David Hassan is a military intelligence officer who contacts Lev to set up a meeting. Hassan tells Lev about the Kindred and its leader Kronos. He also mentions that the Kindred seem very interested in Lev and that finding Kronos may help reveal Lev's past. The first step to finding Kronos is to find Hugo Carmichael who may be able to lead Lev to Malakai, one of the Kindred's top men.
