IGN has published an interview with Victor Meinert and John Mueller, two artists working on Tabula Rasa. It's a nice, extensive (and open) look at the evolution of the game's design and artwork... and more importantly, Meinert is an Origin veteran who did artwork for Wing Commander Prophecy:
Victor Meinert: In terms of education and experience, I have an architecture degree and minored in fine art photography. I worked at EA / Origin for around seven years before starting up Destination Games in 2001 with Starr, Richard and the gang. I've worked on some mighty fun games like Wing Commander, Ultima IX: Ascension, and Crusader.
The entire article is available here. It also answers our biggest question about the game - what happened to the giant unicorns? "...we realized that the game wasn't fun, and that the content wasn't aspirational."
