HELP! The perfect theoretical Wing Commander ride? READ!

Gluegun

Spaceman
Hey Wing Commander Connoisseur's!

I'm doing a writing project for my High School Physics class in which I am writing a letter describing the perfect theme park ride. Of course, I wanna do a Wing Commander ride. I am aware that they are doing a WC roller coaster in Europe based on the movie, but all of us know that the movie sucks, so I wanna do a ride based on the games… I'm thinking of doing a capsule-based motion simulator ride that is on a track to increase the G forces involved. The capsules would be self-contained, that is, everyone would be watching what's going on in the window/screens, not seeing the track or anything at all. We could set it sometime between Wing Commander II and III, and (of course), have Mark Hamill (how do you spell his last name?!) do the acting and be the "guide", of course. It would be a Star Tours kinda thing, only it wouldn't suck and it would move like that SpiderMan ride, only a LOT faster. What do you all think? I want some help doing this. Ideas, comments, criticism, whatever

Oh, here is the actual text of the assignment. You're supposed to write it in letter format. The person is name is made up (and his name strangely resembles that playboy dude…my Physics teacher has a weird sense of humor…) All typos are mine.

CEO Amazing Stuff Inc
· Explain public need for your invention
· Tell how it will thrill and chill your audience
· Describe how the product operates
· Give detailed illustrations
· Give sample calculations to reinforce your physics description
· Explain possible dangers of ride
· State safety features that will be utilized
· How many G's does your ride go?

Cool assignment, huh? So, any ideas on how to go about this?

Yo mean:

you want us wingnuts to write it for you ?

Some tips:

- A trip that's 15 minutes long full of adrenaline
- Use the craft that have the nicest shot's (CIC Ship Database)
- Tell what craft you are in, what craft you are going to fight
- Weapons that are used
- Sounds

etc...

If you're going to do something like that, do it based off a mission. Like base it off a strike mission. You know, you're capsule is a bomber. Or, you could do the bombing run on Kilrah. Or you could just do a bug dfensive dogfight! Lots of g's there!

Have fun!

Phew!! Nice project Gluegun, but it seems pretty long to me ... :(

Ah well, good practice I guess...

As the others have said, try basing it on a mission, full scope...
For example take-off, Strike mission, dogfight with escorts, torpedo run, torpedo hit, mission accomplished, landing...

The "Star Tours" analogy would be very good, you'll be in Blair's cockpit...
Take the Star Tours trick, include diagrams (which you probably can find on the net) and describe some physics in that...

Obviously, you won't reach anything above 2 G's, so better ask your teacher if the idea's fine... :)

I sugest that you do the attack on ayers rock, where spirt dies, have adrenaline and emotion in the same mission, it would be wild. Now I like your capsle idea, i say do a space mountain rollercoaster and have the entire forward part of each pod as a screen. You could have the movement of the coaster coincide with the action on the screen

Hmmm....

I was thinking of pretty much copying the Star Tours concept...

but working on the execution of it, and I think that would be awesome...

Blair piloting the ship by remote (a la Back to the Future), or maybe Maniac..yea....Maniac. have it be a VIP tour of an experimental confed craft modified to carry a bunch of people...

first, you gotta be slingshotted out of the carrier deck...

oh, and the ship is supposedly unarmed...*grins*...but when things heat up, it has some guns

and things go awry, and the Kilrathi jump in, and you get caught up in the middle of a huge firefight, but you have the best pilot in the galaxy keeping you safe. which takes you into an asteroid field and a gas giant's atmosphere...and you have to fly into the middle of a Kilrathi ship and stuff...and Maniac gets into an argument with Blair, leaving you hanging, and then, there's some equipment failures, and then Thrakhath jumps in, says some dramatic stuff, and you have to dodge around a HUGE kilrathi ship, and he jumps out, and you jump out to catch him, and you get in this big fight REALLY REALLY close to a star, and you make him eject, and then you come back to the carrier and stuff, and make an emergency landing...

Really, I thought it was Ayers rock which she rammed with her saber, I guess I was wrong :( THAT ISN'T SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN, EVER!!!

*Two* Tanaka's have died in suicidal attacks in the Wing Commander universe! Find the second one and *WIN BIG*.

Argh, that's MEAN Bandit!!

This is just the type of question that only YOU could be able to answer... ;):p

We don't really know *how* Spirit's dad died -- I'm thinking of Captain Tanaka from False Colors, the pirate who saves the day by ramming the Bonadventure into the Klarran.

The Bombing Run on Kilrah is a very good idea. You can pull a lot of G's, shoot some ekapsi and other stuff, launch the bomb, burn outa there, and let the shockwave blow you into space...

Well, you got me there :). I thought that maybe Tanaka Shun's death was mentioned in Action Stations (even started paging through it, but eventually gave up)... I didn't remember at all about Captain Tanaka.

WC Ride

Gluegun...GREAT idea so far, I'd love to see it actually happy...but, PLEASE!!!!!, take this from a veteran "ride warrior"...NO EQUIPMENT FAILURES!!!! EVERY SINGLE motion simulator ride has to have some sort of engine failure. Back to the Future, your engine dies. Questor, you run out of power and plummet until you get the crytsal. Star Tours, your stabilizer dies in the death star battle. EVEN THE damn pathetic Astroliner sim from 1960 or so (it goes up once when you take off, and down when you crash land after...you guessed it, your engine dies). It's turning into a pretty sad cliche. Can't you come up with something a little more original? PLEASE? >.<

oh yeah...

Just thought you should know, for those that don't already, there is actually a Wing Commander motion simulator ride in development now. You can check out the company that's creating it at http://www.showscan.com , but there isn't much info on the ride itself yet. It's the same company that's done a lot of popular motion simulators, though, so it looks like something worth keeping an eye on.
