WC4 question

I always thought it would have been cool to add a torpedo rack or two onto the excal, kind of like the sabre and t-bolt to an extent...it had plenty of missile space even with the t-bomb...could have been a really great self escorting fighter/bomber

The Excalibur was quoted in the WC3 guide to carry a "planet busting torpedo" (which is of course, the Temblor Bomb).

true so it seems maybe it would be relatively easy to make it into a bigger threat to capships...

Considering how the Excalibur came from the Special Operations budget, I really don't see this as much of a problem. Afterall, Special Ops and other Black Ops projects are more "unconventional" then accepted norms.

And back on WCSO.

But the Excalibur that carry the T-Bomb was a special model. Other than that, it was a space superiority fighter.

And back on WCSO.

SO took place several days after WCP - the only difference in ship design (from the point of view of the Wing Commander universe, not the gamer) was the addition of the black ops 'S' variants.

I don't think the mods to make it carry the t-bomb were that drastic...

From all accounts, mounting the T-Bomb on the Excalibur made it sluggish and underpowered.

Whats the wc4 strat guides blurb on the bearcat?

I always thought that the Bearcat was an interceptor/space superiourity fighter. Its fast, agile, with a good gun load out (Tachyon lights, not full though) strong sheilds and a big capacitator. The ship has no real flaws other than weapon placing which is weird cause the Excals 4 Tachyons are placed on the outter extremeteis of the ship yet its weapon placement kills. The bearcat doesn't look that much wider... go figure.

While the Excal is a major jump forward in technology its not without flaws.

Weak armour, it does get pounded way too easily.
Small Capacitor, Same size as the T-bolt but the guns are mucho hungrier, add auto track and you can fire only a few volleys. (not that you need more than a few with the Excal anyhow)

One of the best things about the excal I thought was the ability to down darkets with a single salvo if you made sure ever bolt hit home...it made WC3 so much easier...

The WCIV Guide only had specifications, IIRC. In fact, almost nothing is known about the history of the Bearcat - just what was seen in a little bit of WCIV.

I think the pryus guide for wc4 has some kind of history but I don't think the source of it is origin (although I could be wrong and it might not be in there, I'll have to go find mine and double check)

The only official guide to WCIV is called "Origin's Official Guide to Wing Commander IV" -it has the red & yellow Black Lance symbol box art on the cover. There are two (English) unofficial guides.

Which would explain why they waited to load the T-Bomb until the last possible pitstop.

Sorry to interrupt. Somoen sid somthing about a 7. CD for WC4 ? I did not got it in my original (first release) box. What was on it? I played through wc 4 every year twice, but never knew that i could leach the Lexington. It looks like ill ahve to play again

Precisely. According to the novel, the idea was that the fighters would escort themselves to the last asteroid depot, with full fighter load-outs in order to combat if necessary. Once at the depot, two Excals would load T-bombs, and each would have a dedicated escort fighter. However, with Vagabond shot down en route, Blair decides to load only his craft with the T-Bomb, and have two escorts (Flint and Maniac), leaving th eother T-Bomb for a later attempt should their's fail.

A signifigant difference between the novel and game is that in the novel, Blair could mount NO missiles with the T-Bomb. In the game, you still have six missiles (losing two of four racks).
