Evil Fan Wciv Reviews!!!!!

I read that review a while ago. They also did a poor review for WCIII. Well, that person is just a blasted idiot.

*L* could these 'reviewers' have been wanting these games to be more like others and less like themselves?

They do have a point -- from the point of view of the casual game player, Wing Commander IV was pretty bad. The lots and lots of video and very little gameplay really only appealed to those of us who want to live in the Wing Commander universe and who were, lets face it, a little bit tired of actually having to work to get through the games...

That's strange, I never found that WC4 had less gameplay than the other games. I mean it had a lot of videos, of course, but that didn't mean that the number of missions in the game were particularily few or less thought behind it. I saw the movies more as an addition to the regular gameplay instead of a substitute.

I often found myself in WCIV trying to scoot through missions just to get ot the next video sequence. In that respect, the cutscenes were a bit overbearing. One of th ereasons I like WCIII so much (as the best overall game in the mainstream universe, IMO), is its superb BLEND of gameplay and cutscenes. WCIV overdid the cutscene aspect a little.

On the other hand, WCIV certainly had the BEST cutscenes and arguably the finest story.

See I loved the cutscenes and getting the story and the rest but I also loved the chalenge of the missions, especially the new type of missions, having to go and capture shit, launching MIPs and the rest, it was all really fun and I thought the balance between Gameplay and FMV was perfect, after watching the cutscenes I wanted to go and succeed at my missions, it made me care for the people on the ship and on my wing so I had a reason to fight with them, and the missions were great because I was playing within the character of blair

I don't see where these are Evil Fan WC4 reviews, as they are - quite obviously - not fans. :D
WC4 is the only game in the series where the first time I played it I just wanted to continue playing to know the next thing that happens. So far the only two games that have done that for me are: WC4 and Blade Runner. The other WCs had great stories, but none as involving as WC4.
As for the missions, there are a multitude of great ones, but I do feel there's an at least equal amount of, well, not so great ones.

Personally, I liked all the movies. It made the story more compelling. I liked the gameplay too. And, it was much better than tie fighter.

Actually, I thought the missions in WingIV were better than in WingIII. In Win3 the missions were essentially the same stuff over again (that is not to say that they were not fun.) And the missions of Wing3 did not fit quite as well into the story. Sometimes it seemed rather arbitrary why we were doing this patrol or this escort et cetara. In WingIV, in my opinion at least, the missions all felt carefully intertwined with the story. Wing2 also captured this balance--especially in the Special Operations disks. The problem is not so much that the gameplay part was not as good, its more about not having as many improvements as people expected. If you really think about it, the improvements of WC2 over WC was mostly cinematic too. It is just that back then Wing was so revolutionary and games were not evolving as fast as they are today so people did not care as much. And besides, did people actually think you could write a new engine in a year.

Hey, Zor, I notice you live in Arlington Texas. I also live in the Metroplex.

But that's what's great about the WCIV missions: you have a purpose . You don't go though mission after mission blowing up $@^$!%!#@ and come back to the next story part. What you do affects what happens and that's what is appealling about WC in general. As for newbies, WCIV was my first game and I loved it to death. Enough that I went around buying every single WC thing I could find.

I have to agree with the people who believe WC4 was on the cutscene-heavy end of the scale. And all WC missions have a purpose. Else you'd be playing something like Academy. ;)

I personally don't believe that the gameplay suffers much in relation to the movies. Yes, there are TONS of movies in that Wing4, but is it just me, or are those missions damned hard?!

To me, that's the balance. There aren't 70 million missions (Aren't there only 35 in WC2?), but they are very hard and challenging (for me), and that is what gameplay is mostly about.
