'Scenes of McAuliffe' WIP Thread

Flak turrets..well IIRC it was mentioned somewhere in the books that for anti-torpedo they used small short ranged massdriver turrets that shoot small projectiles...allways got the image of a gattling massdriver in my mind when they mentioned that...maybe its an idea for later detailing.

About the big guns...well the Ranger or Concordia class didn't had that much...think it was about 6 top and 6 buttom or are you aiming for an armament like the movie "Tigersclaw"....none...except for torpedos.
I would make it something between like 4/4 or so...and then these big things we see at the TCS Concordia 3 barreled navalguns ^_^

turrets are going to be hemispherical mounts, about...8 i think it is. 4 top (2 front, 2 midships) 4 bottom (2 front, 2 rear-ish). The flak turret idea comes from WC1/2. Since those were the means of defense for the early game ships, that's what I thought would be neat. she does have torps too. the forward intake looking deals each hold 4 torpedo tubes.

Big turrets->
Mh I have to watch the movie again, but I don't think that the spheres would fit to the movielook you allready made. I would stay with the movielook you allready have and take a closer look into the movie to see what they where like.
Placeing seams to be good and quite like the games.

Small turrets->
I just wanted to mention the idea since the current look reminded me of these small massdrivers.
Gamewise I think WC1 had lasers and WC2 flak, WC3 had lasers again.
So it depends on what timeline the ship is build or if it has been upgraded.
If you are going for what its in the novels its different again I think.

PS: Did you got my mail?
If so what do you think about it..hope you could open/look at the pics.

well, you have to keep in mind that this ship was around 20 years before wc1. its logical to assume that it has fewer weapons. the big bulky wwii like turrets wouldn't fit this ship, to bulky. i can assure you the turrets'll look nice with the hull :)

the place holder flak batteries i designed after the gun you'd see on a destroyer. the final turret i have in my head will look much nicer and be more detailed.

i got your e-mail, but i can't view the pics. send them again to brad.mick.artist@gmail.com if you don't mind, thats my current and most checked e-mail address. look forward to seeing what you've got :)

Seams as if I am to much a WC3 guys likeing all these edgy/boxy things ^_^
So I will wait and see what you will come up with.

Oh a sidenote...when its 20 years befor WC1 then shouldn't it be a Ranger and not a Concordia class vessel or do I mix them up again, but when I remember it correctly the Concordia class has been build after the battleof earth and that was after WC1 when the claw was allready destroyed.
Could be wrong thought I am not quite good in history...not the wc one as the real ^_^

Concordia classes where that old thought they where introduced about the WC2 timeline.

Mh know I now what I miss in the ship database...builddates for the ships.

No, the Concordia class was around since the beginning of the war. You're thinking of the Confederation class. The Concordia that Tolwyn commands is a confederation class, it was named after the Concordia that was destroyed at the Battle of McAuliffe, which was a Concordia class.

Yup, nailed it Sarty.

It goes 2634 Concordia is a Concordia Class (more than likely the first to be named such i'd guess, have to check with LOAF on that) This is the Concordia involved in Action Stations. 20 years before WCI.

2654 (WC1 year, Movie Connie) is the Concordia Class Super Cruiser.

2664 (wc2) Concordia is a Confederation Class Dreadnaught.

the Lexington of WC4 is the Concordia Class.

My Concordia here that i'm modeling is the 'Re-Imagined' Wing Commander Movie styled (with a little bit added for visual flare, because visual flare is important, and gobs of details are cool as hell) Concordia Class of WC4. Besides, the ships of the early games had some rounded things going on (not to mention they were sprites, and the later WC games engines weren't powerful enough for high poly count models, which rounded models generally yield high counts..so they were boxy). 20 years is a big gap in time. Designs might have been this way long before WCI, or the Movie. The point is, we really don't know except for the Concordia Class, and the Ranger, oh, and I think the Bengal Class was there too. But the book doesn't mention them actually being at the Battle. Whether or not they'll be in there, I dunno. There are 3 confirmed Carrier Classes at the Battle of McAuliffe as laid out in Action Stations, 5 carriers confirmed by name.

Concordia Class (2 ships)

Concorida
Ark Royal

'Older Carrier Class'

Soryu
Achiles

'Heavy Carrier Class'

Coral Sea

There are also the Battleships:

Yorkshire
North Carolina
Antilles
Gibraltar
Belarus - (this ship dies by a 'brush up' against the station)
Malta

As far as the rest of the Confed Fleet, not really sure. Still digging through Action Stations. I know that Dayan has in her force:

Ark Royal
2 Battleships + other Escorts

The Kilrathi Force consists of either 5 or 6 Carriers. After consulting with LOAF we've decided they'd all be of the same class, kind of a solidarity thing. We know that the Kilrathi loose one Carrier in jump, the Kathuga.

I'm still researching the cat battleships, but i know of three fighter/bomber class ships:

Kala (modern fighter)
Gomora (modern bomber)
Asjaka (an older bomber used in the torpedo deomstration for the Emperor, Jukaga's father, and the Emperors son)

I know that Ratha (Prince's son I've gathered) kills himself after being 'bested' by the inexperienced Tolwyn. He removes his helmet.

The Kilrathi also attack with great speed by strapping boosters onto their fighters for the run in. Bringing their attack time down to like, an hour or so. I gotta look that up again, kind of fuzzy on it.

Tolwyn, Richards, and Turner all go out to the Landreich and end up at a place called 'The Pit' with a young guy by the name of Krueger, aboard the Lazarus (formerly Phantom, formerly the bouncing belch). I know that she's got a turret above the cockpit, and the rear gunner is visible from the cockpit as well. gotta get some other details down on it too.

Anyway, this is a lot of stuff. The ships listed I have to come up with designs for. There are a lot of them. And as such, that is why the Concordia Class has been 'Re-Imagined'. So I can have a set theme of design which will make designing a hell of a lot easier on myself, and also not leave my mind numb. If i have to model nothing but boxy, low poly shapes, i'd loose my mind. It's nothing against them, its just. This prjoect wouldn't get very far unless it were challenging. If that makes sense. Anyway, hope the little bit of history and data is interesting to those who haven't read the novel yet, if you're interested in more, shoot me a PM and i'll see what else I can tell you.

Just a quick update to state that after much long discussion and debate, it has been decided that the Scimitar will be included in this project. A little touch of home in this wholey unfamiliar realm :) expect modeling updates soon.

Looks nice...do the side get two different structurs, cause in the other screen the platin was different.
The back could use some more platings IMO the rest looks realy nice.

yup, the back wasnt touched yet in that render, all nice and done now :)

here's a concept the Kala fighter i did up today. enjoy!

Well that looks very good, very nice design..something of a Dralthi but it looks heavier.
Fits very well to the other WC1+2 fighters we have seen.

yup, in so far as the fighters go....i really wasn't a fan of the movie fighters much, cap ships...yup, fighters...no. should have some modeling updates tonight on the connie.

Brad Mick

The Kala looks quite small, it could be bigger.

And the 2nd attempt is much better, the first one looks like a squashed cockroach.

It could be a light fighter then the size would be fitting...remember the first Dralthis they where also more a cockpit with wings.

Size seems about right compared to the Sartha, Salthi, Shoklar, and Dralthi. Good design overall... thumbs up.
