Shipnames

Guess what? I'm posting a list of German ship names for no damn reason whatsoever! (Don't worry, it's NOWHERE as long as Cadfael's :)):


Bismarck: Prussian statesman, 1870s; German battleship, destroyed battlecruiser HMS Hood, sunk by HMS Ark Royal And King George V.

Luzgow: battlecruiser, WWI.

Scharnhorst: battlecruiser, WWI; battleship, WWII.
Gneisenau: battlecruiser, WWI, battleship, WWII.

Deutchland: name for Germany; German battleship, WWI; WWII.

Nassau: battleship, (1908) German response to the Dreadnought; generally accept4ed as inferior but served with distinction during battle of Jutland.

Kaiser: German clas of pre-dreadnought battleships, late 1800s; class of German WWI battleships; name comes from rulers of Germany (Kaisers).


And (just for kicks) Japanese names!


Kirishima: WWI\II battleship; sunk by USS Washington and South Dakota 14 November 1942.

Kaga: Originally slated to become battleship; later converted to aircraft carrier. Launched Pearl Harbor attack with Akagi, Hiryu, Soyu, Shokaku, and Zuikaku, and sukn at battle of Midway with the first three.

Yamato: name for Japan; Japanese battleship (1943), sunk by massive air and sea attack April 1945. Also seen in Space Battleship Yamato; Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Mogami: WWII cruiser.

Nagato: WWI\II battleship; survived war, sunk at Bikini Atoll atomic bomb tests 1946.

Haruna: WWI\II battleship; sunk near end of war.

Mikasa: Admiral Togo's flagship at Battle of Tsushima Straits, 1905; now museum at Yokosuka.

Soryu: WWII Carrier. One of four aircraft carriars that launched the attack on Pearl Harbor, 7 December 1941, sunk the following year at Battle of Midway 1942.



(BTW, native German or Japanese speakers are welcome to help work out the TRUE meaning of these names ^_^).
 
Please don't do stupid things for no reason. In fact, not doing stupid things at all would be nice.
