WCP Shields and Armor

Well,on the top and bottom you'll see three horizontal stripes. These are your SHIELDS.They REGENERATE if they are hit, given the time.Between top and bottom shield indicators is ARMOR indicator, divided in four sections (front, rear and two sides). If the shields are breached ( you can't see shield stripes ), your armor is going to absorb damage. It does NOT REGENERATE over time and can absorb only limited amount of damage.Once the shields and armor are gone, your systems are going to start taking damage, reducing the overall effectivness of your fighter.Auto repair system will repair them unless they are completly destroyed.Only your core doesn't get repaired and the core is most important.Namely, if your core takes 100% damage, you're dead.Have fun exploring the great universe of Wing Commander!:)

Ow, I found it possible to survive quite some more hits after my armour had been breached in WCP (to the same location).

In Wc1/2 though, breached armour was really bad but not as bad as in Armada. :)

Hmmm, maybe it's just me, but in WC2, almost every time I had my armour breached, I managed to land safely... WC1 was another story though, especially those darned Rapiers... ugh! :(

Edit: Oh, and the few WC2 missions in which I lost my armour and didn't make it back were mostly flown in Rapiers too...... strange, huh? ;)

Yeah, armour breaches in WC1/2 weren't that big a deal the first time...
Once your armour was gone though, you definitely had to keep an eye on the shield indicators...

yep quite true about WC1-2 armor, I always found the rapier and the excalibur (in wc3 of course) to have that be the biggest problem. In wc3-4 I always had all my damage repair power given to shield regen and if my armor failed I evened them out, then put all gun recharge to them and used missiles until my shields returned

WC3/4 armour indicators confused me the most. I think fresh armour is green or blue, then moderate damage is yellow, then critical damage is red. Then it seems to return to the original colour. Is that supposed to indicate complete loss of armour?

[Come to think of it, having sensors to register how much armour is left would be a nightmare for designers and engineers!]

Not really. All you need is sensors embedded at different levels of your armor. If the sensor no longer functions, it's probably reasonable to assume you've lost that layer of armor.

The unrealistic thing though, is to treat armor damage like shield damage. I would expect that weapon hits would punch holes (or at least damage) armor locally, rather then remove a complete layer from the whole 'rear armor', 'left armor' etc. So 50% damage to your rear armor could mean that you've got say 33% of your rear with full armor remaining, 33% with partial (damaged) armor and 33% with no armor at all. Meaning that 1 in three shots to your rear are now going to do serious damage to your internal systems.

Still, in some of the games I'm sure you can take some system damage with armor still remaining, so maybe it already works that way.

Yeah, I really hated it in Privateer how you could have more than half your armour left (especially with the strong isometal stuff), yet have components completely destroyed. Also, most of your components were placed in the rear of the ship (targeting was the only component at the front, I think manoeuvring jets and weapons get damaged at the sides) so that the slightest scratch to your armour would highlight almost all your components in yellow. :(

That's what I meant, when all of your armour was gone (the armour was completely breached) and you got hit again in that location, that was bad. Of course if your armour got hit but still got some, it was no problem (unlike Armada e.g.)

I disagree... unless your shields were also down, no major damage was inflicted on your fighter...
Of course, with shields down and armour breached, a few laser shots are enough to put you out of business...

I'm not too fond of the Rapier myself. I'm replaying WC1 now, and I'm just getting to the missions in rapiers. Everybody's excited I get to fly a rapier, but I'm not. I'll take a raptor over a rapier anyday. Especially in my current mission, I have to escort a captured Ralari to the Tiger's Claw, and somehow, whenever I hit afterburners, I always crash into something, be it the Ralari or an enemy. And then I'm dead. Again... :(
Ah well, so far none of my escorts got destroyed, and no fellow pilots are dead (to be magically reincarnated in SM) which is A LOT better than the last time I played WC1. :D

I find the Rapier to *light* to my usage almost good in shields but very weak in armor (as someone says in the game: Hornet armor) and the two lasers and two neutron gun doesn´t satisfies me.
But the Raptor is another thing almos a god in WC1, excellent shield, armor and vel. 2 neutron and 2 mass driver. as you can see there is a pattern

Raptor------)Thunderbolt---------)Shrike ?

Oh my God, I didn't think I had to point out that, of course, your shields have to be down as well.

But Ghost, I don't see a continuity in your example since I liked the Raptor and Tbolt very much but really disliked the Shrike. She was already too cumbersome/slow in relation to other fighters and too poorly armed (I mean she had good guns with the charging mass and the Stormfire but not enough energy to use them).
