Bearcats - yes, the ones in BW service are what was captured in WC4. Whether the factory in BW space still exists or was shut down is an unknown. In response to BattleDog - you are assuming that the Tigershark entered service in 2681. If anything, its designation indicates that it entered service shortly after the Bearcat did... although, IIRC, there are no official sources confirming the Bearcat as the F-104, or the Dragon as the F-107. Indeed, I think a fairly convincing case could be made for the Bearcat to have a designation lower than F-103. It is quite conceivable that the production of the Bearcat would have been delayed in the rush to get the more critical Excalibur out the door.

Ijuin, while the Epee has a high probability of appearing (and the Scim will appear - it just won't make it to the end of the game), I rather doubt the Banshee will. Neither the Avenger nor the Longbows will appear (and if Longbows did appear, they definitely wouldn't be carrying Vipers).

As for designations, I believe they are quite a good indicator of chronology, but within limits - in real life, designations are assigned at prototype stage. Getting a fighter from prototype to service can take a while though, and it's possible that a later prototype, with a higher designation, will get into service first for some reason.

In that case, is there going to be a bomber heavier than the Vindicator or not? If not, then the Vindicator should probably have 4 heavy torps or 2 heavy/4 light torps.

So, we have Rapier, Vindicator, Scimitar YA, probable Epee, and possible Ferret. Any others? It feels to me like we need something in between the Epee and the Rapier...

Oh, sure, there will be a ship heavier than the Vindicator. And there will be ships lighter than the Rapier IV, too. We're just not ready to reveal what they are, yet.

Personnally I doubt the Dragon has a designation, simply because it was a black progect.

As to the Bearcat being the F-90+ something. I Look at the stats and I'm inclined to dissagre.

It the Beacat came into service in 2669 it would probably have 235cm shields and 100cm armor. I don't know We could argue this till armagedon.

The F-117 was a "black project" throughout the 80's at the Skunkworks and I think it was called the F-19 during this phase.

No, I'm thinking more along the lines of F-101 or 102. And yeah, the Bearcat has better stats than the Excal - but it doesn't have a jump drive, so the Excal would have become more important... in this hypothetical situation, if the Bearcat is the F-102, and it goes into production instead of the F-103 Excalibur, we end up flying the Kilrah run in a Morningstar :p.

Piranhas are the top of the line that are phasing out the light fighters.
Maybe it's just due to the specialisation, but I really don't feel that the Piranhas are replacements for light fighters. As Hawk stated in the ICIS manual, no matter what size of previous generation fighter you flew, you were expected to - and often could - destroy whatever enemy ship you encountered. But I really don't feel like taking on loads of heavy fighters in a Piranha, which is clearly optimised for speed, not combat capability. Hence patrol craft - as with the stripped down recon Excalibur, the pilot is encouraged to run and report, not fight.

All light craft since the Hornet have come with the "run from overwhelming odds" disclaimer. If I was actually flying an Arrow for real, there is no way I'd take on anything heavier than a wing of dralthi without some help, maybe a lone Vaktoth (no silver or gold stars for me :))
The Pirahna has a pretty weak energy weapon arsenal, like the Arrow, but comes up lacking to its wartime predesessor in terms of missile complement. I think the addition of the stormfire makes up for this shortcoming, especially in the dogfighting category. But your right, phased out is the wrong terminology. We are talking about a complete change in operational doctorine here :).

I found the Piranah to be a much better craft if by sticking a tachyon gun in, at the same port of the laser gun, so while you've got consistent shots coming through from the laser, every once in a while a nice chunky bit of damage is dealt by the tachyon. Puts severe drainage one the guns, though.

I am very glad that I only had to fly it twice in Propechy...although it is the most entertaining fighter to take down a Kilrathi Corvette.

Well,if you put a Tachyon gun there it automaticly stops to be a light fighter and becomes a medium or something.....Maybe a Light Tachyon.....I dont know.

The main Differences between Light/Medium/Heavy Fighters are the guns .......

You can add to the Arrow 2 Tachyon 2 reaper cannons as well, then it will become a fast heavy fighter.

Maybe another difference is that the heavy fighters usually have better shields/armor ,but we can see in Wc3,Wc4 medium fighters has the same shields with heavy or sometimes Light!

I don't want to see the same debate arise twice, but I don't think you can classify ships just on their guns. Just as a quick example the Darket and Sorthak are definitely different classifications in terms of light/medium/heavy/bomber, yet the only guns both ships had was the meson gun.

Classification is itty gritty. I'll leave it at that. My point was that while you can change the weapons on ships, some of them work better than others...like that single tachyon gun was better than putting 2 lasers and 2 ions where the ions already are, on the Piranah. Usually it's got to do with the placement of the guns - like how the Excalibur's reapers would hit more often than the tachyons because the tachyons were too far apart and could easily go past either side of the enemy ship.

Sorthak should have a class of its own.Its like a mini Corvette. With no regular guns but only turrets, and lots of them.

Also guns are guns...if you put 4 lasers at the Excalibur (there is a recon Excalibur version with 4 lasers :D ) or you put the same guns (with the same configuration ofcourse) at the Arrow, they would have the same power.....I dont get your point there....

anyway I think you are right we must not start an endless debate here ;)

To me the Sorthak seems to be like the Devestator without the torpedoes or plasma cannon--it has turrets on every side blasting away, and is sluggish compared to most fighters, yet much faster and more nimble than a capship.

And getting back to the main topic of the thread, I would love to see the Pahktan bomber if we get to see any Kilrathi ships--the Pahktan is way cool.

Regarding guns, the way that the WCP/SO engine treats guns kind of sucks--the way it is currently set up, having 2 Tachyon/2 Laser actually gives you more power than having 4 Tachyon guns.

Ijuin ,I agree with you.....the Prophecy Engine is weird with guns....The refire rate etc...

Quarto: I know but Iam just trying to forget that silly class name they gave to it "SUPER HEAVY"

wow super duper ultra heavy junk

You better stop talking like that, or I'll send some supercarriers and megacarriers after you :).

Possible solution to the Tachyon issue:

mod a gun to be similar, or use a gun with similar properties (the Turreted Tachyon comes to mind immediately here) to sub for half of the set of four... or just give everything that carrys tachs four of them and cut down the refire so its accurate.
