The Memoirs of Lieutenant Colonel Carl T. LaFong

When Roberts developed the Wing Commander holo-vid, he had to come up with a way for people to win or lose. At my insistence, he used the missions in Hubble's Star and Hell's Kitchen as the "losing" route. In the real war, the missions weren't flown by pilots on the Tiger's Claw. The following mission reports are from the actual war.

Pilots:

Major Pitak Puzaki
1st Lieutenant Marsha Shannon

Ship Type:

Scimitar's; assigned to the TCS Eagle's Talon

Mission:

Protect the colonists in Hubble's Star system. Twelve wings were dispatched Kappa Wing was assigned a sweep of three nav points.

Synopsis:

Single Ralari and fighter escort are encountered 8,000 kilometers from Nav 1. Shannon's engines overheat and she returns to the Eagle's Talon for repairs. Following Tactical Command Recommendation 2716-B, the mission continues as a solo effort.

An afterburner slide to the right, preceded by a 90-degree roll, evades first attack by escort wing. Two Krant weakened by mass driver guns and destroyed with Javelins. Two Krant downed with Gatling only. Rear attack on Ralari using Darts and guns is successful.

Approximately 7500 kilometers from Nav 2, five Dralthi, escorting 2 Dorkirs, attack. Evade using afterburners and multiple turns to slide from side to side. Use Dralthi's up or down loop against them and destroy all with mass drivers. Rear attacks on Dorkir are successful. Mines encountered 3510 kilometers from Nav 3.

Preflight Conversations

Talk to SHOTGLASS

Hey, Maverick. Sure is quiet around here.
Y'know, Hubble's Star sure isn't where I thought we'd make a last stand.
I mean, we've got active colonies here...research stations, too.
Coming here just invites those Kilrathi fleabags to strike our civilians.
The thought of that steams me up.
You guys can't let us down, $C. You've got to beat those hairballs back.
If you don't, well...

Mission Briefing

Mission Briefing. Hubble’s Star System, 06:00 hours, 2654.281.

Peter Halcyon
All right, boys and girls. Listen up.
Things haven't gone well for the Confederation. In fact, they're pretty sour.
We've got to stop the Kilrathi here. The colonists in this system are counting on us.
I'm sending out several wings to scout the area...
Hunter, you and Flashfire will fly the first run.
Maverick and Bossman will fly backup.
Ian St. John
'Scuse me, Colonel. I've 'eard Dakhath Deathstroke may be in this system.
Peter Halcyon
That's the initial report. We haven't confirmed it yet, though.
Remember, people...Dakhath is ruthless. He'll try to kill you in your ship, or out of it.
Computer, display Kappa.
Your patrol should be uneventful, Maverick. We're expecting some fuel tankers soon...
...so we need to be sure the nearby jump points are clear of hostiles.
Do a thorough sweep of the areaand return to the 'Claw with a report.
Questions, gentlemen?
Very well. Let's look sharp, people.
Squadron dismissed.

Mission Debriefing

Mission Debriefing. 15:00 hours, 2654.281.

Peter Halcyon
Glad to see you back aboard, Maverick.
Kien Chen
Maverick did a job out there.
Peter Halcyon
You both did well, as I expected you would. Good work.
Let's review the mission report.
You destroyed 6 of the enemy, Maverick...
as expected, Bossman tagged 5.
The log also shows you downed a two Kilrathi supply ships. Good work.
Nothing else. Dismissed.

Hangar Deck. 17:00 hours, 2654.281.

Peter Halcyon
For meritorious conduct in confronting the Kilrathi enemy, in the Hubble’s Star system,
on or about 2654.281, the Terran Confederation is proud to present the Silver Star to Major Blair.
Your courage is exemplary of the Confederation’s finest defenders.
Good job, Maverick. Congratulations.
Christopher Blair
Thank you, sir.

Filled with pride, Maverick meets the applause of his fellows.
