if you could design a wing commander game

That's not quite the same thing, LOAF ;) Saying that game players don't know what'll make a good game is... well, it's not exactly fair, for lack of a better word. Reminds me of what Herb Powell said in that episode of the Simpsons: "Instead of giving the American people what they want, you're telling them what they want!"

But, whatever, I'll shut up now. :)

Erm, but look at what *happened* in that episode after they tried to let the average American decide what he wanted in a car...

Probably not the best car, but it's sure is American!
(That's the car of my dreams. America, is the land of dreams and freedoms... isn't it?)

His mistake was picking the -average- American. :)

Nice car. What is it? :)

Best car *ever*.

Ah, touche, LOAF! Good point about "The Homer."

"All my life, I have searched for a car that feels a certain way. Powerful like a gorilla, yet soft and yielding like a Nerf ball. Now, at last, I have found it."

*best fictional advertising campaign ever!* :)

I'd very much like to see an expansion of the Privateer game to cover the main WC universe from the WC series.
Starting off in an old dilapidated trader and doing the trading up thing, getting better ships, hiring transports like in P2, doing missions, getting military reputations in different areas and fleets like in Elite.
Keep the graphics from WC4 / Prophecy, cut down on the FMV, use more static cutscenes to flesh out the thousands of worlds and add several long running and multi branched campaigns.
Maybe make some of the campaigns contradictory so you have to choose a different path to see the whole game.
I normally play with cockpits off to get a better view of the action - a RL pilot can move their head and peer about a cockpit much easier than you can change views on a game. Having said that I did like the cockpits in P1 - the Orion might have the best shields, but damm the window was small. Perhaps a system of translucancy / removability depending on the ship you were in? Makes having a fighter type ship worth having on dangerous runs even with a lower cargo capacity.

I also like the idea of having to get certain missions done, bribes placed, inside information, random salvage chance etc to get hold of military hardware. Maybe you start off in a sub-Drayman transport and move onto other self defence armed ships, or ships with limited performance and only later get to buy Scimitars and Rapiers on the black market or earn them...being 2 steps behind the tech of the military and having to interact with wingmen / fleets / pirates to survive - maybe being able to communicate with pirates and offering them a percentage of your take for safe passage etc...

I loved the original elite but was very disappointed with Frontier - so much promise let down by stuff like realistic physics engines.

Oh for the day when my 'Pegasus' deep space transport is jumped by a wing of Kilrathi heavy fighters and bombers expecting a quick kill, to be surprised when my converted carge bay spits out a couple of home converted ex military Rapiers with black market plasma cannons. Bliss.

And for the second game? The FPS campaing game, playable as a Confederation marine with appropriate weapons, missions and foes, and the Interlocking Game System from Omnitrends Rules Of Engagement / Breech series. When both games are installed and registered on your system then missions can link from one to the other - you fly cover for the transports as you knock out the mining outposts small defence fighters and turrets, land in the docking bay and then change to FPS mode, your success in the mission modifying the salvage or reward in the space tactical game.

Like it's ever gonna happen.
Less gloss. More gamplay. I still play Jetpac, Rebelstar and Jet Set Willey.
I would play WC1 and 2, but I can't get any slowdown software that actually makes them playable....

Anybody that says that game-making is all about creativity clearly has not read the WC1/2 Guide... game-making, like genius, is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. You have to have a concept - but then you have to assemble the *team*. Manage it. Direct it. Secure the funds to be able to pay them - that means proving to certain people that you've got what it takes, and it's not creativity they're looking for.

Um I have a coding team, and a 3d team, and the engine is almost complete, infact Wing Commander Universe will probably be hitting a computer near you, by the end of 2001!

The Bugs have defeated Earth and are systematically locating and wiping out human colonies. The Midway (or whatever) is charged with escorting refugees wherever they find them to a central location - in effect, a new home system.

Alternatively I could see the next WC game having Confed acting as a peace-keeper set some time after the Bug war. The game could involve a series of connected missions each revolving around a theme eg rescue a princess, resolve a war, stop pirates, squash a Kilrathi insurgence, hunt a mutinous Confed ship, etc etc (yes it does sound like Star Trek). However, one benefit I see to this is that the game wouldn't be so dependent on a particular actor/character (who could demand more money than he/she is worth). Another benefit is that this concept would lend itself to being picked up and easily continued by another developer.

As far as game mechanics go, while the "do everything" game concept seems attractive I would like them to stick with what made the series great. Derek Smart's Battlecruiser 3000 was supposed to be a "everthing included" game and that bombed miserably. I'd really like an interactivity/FMV level somewhere between WC3 (good) and WC4 (too good).

Just make the game like TIE Fighter!!!
Do you know the second campaign where you have to fight in a civil war between 2 fractions?
And the Empire is there as a peacekeeping force.
That was extreemly cool. Ah yes but give me cutscenes between every mission.

The flight engine is but a tiny fraction of what you're trying to do :).

Ah but what you didn't know was that the Trading Code has been started, and that the system code is progressing well, the systems will be coded in .xml format and I have sent Hellcatv an idea which will make creating systems so easy it will be hard to believe!

All right, let me rephrase what I said. The game engine is but a tiny fraction of what you're trying to do.

3d Graphics are mostly finished as well, a large part due to my freespace2 wctc without which we wouldn't have many models.
