Nevertheless on this matter, I'm pretty sure no one pinned his medal collection to his flightsuit while fighting Kats... :)

I DO mpanty ! I'm pretty proud of my medals... :D

It's *possible*... but you have to be very quick and very lucky <G> Ram one of the Gratha, missile one of them and then pray you can shoot down the other two in time.
Constant taunting also helps. If you continually cycle through targets and taunt, it gives you a few extra (and very important) seconds.

I *believe* taunt #3 is the most effective one.

It is quite interesting that there is a difference though. I wonder what that is all about.

It's *probably* a speed issue... the KS version runs at *exactly* the intended speed for WC1, whereas the original WC1 had no speed limiter... fighters would handle slightly differently on a 386/33 versus a 286/12 and so forth.

Something else that I've noticed is that the briefing music in both KS and the CD version (which included the add ons) is never fully played.

All the music was re-done in digital whateverness... and in some cases, not all of it is on the CD <G> (The digital music files are very large... so there's less music or somesuch).

I've searched Google, but can't find an answer to this one either. How far can you be promoted in WC1? I could swear it was Col., but I could be wrong. I am almost positive that Lt. Col. is attainable though.

On a related note, are the promotions handled differently in KS then in the original release?

In WCI the highest rank is Lt. Colonel
In WCISMI & II the highest rank is Colonel
The same thing in KS

Mmmhhh... I think you might be wrong Ghost...

In WC1 the highest attainable rank is MAJOR.
In SM1&2, provided you transfer your character (with all kills, medals, and rank) when you start the Secret Missions, the highest attainable rank is LT. COL.

If *I* am wrong though, how does one achieve COLONEL?

Yes, you are right mpanty.
But for one strange reason i thought that you were full Colonel at the end of SMII

Promotions are exactly the same in KS as regular DOS. It's essentially the same game.

The highest rank you can get in WC1 & SM1 is Major. You can make Lt. Col. 'randomly' in SM2, and you're promoted to Colonel at the end of the game.

You've all been a lot of help so far. Thanks. :)

Now I've finished WC1, and want to move on the SM1. I have both SMs in the original packaging, but as I'm rather, um, particular about the condition of my collections, I'd really rather not use that original media (plus my FDD is not working anyway). So, I got out my WC1+SM1&2 on CD (after donning the linen gloves of course :D ), and put it in the drive and hoped to be able to install the add ons. No such luck. I see a file called SM2.exe, but other than that there just seems to be an installation file for the main game, and an origin batch file, which is giving me static b/c I don't have certain DOS files (I'm running 98SE), and since my FDD is on the fritz, well......

Does anybody know of anyway to get these add ons installed from the Deluxe edition CD (preferably w/o having to try to dig up a copy of DOS 6.22 for those files)?

Also, does anyone know why Origin gipped us of the WC1 & 2 add ons in KS? What difference would 1 more CD make? On the scale of a pressing, it works out to pennies, and they could have just thrown in more trailers or what not to fill it.

Woah -- we almost didn't get SO1/SO2 *at all*. We owe some very determined people at Origin who clashed with management bigtime for that one... <G>

The addons just hadn't been converted by the time the game had to ship, IIRC -- so they came up with the online distribution thing... which was probably measured and used for some sort of market research. Which might bave lead to some sort of online-release WC game... <G>

I did not know that, but I also didn't mean over all, rather, just with the re-release. Seems to me that being incomplete like KS is, just doesn't make any sense. It's supposed to be the entire WC series, up to and including 3, well, with 4 add on packs missing, it's hardly the entire WC series up to that point. It's not much different that leaving out one of the main titles, just not as obvious. :)

In any event, that still doesn't help me with my current dilemma.... :(

Ok, well, I failed at every attempt to get this to work. I'll try to keep it short, but I'll tell you all b/c it's almost kinda funny.

I tried installing SM1&2 from the WC1Deluxe Ed. CD, but that did not work. It needed a few DOS files. Well, my FDD is busted, and my Server's NIC is driverless at the moment, and my other client PC's FDD is also busted. So I borrowed my grandmothers laptop to transfer all of my DOS 6.22 files to my client PC, then to my own. Success, right? Nope. I had to expand the files, and, um, 1 was still missing. After much online searching, I find that it's not even needed, the installer just looks for the name. So I created it. Success! Well, almost. The installer ran now, but it wasn't much of an installer, it really tried to just run the game, which didn't work at all, it bombed out for some reason. So, I thought since there was no installation, and all the files were in Gamedat, I could just copy that dir to my working one. Well, then KS woulnd't launch. So, since I made a backup of that dir, I undid it, and tried again, not copying over existing files. Still no SM. Transfer.exe also didn't behave right, the pointer was stuck in the lower right corner. At this point, I gave up. Since it was mentioned that they were available for D/L (which I either didn't know, or, more likely forgot), I looked for that. In the process I found a link to the EA FTP site. The link was dead, but I started rooting around and.... (the point of all this, finally), I found them still on there, publicly accessible, just buried.

If anyone is interested (I always played from the original, never had a need for KS on slower hardware, so I never got them), go to ftp.ea.com/pub/origin/patches/kilrathi, and there they are, SM and SO, both 1&2 of each! :D

I installed them and they work. Only thing now, is that the transfer seems to only acknowledge SM1, not 2, but I'll figure that out too. heh heh :)

Yes... that's why they're sitting in the CIC's download section. They were released for download by OSI shortly after Kilrathi Saga was released.

Doh! My bad. Sorry. :D

Oh, sorry, I thought you were complaining about not having the addons on the same CD as the original games, not that they didn't exist period <G>

Wow... there isn't an "admin was here" sign on that post, but we can pretty much guess that happened... :)
