Dragon*Con Gallery - Mailbag Style Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

In what has very quickly become our annual tradition, various members of the CIC staff met up with people from #WingNut at what is claimed to be "America's Largest SF and Popular Arts Convention", Dragon*Con. Our first year was filled with spreading the word via a booth and harrassing WC related people. What did we do this year? Find out in our special gallery where we mock the pictures and each other in a suitably insulting fashion. Here, have a quick sample:

Comments:

Byydo: The stray fibers on this scan make Tye look like he has rabies. Wait, what the hell is he eating? :~(
Weasel: It's a camera, Tye. There's no need to be afraid.
TyeDyeBoy: I look happy there, but that sandwich was a huge damn disappointment.
Monee: Uhh, so Weasel... what're you gonna have this time? Chicken strips?
Weasel: Hey, I happen to like chicken fingers. Leave me alone.
ChrisReid: I think Hades' straw has a lemon stuck in it.
LOAF: Champions: because it's there.
Joe: DEATH: "I'll be there in 15 minutes...save me a seat!"
Death: Die, Joe.
Hades: Joe mocks, but he never showed up for much of the day either.

WC Movie on Austrian TV Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

Karl Frank writes to report that the WC Movie is being aired tomorrow on Austrian television channel ORF-1. Here are the details:
Finally also we poor Austrians get to see the WC Movie. First it didn't appear in cinemas, then only in German TV. Now finally it found the way to the poor souls without Cable/Sattelite TV as well.
You can watch the Movie on Thursday, December 26th at 17:50

Last Call For Votes Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

We'll be announcing the winners of our Fan Site of the Year and Fan Project of the Year contests real soon now, so if you haven't yet voted now is the time! You can check out the nominated sites/projects and the voting procedure here.

Small Prophecy Trailer Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

A week or so ago we posted the original trailer for Prophecy, however it was a little on the large side weighing in at 18 megs. By the power of Divx compression, we now have a small, lower quality version which is just 3 megs. You can grab the file here.

Movie of the Day - WC Movie Preview Trailer Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

Long before the final movie trailer was made, there was a three minute long preview trailer which even contained one or two scenes cut from the movie. It's been offline for a little while, but now for your viewing pleasure we have it back online! This is a Divx version of the original trailer so it's much lower quality than the other almost DVD quality trailers, but it's only 10MB in size so it's not all bad. You can grab it here.

Ooingu Komandaa Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

If you've ever wondered how to write "open fire" in Japanese, today's special movie is just for you. We have a nice DVD rip of the Japanese trailer for the Wing Commander movie. It differs from the US trailer in a number of ways, including different music and Japanese subtitles. They also corrected the date to 2654. Encoded in Divx 5 format it weighs in at 11 megs. You can download the trailer here. Also, the title of this update seems to be a translation of how the Japanese write the title "Wing Commander." How odd.

Holding The Line Chapter 148 Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

Raptor has sent us the latest Holding The Line chapter, but has left me wondering what he means by "silly season." I can only imagine he is referring to Christmas, which for him happens in the middle of Summer. Now *that's* silly!
Hey all, Raptor here.

HTL continues with part six of the "Toeing The Line" series, which follows the Confed reserve pilots assembled in Nifelhiem to back up the main fleet. This chapter "Having A Ball", looks at the events leading up to, during, and after the ill-fated Valentine's Day ball with the Border Worlders from the point of view of the Confed pilots. As I'm sure you'll recall, there were a lot more bones broken than hearts at that party. This chapter is written by James Andrew "JAG" Greenhow, so please send any and all comments to him at Rambo.123uk@btinternet.com, not to me.

On another note, this'll be the last chapter posted here before the silly season, so I want to wish all you Wingnuts a merry Christmas and a happy new year. Look forward to a ton of HTL chapters in 2003. We might be getting close to the finale, but this story is still has a few twists and surprises in store for you.

Best,Raptor

You can find the story at: http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~theraj/archives/ch148.htm

Raylight Branching Out To GameCube Games Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

Raylight Studios, the makers of Prophecy Advance, are now official Nintendo GameCube developers.
After the good job made on the Game Boy Advance with Wings Advance, Wing Commander, Speedball II and R-type, after the award received at the last E3 from IGN for our Blue Roses Engine, Nintendo accepted our request for the Cube! I don't know if there will be a Cube version of Wing Commander Prophecy. Maybe if you make a great petition and send to Destination Software, maybe we'll be able to start the development next year. :)
This is exciting news for any GameCube owner as Raylight has demonstrated its quality programming in a number of products besides Prophecy. If they can do what they've done on the GBA, I can only imagine how awesome their Cube work will be. As far as we understand what rights Destination has to WC games, the Cube Prophecy idea is quite a long shot, but we will be following this story as it develops. If it looks like a petition will help, we will set up an official page for that. Otherwise, I'd say sales of Prophecy Advance will be everyone's first chance to tell Raylight/Destination whether they want more Wing Commander games or not.

