The #Wingnut irc chat room was originally founded on July 13, 1997 as the irc channel of the alt.games.wing-commander newsgroup. It was used for the Grand Opening of the Wing Commander CIC on August 10, 1998. Our next big event will be the CIC Tenth Birthday Party on August 10, 2008 at 7:00 pm EDT (4:00 pm PDT and 11:00 pm GMT). Wing Commander fanatics are standing by 24 hours a day however, and newcomers are welcome to visit any time. The channel is located on irc.wcnews.com. Contact us if you have any questions about getting onto irc. The server can also be used for fan projects and RPG groups who wish to maintain a channel. You can reach us through the #Wingnut Web Interface, email or the Forums. It can be complicated at first, but irc is a very fun way to interact directly with fellow Wing Commander fans.
#WingNut is currently located on the CIC's own server. Once you have installed an irc program, type or copy/paste the following commands into the chat client:
/server irc.wcnews.com
/join #wingnut
If you have mIRC installed, you can also click this link to connect to our network and join #Wingnut. If it is your first time using IRC, you can use the simplified Java web interface. Users should switch to mIRC for a better experience once they understand how IRC works.
You need an irc client program in order to connect to our server and see us on #Wingnut.
Other than the standard no spamming/flaming, no specific rules are enforced. Topics are definitely not limited to Wing Commander. Just act friendly and you'll be fine. The general Crius.net Rules also make good guidelines for IRC.

After months of anticipation, the brand new CIC finally opened and revolutionizes the world of Wing Commander news. Who here remembers the original splash filler page and digital countdown timer?
- October 24, 1998 - CIC Secret Ops Contest Spectacular
WC Patches, Autographed Games, and Authentic WC Flight Suits/Bomber Jackets worn by the cast of Prophecy were up for grabs in our giant Secret Ops contest.
- August 10, 1999 - CIC First Birthday (Short Version)
The first of many anniversaries. CIC Green made its debut at our first birthday and LOAF baked a cake!
- August 10, 2000 - CIC Second Birthday (Short Version)
After the cancellation of Privateer Online, Wing Commander fanatics came out in force to show their support of the WC community. The first completed WC fan projects went online in 2000!
- August 10, 2001 - CIC Third Birthday (Short Version)
A record number of WC fans joined us to see CIC Teal go online, along with a new chat zone and The Book of LOAF. In 2001 we announced that wcnews.com was paid off until 2010!

Despite a few network hiccups, we had a great time celebrating another major milestone.
- August 10, 2003 - CIC Fifth Birthday (Short Version)
We celebrated our milestone fifth birthday, and all had a great time. We also unveiled the first part of our biggest project to date - the Encyclopedia!
- August 10, 2004 - CIC Sixth Birthday (Short Version)
Our sixth birthday went off without a hitch, lots of great prizes were given, and among other things LOAF's amazing document archive was revealed. We once again had a record number of fans drop by to celebrate.
- August 10, 2005 - CIC Seventh Birthday (Short Version)
The seventh birthday was tons of fun. The atmosphere was really great, and there were a variety of neat random drawings, trivia contests and scavenger hunts that netted Wing Commander fans some great prizes. Some CIC sections got a big refresh, Standoff Episode 2 was released and everyone enthusiastically celebrated being a Wing Commander fan.
- August 10, 2006 - CIC Eighth Birthday (Short Version)
The eighth birthday was a huge success. Scores of fans came and went throughout the night. The CIC featured a huge Privateer 2 extravaganza to celebrate that game's 10th anniversary year. CIC Yellow (Holovids) was created to share all the video that has been collected, and a variety of new clips were added for this debut. The new Tech Support section went online to help fans play classic WC titles, and HCl even released a test preview of his WCP Multiplayer Patch. Everyone had tons of fun, and we're all looking forward to the ninth birthday in 2007!
