The VLC movie player can handle all video files (even RealMovie) without installing any additional codecs on your system. This is the best route in most cases, especially on modern computers.

These files require that a specific codec is installed on your computer. Please check this DivX FAQ if you have no picture and/or sound when playing these. DivX 3 may be needed for some files, even if you already have a more recent version installed! Different versions of DivX can co-exist.