Two Minute Movie Trailer Divx'd Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

A few people have asked for us to reupload the original two minute international WC Movie trailer recently. We've done better! We've gone ahead and redigitized it off an international DVD and divx'd it. The end result is that it's now twice the quality and resolution of the original, and clocks in at just 16 megs (instead of nearly 40). As a result, divx 5 is required. You can download it. You can find our enhanced version of the international WC Movie trailer here. Happy downloading!

LOAF In The Field Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

I've heard from LOAF and it sounds like he's having a great time down in Austin. Today's the day he'll be trying out Freelancer, but rumor has it that he's hunting down old Wing Commander stuff as well.

Time To Vote For Sites Of The Year Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

We've narrowed it down to seven choices for Fan Site and Fan Project of the year. Some sites received nominations in both categories, and unfortunately some very nice sites did not make it to this list. Everyone who maintains a Wing Commander site these days is doing the community a service, but for our purposes here we wanted to keep things manageable. And the nominees are..
Fan SitesFan Projects
BlackLance HQ
KillerWave's WC Page
Origin Museum
Task Force 16
Wing Commander Aces
Wing Commander in Russia
WingCenter.de
Battlegroup Serpent
HCl's WC Editing Site
Holding the Line
Kilrathi Empire ORPG
Unknown Enemy
Vega Strike
Wing Commander Standoff
Everyone is allowed to vote for one Site and one Project. And to those that were nominated, we've noticed that sites that put up a note/link about their nomination tend to net a few more votes. Rather that place restrictions on other sites' contents, we just wanted to make everyone equally aware of this. We'll be closing the polls in about one week. Vote now!

At Least You Don't Need To Upgrade Soon Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

Gaming-Age made a birthday tribute to Doom on its ninth birthday this month and credited it among just a few titles that forced people to upgrade their computers en masse. It's always cool to see Wing Commander get its proper honors.
While Wolfenstein 3-D was a monster hit and firmly established id as a player in the action gaming genre, it was Doom that annihilated everything that came before it and set the standard for years to come. Consumers would race to upgrade their PCs or purchase new ones just to be able to play it one of the few titles other than Wing Commander and 7th Guest to do so.
While on the subject, I have been upgrading my GBA in anticipation of Prophecy. If you took all the hardware I have and crammed it together, you'd get about a $400 GBA ($50-100 GBA, $40 Afterburner, $80 TV Converter, $70 TV Tuner, $50 e-reader and Cube link, $40 game/case, $40 Wormcam). It can't all be used together unfortunately, but it sure looks cool. I'm ready, are you?

Old GameSpot Poll Results Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

During the Fourth Birthday shuffle of August we reported on GameSpot's poll, but never presented the results. This is as close to a final count as we were able to get.
"Which of these classic game series would you most like to see revived?
The Ancient Art of War 202 (3%)
Descent 526 (9%)
Jagged Alliance 347 (6%)
King´s Quest 886 (15%)
Star Control 423 (7%)
Wing Commander 1391 (24%)
X-COM 1187 (21%)
Other 822 (14%)
Wing Commander took the largest chunk of the pie, and sci-fi games took more than half of the votes.

LOAF's Off To Austin Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

LOAF's taking a quick flight down to Austin right after the Two Towers premiere to check out Freelancer for the next few days. Hopefully he'll be back with lots of cool pictures later this week. And who knows what else he might find?

Need More Prophecy Footage? Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

We've got it right here! It's two minutes of original PC Prophecy footage, but beggars can't be choosers. Fortunately, it does happen to be extremely cool. Weighing in at about 18 megs, this was the original teaser for WCP that was released in August 1997 and lost to time after that. You can download the big Prophecy trailer here. If you need more Prophecy Advance stuff, Erwin has both the Star Giants and Prophecy screenshots in one place at GB Inside Gamer here.

Holding The Line: Chapter 147 Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

Here's Raptor with the introduction to a gory chapter 147:
Hey all, Raptor here

HTL continues with a gory chapter titled "War In Heaven." Those who prefer reading about ground combat and giblets getting splattered at close range to the space battles will love this one. This chapter was also originally planned as part of our Halloween special, but slipped a little in being posted here. The good news though, is that the chapters here at the CIC have just about caught up with the mailing list once again. This particular chapter is written by Kevin "Leeloo" Tan, so please send any and all comments to him at leeloo8@hotmail.com, not to me.

Best, Raptor

You can check it out here, if you can stomach it.

Get Thee to a Windows Media Player Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

Erwin reports that Destination Software has posted the trailer for Wing Commander Prophecy GBA! You can download it here. It's very impressive! Shockwaves, missile trails, 3D ships... I had no idea GameBoys could look this good! The video (wmv format) clocks in at just under a minute, and shows off cut scenes, dialogue, gameplay and the multiplayer mode. Wow!

Infobursts Back Online Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

During one of the server shake-ups a while back our old radio show, the CIC Infoburst, went offline. We've gathered up the original copies again and reloaded them to our server. They're in .rm format, which is a bit dated and bloated now, but back in 1998 and 1999, it was what we had. There are some cool shows in there that you might like if you've never heard them before. Even if you have, they're great for nostalgia. Episode 1 is an interview with LOAF and me, Episode 2 is focused on an interview with famous Wing Commander music composer George Oldziey, Episode 3 is a talk with noted WC author Chris McCubbin and Episode 4 is a post-movie interview with Chris Roberts himself.

