Just a note about the board...

Er... I'm not sure that the violence we see from volume 34 onwards would be very suitable for kids of that age, akashra...

But Japan has a totally different notion of violence than us Westeners do, that's for sure...

Hey mpanty, you said you read all the manga up to the final battle with Cell.
Does that mean the Otherworld Tournament, Great Saiyaman and Majin Buu sagas are also not by Toriyama? I thought they were, at least I've seen Toriyama talk about them.

Whoops, I why did I say that? My bad my bad my bad...

I meant the final battle with Buu of course ("Boo" in the French version)...

In the Mangas, after Cell is destroyed, there's a period of peace, and Great Saiyaman is born (Gohan's secret identity)...
Then comes the 4th Martial Arts tournament, where the mysterious "M" tattoed experts appear... on to the Babidi spaceship showdown and the creation of Boo...
Later on, Boo separates into Good Boo and Evil Boo, and Evil Boo absorbs Good Boo to become even more powerful. He subsequently absorbs all of Goku's friends, until Goku and Vegeta fuse to free their friends...
Small Evil Boo is created...

One final epic battle with Gohan, helped by Goku from the afterlife, defeats Boo once and for all...
The series ends on another Martial Arts tournament, when Goku discovers the reincarnation of Boo in a small kid participating in the contest. He retires to train him and put him back on the right side...
The End. :)

The afterlife tournament, apparently is a DBZ exclusivity...

As is the Garlic Jr. saga, so that's entirely possible.
Unlike the Garlic Jr. saga, this one was good though. Especially the competetiveness between the four Kais was fun :)

Many things are exclusive to DBZ...

Comes to mind:

-Goku and Piccolo learning how to drive
-Garlic
-Cooler

...and a couple more that I will tell you about once I get back home... :)

Pokemon is for those ages, DragonBall is not. The sheer amount of graphic violence proves that.

Err... DBZ is just as much for kids as Pokemon is <G> And it's just as edited for US audiences as Pokemon is...

(Still, that's not a criticism... I *love* Pokemon!)

Regardless of whether DragonBall is for kids, I love it!
I'm also subscribed to the Donald Duck, many people think that is for kids too.
And imho there's a difference between 'for kids', and 'just for kids'.

Agreed -- it's not *just* for kids, but it's certainly aimed at them... and it bugs me when people get high and mighty about how wonderful and intelligent their show is in such cases:)

Well, DragonBall is anything but intelligent really. It's just good fun, entertainment that doesn't require any thinking.
The only 'intelligent' thing about it is how good the continuity worked out. Okay, it has mistakes of course, but generally it's pretty good. I've heard Toriyama say even he was surprised at that!

Hmm, true. There were two guys I went to high school with, both 18, that were more into Pokemon than the kids in the Under 12s basketball team I coach were.

I could only think of one word to really describe it - "Sad".

I don't really know, I haven't seen it that much.
What I do know is that the Dutch dub (and that's the only version there is on Dutch tv) is pathetic.
I didn't really think it was very very sad indeed, I just wanted to make that joke, because otherwise I would forget it again.

My problem with the show is it's formula. It seems every damned episode is the same with only a variation on Pokemon.

Pokemon is not real anime, BTW. Since Pokemon is made to cash in for Nintendo's prestegious "Game Boy" line (Ever notice the similarities between a Game Boy and a Pokedex?) it's just commercialism. People in Japan even say this.

But practically *ever* anime series is based on something... be it a video game or a comic book <G> That doesn't really change the style of art that it is...

Don't most tv-shows have formulas? DragonBall Z is basically enemy arrives-get beaten-train-beat enemy. Only instead of 1 episode the process takes about 30-60 episodes.
The fun is in the humour the series has, the character developments and the enemies themselves, which are sometimes just fantastic.

Well, Pokemon is mass commericalism, as opposed to Mononoke Hime, Evangelion or Trigun but even they sell a good deal of toys, CDs, etc. Pokemon, however, is JUST about commercialism.

Eva is JUST about writing a goddamned brilliant anime series. :D

Like I said, I can't really comment on Pokemon. DragonBall wasn't really commercial. In fact the original DragonBall anime didn't do very well, so it was ended prematurely. It wasn't untill the manga became very popular they decided to pick it back up with the DragonBall Z anime.

mpanty: what's your favourite DragonBall character? I like Gohan a lot, and Videl (she's cute! ;) ), and Mr. Satan is also great, very funny character. "It's a trick!" :D

Eh eh... I love that twisted humour that appears in lots and lots of Japan anime...
e.g. someone admits he's done something really stupid, and the other characters "fall down" from frustration, usually pictured with character number 1 red with embarassment, and the legs of the other characters shown upside down in the panel... :D

Japan anime has also an enormous obsession on sex I've noticed... and Toriyama doesn't hesitate to joke about it... :)

Yeah, I know. Too bad a lot of those jokes are cut from the US version of the anime.
Still waiting for the manga to be in the mail... *sigh*
