What joystick do you have? If it's a relatively new one, it's probably a digital stick, which will not usually work with Dos mode games. There's nothing you can do about it. If you wanna play Privateer badly, get yourself an old analog stick, you can pick one up for next to nothing.

Light fighters I'll be the first to say that light fighters deserve a lot more credit than they get...but I can't stand the ferret. NO shields, almost no armor, light weapons, no missiles, Hell, it doesn't even have a damage display! On the other hand, (this is gonna get me crucified)...

D3D Some cards run Prophecy just fine in D3D. I upgraded from a Banshee based card to a Diamond Viper II, and it looks better with the new card than the Banshee, apart from the lack of fog in D3D. If you're looking for a cheap upgrade, the Viper II is a good choice...almost Geforce...

Privateer sound problems It isn't just the SB Live that has problems. I have an Aureal Vortex 2 and get the same crappy static in the game. The music works fine, though. The game also seems very unstable, it freezes or dumps me back to the dos prompt every few missions or so.

Privateer You have to run it in pure dos, as far as I know. If you get a complicated looking error when you try to start it in dos, make sure you have the lines FILES=50 BUFFERS=50 in your config.sys file. Turns out that's what I was missing that kept me from playing the game for...
