Military vs. Civilian ships

I was just wondering if anyone else noticed anything odd about this...

When you eject in WC1/2, you are told that "the ship you jsut ejected from cost millions of credits, blah blah blah..."
Millions of credits for a military ship, ok...

Why is it that a civilian mercenary(in Privateer) can spend 500,000 or so on an Orion or Centurion and a few upgrades, and it can effortlessly blow the crap out of a Broadsword or Gothri? Is it just me, or does Confed have to take a close look at the quality of it's supplies? I say load the Conconridia up with Orions and REALLY give the cats a run for their money.

The ships in Privateer are a generation behind technologically... while an Orion or a Centurian can go head to head with a Broadsword in 2669, they're nothing compared to a Hellcat or similar front-line craft.

You can't compare civilian ships with military ships. Civilians would lose a combat, since then can't get their hands on weapons (unless the have a man inside).

Well, obviously they *can* buy weapons... but only military surpless that would have very little effect on an Arrow or a Thunderbolt. :)

Huh? I don't follow... I blew up tons of military ships in Privateer wit the most basic weapons.

No, you blew up Broadswords and Stiletto's -- surpluss ships from an era previous. The Broadsword's <> 20 cm of armor in the Gemini Sector is nothing compred to the front line craft of the time -- with hundreds of centimeters of shielding and armor.

There is a Kilrathi-Terran border in the Gemini sector and both sides only use worn out junk ships? Why doesn't one side then put just a dozen modern fighters in the area and sweep through the sector? And the Perry naval base, which seemed quite big to me is only protected by oldtimers ?
Or is this one of the occasions where we have to think of some modern craft also existing in Gemini and we only see through coincidence the old ones?

It does seem weird doesn't it?

However, Gemini may be not be considered part of the main action. For example, the Kilrathi may concentrate on the main routes to Earth and not worry about Gemini.

Didn't the Paradigm look quite out of place as a destroyer. Its style would be more suitable for a ship further into the future...

Just some thoughts, after all, the 'Front line' destroyers in WC3 escorting the Victory didn't look crash hot...

The military and civi ships may be a generation or two behind, but still effective. Taking them out with low level surplus weapons isnt all that far fetched. Considering the military ships had meson blasters and mass drivers (except the Paradigim), weapons that seem to be good enough even for the Kilrathi. I wouldnt consider these weapons and ships "low end surplus" Leaving out the mega Steltek gun all together, the weapons in Privateer rank as excellent hardware along with the 3 ships available to fly. They would of course be outdated by current dates, but who says you cant take a Centurion and upgrade it to more current technology in engines and shields, then load it up with dust cannons and pls particle cannons? Never throw away a good thing!

Of course... why do you think pirates and Kilrathi turn up there all the time, waiting for you to blow them up? :)

Burns the thing is that in 2669 the ships and guns that were used were out of date, the seltek gun on level 2 only did 19 cm of damnage, that is less than a laser in WC3, as such we can safely say that all the ships in Privateer are quite outdated if the most powerful gun has such a low power output in comparison.

Well, that just screws everything up now. Why would Mr Burrows be so concerned about losing his Steltek gun if he could just steal, 'borrow' or charm a 'regular' laser gun from a Confed mechanic. :)

Why don't you go over to an Air Force Base and see if you can "charm" somebody out of a heat-seeking missile? I'll wait here.

Then, try and set up your station wagon to fire the missile. :)

steltek gun

well, that 19 is a bit off...

there was a little conversion, i think it was 10x or 8x or something like that.

19cm of (i forget the name of the metal they use) is equivalent to 190 cm of steel.

hence the rediculous armour values on the wc3 fighter data sheets... they gave the steel equivalents, not the real values. and the older wc games dealt with the real values, not the steel equivalents. that's why the armour values are so different in wc1/2/p and 3+. for example (this is from memory) i think the thunderbolt has 250 cm (steel equivalent) armour... now imagine if it were REAL 250 cm armour... the ships armour would be more than a story thick. but 25 cm of (whatever it's called metal) armour is MUCH more plausible.

so all in all, if the steltek gun took off 19 cm of actual armour, that's 190 cm of steel it'd take off (about as deep as a _very_ tall person stands...). so 2 hits would take off a thinderbolts armour and score a sizeable hit on the insides.

Well, if you remember, for years there was a bloody stalemate at one battle (I don't remember the name), because although more manpower on either side (well catpower in the Kilrathi's case :)) could have won the battle in one stroke, neither side wanted to commit. So it's quite possible that both sides use old tech in Gemini, which is a bit of a backwater sector.
Anyway, Privateer was released before Wing III - the first game, I believe, to feature armor in the hundreds of cms on fighters, which brings up an interesting point...in Armada the Arrow only has 12 cm of armor, yet in Wing III it has 80 cms...hmm...an improved model, maybe? Or just a mistake somebody made on armor thickness?

Sounds like your talking about the Battle Of Repleetah but that was a fight between Confed Marines and their Kilrathi equivalent (Cat marines?). A thourogh air strike would have ended it for either side but no one was willing to.

The values are listed as centimetres of plasteel in Armada. One centemetre of plasteed = 10 cm of durasteel according to the Privateer manual.

Broadswords and Paradigms.

I think we should all be wondering why Confed would keep Bombers and Destroyers in civillian space. I mean the Border worlds millitia fighters in Privateer were mostly civillian craft (and one confed craft, the Gladius.) You'd think Confed would've had some Sabres.

My answer as to why it's so easy to destroy millitary fighters in a civillian craft?

Your're you. Just as Blair was able to take out huge squadrons and cap-ships by himself... Brownhair was able to take down Confederate craft. Watch the Confeds fight some kilrathi, or some Retros. It's a whole different story there. Confeds -usually- win. They get toasted pretty often too, but it's all a numbers game.
