Wing Commander Games and Windows XP - A Summary

I have not a chance to read all the replies here but can anyone tell me what could be done about WC prophecy??
I installed it and everything the game play runs smoothly but the cinematics scene inbetween keeps skipping, I think that my computer is running too fast or something

Disable the sound acceleration in DXDIAG or download the movie skipping patch as suggested a million times already on the boards. Please people, use the search function!

I have a P3 800 MHz, 256 Mb RAM, GeForce2 264 Mb, SoundBlaster 5.1
I’ve tried to run WC3 in Windows XP Professional with the following suggestion:

“Make a linkup with wc3.exe to desktop and rightclick on it, go to properties and make the settings : Memory- all settings to automatic Screen- window Program- excute in Windows2000 compatibilty”

It worked fine although without sound. I searched the net and found out about VDMSound (a SB16 emulator). During the installation process (using VDMSound), all audio tests worked perfectly but when I tried to run the game an error message appeared. The message said something like, GFSSAMPLE.IFF file couldn’t be found, in a directory (which I can’t remember now) that doesn’t exists in the CD nor in the installation directory at the hard-drive. The message also said that it could be a CD problem, but that isn’t possible as I’ve tried the game with DOSBOX 0.63 and it plays with sound (with terrible sound).

Is it possible to run WC3 with DOS-BOX 0.63 or in Win XP with VDMSound at 100% (movies and gameplay)? If so, how?

Thanks.

Have you tried increasing the CPU cycles in DOSBox? Hit Control+F12 5-10 times and see if the sound gets any clearer. Additionally, if you turned down sound card hardware acceleration in an attempt to fix your Prophecy video stuttering, turn it back on for WC3.

You won't be able to run WC3 via Dosbox with a PIII 800Mhz at acceptable speed - no chance. - Even a 3GHz CPU ist still too slow for perfect speed (in close combat even with dynamic core, which is unstable, btw)

To your VDMS prob: I know that there is a way arround this error-message, but I somehow forgot how to do it. :( - But you can check/search the VDMS Forums. I think the solution I once knew was mentioned there. (I got sound probs + Joystick-probs with VDMS, if I remember correct. That is why I gave it up :( )
Or maybe someone else remembers the solution... (I think it had something to do with XMS or EMS memroy settings  )

Thank you for the both replies.
I guess it’s worthless to try DOS-BOX but VDMSound seems to be the way. I’ll try to find the solution as mentioned by THE_WUQKED. I’ll post the results here if I'm successful.

Again, thanks.

Well, I've been trying to run WC3 KS in XP and I had no luck changing the process priority or using compatibility modes whatsoever. The game just freezed after the Origin movie.

However, I just installed NStriker's w2k fix, set WC3W.exe to be run under w2k compatibility mode... and the game seems to be running perfectly. No freezes, perfect sound and videos.

Just hope this helps.

Where can I find that fix?

WC 1 and SM too fast - WC Saga NOT the DOS Version

Please help

I installed the Kilrathi Saga on a 3GHz P4 and it simply runs too fast.
I used to play the DOS-Version on a 486, slowed down to 12 MHz and it worked fine. The Saga is about 25 to 35% too fast for playability.

Since the Saga was designed for Win95 (and I run Secret Missions in compatibility mode), it is processor speed independent. Simple slow-down programs like mo'slo or turbo do not work, and I'm reluctant to pay 25 credits for Mo'Slo 4biz (probably resulting in choppy music).

Has anyone solved this problem? Is there a parameter that can be changed to slow down the game (with a hex editor, if need be)? Are there decelerator programs that actually work and are cheap/free?

Thanks!

My situation

I've got some difficulties with the KS version of WC3. It seems to run alright with priority set to normal, up until the Tamayo section starts.

I complete the previous mission (meet up with transport, escort to jump point, beware of "skipper" missles). I land, get the landing/rachel video, and the "now jumping to... the tamayo system" video. After this, it freezes up at a black screen and stops responding, all the while eating up most of my processor capacity.

I'd like to know if anybody else encounters this same problem, as I'm wondering whether this is a WinXP problem or a CD problem.

My KS#2 cd is scratched, making gameflow.tre and cd1movie.tre corrupted in certain areas. The gameflow file is also on KS#1, so it's okay. The movie file I recovered using DVD Data Rescue, and the result is that any portion of video that's missing just gets skipped over (instead of stuttering or locking up like it did before). It's possible that my problem is due to the movie file just being too damaged, though I don't know for sure.

Also, there's an intermittent period where using the keyboard results in sluggish manuvering. It's like a button press is translated into wavering the stick randomly from half tilted to full, instead of just having it at full. Mouse control dosen't have this problem but is harder to use.

Here's my system specs:

P4 2.53GHZ
Win XP SP1
1.5GB RAM
120GB Hard disk
128MB GF4 Ti 4600

Yeah, some people do sense a "sluggish" feel to the Kilrathi Saga keyboard controls that was not present in the originals. It does sound like a corrupted file might be part of the problem for the lockup at Tamayo.

Movie problem

Hi y'all

I recently installed wc4 and with the patch and in compatibility mode the cockpit mode is working just fine. just like it used to. But the movies are way too slow and stop every second. It's really annoying. Since I've read here it should be working just fine I wonder what my problem is.

Did you try to change the settings for sound acceleration in DXDiag? (either full or none, whatever it isn't at the moment).

thanx man. changing the settings actually worked. i wonder if i should've known that...

I just got a copy of WC3 in the mail today. Something made me want to get back to my WC days badly. I installed it in XP just fine and all seems to work quite well. With one exception, I get the choppy and crackling sound that others seem to be experiencing here as well. Has there been any development in alleviating this issue?

Armada, Driving Me Crazy!!!

o.k. I got Privateer to work fine in DOSbox, now I want to get Armada to work I've tryed the same config. as Privateer It SHOULD WORK right? well it dosn't... HELP.

Nothing's really changed. Some people get rid of it by adjusting their soundcard hardware acceleration.

Did you execute the game with loadfix first? People need to provide more details about how their games don't work. If you don't give us that basic information, all we can do is ask you what the problem is.
