WC4 Mod For Homeworld 2 In The Works (June 5, 2006)

I would say that the mod is moving along nicely, I'm liking all the additions and tweaks.


Have just played the single player mission and for me it was broken where the kilrathi dont launch missles and their ships are stationary.


I dare say that you guys have considered them, but a couple of thoughts for you with how to bring in a few extra craft from the different time periods of the WC series.

The time line point of the mod is the start of the WCP era, this allows (with a little playing around) :
Confed have WC3/4 craft
Kilrathi have WC3/4 craft
The BL have their WC4 craft
UBW have their WC4 craft, along with the older WC1/WC2 craft.

With the WCP time point then other WC games can be incorperated :
Kilrathi Outer Worlds - in false colours (I think) there was a kilrathi equilialent for the UBW (with older craft), so this faction would allow the addition of WC1/WC2 craft.
Confeds Secret ops who would have their WCP craft, like the BL be very limited relying on special abilities. Or perhaps these could be merged with the BL.
The Nephilim could also be brought in.


I realise that its a boat load of work, but perhaps there is an idea or two there for you.

I really wish that I could help you guys build stuff or help with importing into the game, but the limit of my computer skills is AutoCAD and that was a few years ago.

Heh, right now, our main goal is to get all four current factions to a similar quality standard. The Border Worlds and Black Lance still require a lot of work, both in terms of ships and of coding, to get to the level of either the TCN or the Cats.

Got the update and now the game won't run keep getting a general failure
Argh. I juste tested the Steam version of the mod and it works perfectly here.

So, please do the following:

- go to \SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Homeworld\HomeworldRM\DATAWORKSHOPMODS\*A HUGE NUMBER HERE*\403171608\ and tell me the size of the file called WC4FC_Remastered.big
- get to the mod selection menu
- select Flag Commander
- type in the "Commandline Arguments" window the following, including the dash -luatrace
- start the game
- experience the crash
- go to \Steamlibrary\steamapps\common\Homeworld\HomeworldRM\Bin\Release\
- open with notepad the file named HWRM.log
- post the contents of that file here so I can see what goes wrong on your end

Other solution, suggested by the people at Phoenix Interactive:


This error is typically generated by steam. (or GBX Tools ...) When create .big, the tool corrupts this file during downloading ... we can't resolve it, actually the only solution is to redownload this. But before this, don't forget the delete of mod in HWRM folder is NOT sufficient.

Step 1 : Stop subscribing to mod ;
Step 2 : Stop steam process, close steam, same.
Step 3 : Go into your Steam Folder, (Same of HW, not the steam main folder if steam is not installed at the exact location of HWRM). : ...\Steam[Library]\SteamApps\workshop\content\XXXX\403171608[XXXX is number, but random, and contains the next folder, number of this mods is general and not random]
Step 4 : Delete 403171608folders (contain save of mods if you delete in the HWRM folder, steam automatically takes these files.)
Step 5 : Go to /Homeworld/HomeworldRM/DATAWORKSHOPMODS/76XXXXXXXX/403171608
Delete this 403171608folder. [76XXXXXXXX is your number of steam user or HWRM profile. Contains all mods of HWRM that you subscribe in Workshop for RM].
Step 6 : Subscribe to this mod. And re-download all of file.

Step 7 : If you are lucky, the error with : last token read: ' ' at line 1 in string ""
Don't appeared at the same location, or don't appear at all.

one thing you might consider tweaking is the ability of the mothership to jump around the map when it's under attack. I spent easily twenty minutes chasing the thing around with a cruiser squadron firing a few shots at it, then it would jump out, and then jump back a few KM away so I had to go after it again.

OK, just as a sneak peek of what is to come, at the very least for multiplayer: I'm going to modify some maps to add randomly placed jump buoys, which will be capturable by the players. Once captured, they will spawn convoys of two transport ships that will head straight to your mothership and drop off a resource bonus proportional to the distance between the buoy and your mothership, then go back to the jump buoy and give you a similar bonus as they leave, before allowing a new convoy to jump in.

I'm not going to lie, I do not think I will be able to get the AI to play along with this smoothly before a long time or unless I receive some outside help (I made some contacts in the modding community, so maybe they'll give me a hand once they're not as busy), but it would be, IMHO, a good addition to multiplayer games as it would give a whole new battle for corvettes and frigates to play, harassing and escorting convoys after scouting for the various jump buoys. My long-term plan is, if I can get the AI to work with it, would be to remove entirely the resource collectors to play only through military convoys. But when I say long-term, expect something like end of 2016 or 2017 unless I get some big breakthrough.

I am curious about the AI and scripting needed. I am a average-professional programmer with some modding experience, though not experienced in Lua (which the HW AI seems to be scripted with). It looks like I have to extract the BIG file before I can take a look, but I'm curious if there are any relevant resources or example code you could point me towards. I don't want to pledge help, but I'm curious to take a look at the code and see if I'm able to contribute at all.

I doubt you will be able to extract the .BIG file as I put a small security feature making the usual extractors crash if they attempt to open it, due to a team that shall remain unnamed which tends to "borrow" other people's work without asking. If you want, however, I can send you the code by PM as well as the file architecture and the method required for you to tinker with the code and test it with the mod itself (in short, you'd put the files in the right way and tell the game to override the mod and use the files instead).

I think I speak for the whole team when I say we'd welcome any help when it comes to AI coding. :)