Site of the Year Nominations Continue Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

We've gotten a healthy number of nominations for Wing Commander Fan Site and Fan Project of the Year so far, so we'll probably go ahead with the actual contest in a few days. If you have any last minute sites to nominate, do so now! Don't forget to submit your Freelancer questions to LOAF ASAP. He's heading down to check out the game in less than a week.

Wing Commander 3D Mod Project Established Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

Tolwyn (one of them at least) wants mod authors and talented Wing Commander fans to contribute to an open collection of 3D tools and material available for everyone to use. This is what he had to say.
What is Wing Commander 3D? Wing Commander 3D is a collection pool of mod work. I don't know how willing people are to openly share for the purpose of sharing. I think it's a fairly noble approach, maybe it would go over well. People who made the models for their specific project might have not originally planned on making them available to all. It can be hard to let go of something you worked on, but it's worth a try anyways.
If you've got something you'd like to donate, you can check out more information here. The CIC also has its own limited WC3D section here as well.

Freelancer Fanstock Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

Confused about Freelancer? It's gone through a heck of a lot of revisions since it was originally hinted at back in 1998, and it's been hard to follow at times. Well, Microsoft is so sure that the game will appeal to Wing Commander fans that they're kindly sending me to check it out. I'm heading to Austin next week along with some Freelancer fansite webmasters to give the space epic a test drive... and I'll report back to let everyone know what it's like! If you've got a Freelancer question you'd like answered by the guys at Digital Anvil just drop me an e-mail or post to this thread at the CZ.

Nominate Your Fan Site of the Year for 2002 Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

As 2002 draws to a close, it's time for everyone to select which Wing Commander websites contribute most to the community and will continue to be active in the future. The first part of this process involves the nomination. We hold two concurrent pollings, so please nominate your choice for both Fan Site of the Year 2002 and Fan Project of the Year 2002 now. After we have secured the nominations, we will begin actual voting. You can send in your submissions here. Past winners and runners up: 1999, 2000 Site, 2000 Project, & 2001.

Pre-Prophecy Fun Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

Everybody is getting ready for the release of Prophecy, it seems. First off, Nintendo has updated their Prophecy page for the second time this week. Unfortunately the change made was changing the release date from "Dec, 2002" to "Jan, 2003". Perhaps we'll have to take the game off of our Christmas present lists. In other news, Amazon now lists the game. While they seem a little confused on some details (they don't list a release date, they say the game is by "Destineer," and they don't allow you to pre-order) you can at least add the game to your wish lists. And in other other news, GameSpot is reporting that up to four GameCubes and televisions can be linked together with the upcoming GBA/GC Player to play games like Prophecy Advance.
As previously noted, the GameCube Game Boy player will support link-cable games. If players have multiple GameCubes and copies of the game, then each player can play on a separate TV screen.

Entertainment Weekly Article Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

CIC ChatZoner Wulf spotted an article about WC in the current issue of Entertainment Weekly. It also features an interview with Chris Roberts. Here's a quick quote:
The sci-fi Wing Commander series, inspired by Star Wars (Hey, they wrote it, not me), and starring actors like Mark Hamill and Malcolm McDowell, imposed cinematic narrative on games. 'My games were mostly about stories and characters,' says Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts.'The inspiration for Wing Commander was "What if instead of being about trying to get a high score, it's about trying to finish a story?" '

Holding The Line Chapter 146 Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

Be afraid.. be very afraid. No, not of Raptor, the story.
Hey all, Raptor here.

HTL continues with a spooky little tale called "Harvest", featuring a Border Worlds pilots you might recognise, one Troy "Catscratch" Carter. This story was originally intended to be part of our Halloween special, and was sent out on the Aces list in time for the holiday. We might be a little late posting it here, but it should be no less blood curdling for all that. This story is written by Brandon "Avatarr" Alspaugh, so please send any and all comments to him at avatarr@sprynet.com, not to me.

Best, Raptor

The story is at: http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~theraj/archives/ch146.htm

WCPolaroids: Casey (16/24) Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

According to the writing, this is a photo of Casey after he has taken off his belt and boots. Perhaps in preparation for a cut X-rated scene?

Prophecy Advance This Month? Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

Nintendo's Prophecy page has been updated with a couple of bits of information.. the most interesting one being a listed released date of "Dec, 2002". Great news if it's true, however Nintendo aren't publishing the game so their release date may not be totally reliable.. it's the closest thing to an official date yet. The other piece of information is that the game comes on a 32MBit cartridge which seems quite small since most games seem to use a cartridge twice the size.

Never No More Update ID Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

Home Theater Forum held an online chat about upcoming titles with FOX DVD rep Peter Staddon. Someone who clearly has excellent taste asked about Wing Commander:
<HakanPowers> Good morning (!) Peter, thanks for joining us today! What are the chances of an anamorphic Wing Commander ever seeing the light of day? also, did the situation with the problematic DTS track on Moulin Rouge ever get solved?

<peterstaddon> Wing Commander has had it's time on DVD, there will never be another version.
