With WC3 and WC4 both receiving fantastic updates, ODVS couldn't leave Prophecy out! It's received the same definitive updates as WC4 and looks just as gorgeous. Players will have to first upgrade their copy of Prophecy to the DVD edition with this patch. Then the clips can be dropped right in! The only issue is figuring out which game to replay first!

To celebrate Wing Commander CIC's birthday and the thirtieth anniversary of the Wing Commander franchise, I'm proud to release Wing Commander Prophecy HD Video Pack V4.0!

As well as containing the highest quality remaster I've yet managed to produce, V4.0 contains the following improvements that make it the Definitive Edition:

  • All FMV footage remastered to 1080p Full HD using Machine Learning AI
  • Frame rate standardised in filmed sequences
  • Various scenes missing from the DVD pack have been restored and remastered from the original CD-ROM source
  • Heavy DVD interlacing removed from all footage
  • DVD MPEG compression artifacts removed to improve clarity
  • German pack also available (Stereo audio only)

So my teenage son just watched Top Gun for the first time, and it got me wanting to jump back into the cockpit (and maybe let him do so too). To that end, I thought I'd get Prophecy running with the high res videos advertised above.

Except getting them working is escaping me. Sorry for what is probably a stupid question, but what am I doing wrong? I have the GOG version of Prophecy. I first dropped in the DVD upgrade patch (it was just a file wcphr.dll that replaced an existing file of the same name) into the main GOG/Wing Commander Prophecy directory, and then, as the instructions above indicate, just dropped the mp4 files right in the same top level Prophecy directory. But when I run the game, I still get the same non-interlaced but low-res videos I got before... not the beautiful high res vidooes that I see if I directly play the mp4's.

What am I doing wrong? Is the upgrade not compatible with the GOG version? I skipped the multiplayer and OpenGL upgrades as I thought I didn't need them, but do I? Do the videos get dropped somewhere else? Did I miss some other step?

Some have had problems with the wcphr getting the movies to work. Try the wcpunl b6.4, but don't get the opengl from here as it is only a patch for existing installations and won't work by itself. You'll need to replace the prophecy.exe with the one in the package as well as copy the wcpunl.dll in.

Also the mp4s should be in a "movie" folder within the wcp folder.

Thanks! That mostly worked! Nice work!

Only... the videos now play as interlaced (i.e. every other line of pixels is black). Changing the Deinterlacer=1 keyword in wcpunl.ini has no effect.

I confirmed that the videos downloaded and placed in the movie folder are not interlaced; when played external to the game they are full resolution. Thoughts on how to fix, or do I just deal with the interlacing.

Thanks for your help!

In game, hit Escape, go to Options Menu and de-select Interlaced Video check box (bottom left on the first page). That will remove the interlacing.

The deinterlacer option in the ini is only for the original DVD 'VOB' files that were released first. The VOBs are in 60i interlaced format so has an obvious combing effect when played in game (automatically de-interlaced by VLC or other Media Players). This just implements a simple de-combing/de-interlacer.

ODVS's HD pack already de-interlaces the videos to a 30p progressive so the option has no effect.

I assume you have wide-screen monitor, as most people do these days. The original Software, Direct3d and Glide renderers are hard-coded to 640x480 resolution which is 4:3 aspect ratio, so the video will just slot within that resolution, meaning it won't stretch to your monitor's full width.

The solution for that is to use the OpenGL 1.3 patch which allows for higher resolutions and wide-screen. First you need to download and install the Model Update Pack, from the Resources section, which will install the full OpenGL 1.2. Then download the OpenGL 1.3 patch from my previous link above and replace the gl_00007.dll in the WCP folder with the updated one. Run the WCP launcher, go to the Select Video Card screen and choose the OpenGL 1.3 from the list. The 1.3 implements full screen support for the movies.
