIAC
What are you looking so down in the
mouth about?
CASEY
(controlled)
I take it the Major didn't hear about
the mass funeral at 1900?
(CONTINUED)

CONTINUED:

MANIAC
No, I was informed. I even stood at a
window and waved goodbye to all the
poor fools with the wrong stuff.
CASEY
One of those poor fools was a friend of
mine.
MANIAC
Who couldn't cut it and got himself
killed. That's how it works out here,
kid. Get used to it.

INT. MIDWAY BRIEFING ROOM (REQUIRED- PLAYS AUTO)

A pensive Casey is sitting alone in a front row seat in the Briefing Room
when the staff door slides open and Blair ENTERS.

BLAIR
I heard about your tangle with Maniac....

CASEY

What's with that guy? He must have a
fusion pump where his heart used to be.

Blair takes a seat in the Captain's high-backed chair.

BLAIR
Look, Maniac's made a career out of
hiding his feelings behind a lot of hot
air. Unlike a certain rookie pilot I
know.

Casey gives Blair a long look.

CASEY
Colonel, you've been playing this game
quite a few years. How do you handle it
when...
BLAIR
When I lose a friend? Well, I could
give you some bullshit about how it's
part of the job; something you learn to
live with. But I'd be lying.
(CONTINUED)

CONTINUED:

BLAIR (Cont'd)
(beat) Every friend I've ever lost;
they're always with me. In my dreams,
my waking hours. The pain never really
goes away.
CASEY
(ironic)
Thanks. I feel a lot better.
BLAIR
So you lost a friend today. Do you want
to know what I lost? Two Wasps, three
Pirahna, one Tigershark, and a SAR. And
that's during just one mission in a war
that'll last God knows how long. (after
a beat) People dying is what this is
all about. Get used to it.
CASEY
Sounds like you haven't gotten used to
it.

Blair thinks about that. Finally nods; "you're right."

BLAIR
It was easier when I was still on the
flight line, taking my chances with
everybody else. But the Captain says
I've got to play staff officer. Says my
time as a pilot is behind me.
CASEY
I wouldn't mind having you on my wing.
BLAIR
(a small smile)
I'll take that as a compliment.

He rises to his feet; back to business.

BLAIR
The next briefing is at 0600 hours.

Casey acknowledges this with a nod. Then Blair EXITS, leaving Casey alone
with his thoughts.
