Ugliest Ship

I've heard some say the Vindicator is a pretty ugly ship. But I love the way that ship looks. I like the way all the Border World ships look (except maybe the Avenger) over all the Confed ships.

I think at least some of that feeling you're getting is due to the way the ship was handled cinematography-wise. You hardly ever see the whole thing in a frame... Even to this day I can't find anyone who is able to tell me what the back of it looks like.

Yeah, both of the human capital ships had this problem -- the Concordia looks awesome, but you only get a few brief shots of it in the movie.

I'd rest easier knowing that someone saved the plastic models they used to have at the old Digital Anvil offices...

But you liked WC1's Bengal right? That was a classy ship...

Absolutely -- I think the Tiger's Claw was the closest Wing Commander ever came to having an Enterprise-style 'signature' ship. The Concordia, Victory, Intrepid and Midway all seemed slightly disappointing in comparison.

I think the real Bengal class carriers from WC1 were my favorite.

Isn't this the same thread I just warned you for trolling in?

I had issues with the Kilrathi capital ships in the Wing Commander Movie. The Rapiers didn't bother me quite as much even though they're not really lookers themselves.

The movie Bengal was dissapointing to me as well. I think they were going for the rounded submarine look and that's why it looks like it does but really... *yawn*.

Agreed, with the exception of the Thrakhra-class -- I thought it looked more Kilrathi than most 'game' Kilrathi capital ships.

I'm fairly ambivalent towards the Ralari. It looks much more impressive in the game, but the movie design sort of suits the 'strategic bomber' description of its use in the Confed Handbook. I'm a sucker for that potential use -- I've always felt that Wing Commander really needs a 'strategic bomber' analogue.

The turrets and such on the Broadsword and its kin eare clearly based on the B-17... but a more direct version would be cool. A big multi-engine bomber, too large to take off from a carrier... so you have these huge formations of planet-based space-bombers that cross the line to bomb enemy colonies, and you have to fly escort missions for them.

The Fralthi, Sivar and Snakeir were all very generic. They might have been cool if we'd seen them in a big broadside-style battle where the cannons on their hulls were used, but mostly they just sat around, looked similar to eachother and took damage.

That was a problem I had with some of the movie's action scenes. I remember a few instances where the Kilrathi capships just sat in space waiting for torpedoes to smite them instead of letting all hell break loose with their turrets.

I have to say that I thought, with the exception of the movie, that all the ships in the WC series had their charms. I think it is unfair to say whether or not they were ugly, they served their purpose and looked in keeping with the fashion of the time and what the computer people could make them look like. I thought all the ships through 1 and 2 looked fantastic. They were functional yet they had the look of hard design, why bother trying to make them look too cool in space with no air they could just be flying boxes and work well but the designers knew we needed something we could relate to.

Scimitars were beautiful and flew well. I think that the way UE resurected them and gave them a credibility made them almost my favourite.

It is unfair to say that WC3 ships were not nice. They looked cool on the ships stat cards but then in the game, well, I guess they did not have the know how to make them look really good. They are erring more towards the utilitarian rather than just trying to look good and they kind of represented darker nature that was WC3.

At the end of the day it is like your girlfriend. To you she is the most beautiful woman in the world because you know her inside and out. A ship is the same, if you enjoyed flying it then it will look better than if you didn't. And besides who knows what will be cool in 600 years.

The Thrakra was the CommCon right?

As for the movie Kilrathi ships, I didn't like that there was so much green in them(green engines, lights, green lasers, green mist in the ships) that was a clearly overused sci-fi clicheè(green=alien)

Yeah, the color scheme was a huge problem on the Kilrathi capital ships. The 'tan' Kilrathi durasteel color in the games created a really unique look... grey capital ships full of green goo just didn't feel alien, compared to a big tan Fralthra-pod.

My vote for the ugliest ship goes to the WCM Rapier as well.

Surprisingly, I didn't mind the Kilrathi cap ships designs of the movie - I liked them, can't say why.
Even more surprisng because I find all of the WC3 Confed designs (fighters and cap ships) with the exception of the Cruiser to be downright boring. Not ugly but just boring. I wouldn't mind as much of there were some not boring ships (The Epee isn't very exciting as well to me but the other ships ion WC2 look very cool). Same goes with the WC4 Confed fighters though I really like the BW ships.

I never really understood the look of the Longbow (or the Devestator) -- I'd assume you'd want bigger 'wings' under which to mount more torpedoes.

The Wraith was weirdly out of place, like Jazz and Doomsday in SM2... its graphics were a little better looking than the rest of the game they were added to.

Yeah -- I always wondered why Confed never matched the Kilrathi in torpedo loadouts. Gothri and Paktakhn both carried six torpedoes each...

(The exception being Blair's special Sabre, which also carried six torpedoes...)
