ideal midway taskforce

The task force of the Victory in WC3 consisted of what exactly: 1 Lt carrier, 2 destroyers and 1 cruiser as I remember. Or had it only 1 destroyer? Anyway it seemed quite big for such an old carrier.

Wasn't it just one destroyer?

I just remember, the Victory, the Sheffield, the Ajax and one other ship...

I'm sure there was a frigate in there somewhere. Now thats a wartime configuration of a battle group. Not this 6 destroyer 6 cruiser stuff. Perhaps a huge battle fleet capable of taking down C&C stations, but then again you'd have more than one carrier in that situation.

Victory's escorts are with her all the time -- two destroyers (Sheffield and Coventry) and a cruiser (Ajax)... a frigate also shows up at some point (it's possible her frigate is usually further away from her, so we don't see it all the time...).

Thats it, the Coventry. I could've sworn though that the escorts were all different classes. I don't know, I haven't played WC3 in a good two years or so :(

wasn't that paladins frigate?
i remeber seeing it as i cameback from one of the last missions

Well you can fly right up to it and idea it in WC3 and in the novel it mentioned Tolwyn sending back the cruiser Coventry to delay the Kilrathi after the retreat when the Behemoth was destroyed.

Re: Task force,

Am I the only one here who wants Confed to develop a
dedicated ship-killer a la the Kraken or the Narwhal?

Way I'd do it is: Have 2 small battlegroups, one containing
1 CV, 2 CA, 4 DD, and a second with 1 BFG (the
ship-killer) , 1 CVL, 1 CA, 4DD.

The Carrier uses it's craft to find and fix the bad guys.
If they are scattered, the fighter strike is sufficient to rip 'em up. If not, the fighters can force the bad guys to bunch up for protection at a single, well-defined location.

And once they are bunched up at a known location -- the BFG
cuts loose! KA-BOOM! Scratch one enemy fleet.

Fighter loadout: Vampires and Devastators, with WASPs for
intercept work. Also, WORKING CLOAKING DEVICES ASAP!!! If
the WASP can be modified for long-range work, I'd be tempted
to take them in place of the Vampires.

What do you think?

Respectfully,

Brian P.

PS: Glossary of terms:

CV - Carrier
CVL - Carrier, light.
CA - Heavy Cruiser, a dedicated capital-ship destroyer.
DD - Destroyer, dedicated to anti-fighter escort of capital
ships.

-- BDP.

I would think a smaller more manuverable Behemoth would work in that capacity. Im sure by now the technology would be more refined and making it about the size of a carrier would make it more effective a capital ship. Heck, if you gather somthing like four of them together you can still blow up a planet (not that thats a good thing :))

Those BFG ships did not prevent the bugs from being destroyed. Of course if the smart humans would have such a ship it would surely rock. BUT: In another thread we found out that the good guys (the humans) cannot use such overkill weapons without suffering serious drawbacks. ;)

Well in the vain of not being over kill, how bout this for you. After the ships fire they are completely shut down and immobile, with no turret defense for say two to five minutes. NO reason they should do that but just to make it a drawback...

Ermm .. how so? Do you mean the fact that the Plasma
cannon the Midway captured had a 67% chance of
destroying the Midway if fired?

I wasn't suggesting we build *that*. I was suggesting
that we STUDY the weapon and build our own version,
using Confed technology and Confed technology ONLY,
so that the resulting weapon wouldn't need a catalyst
to set it off and so that the chance of blowing up
the firing ship was <10%. Much like the Artemis ELRIR.
