My Dream

Would a flat plane textured to look like a planet work?
What is the highest texture resolution which flight commander supports.
And most importantly for me, does it support Cockpits?
Intrasystem jump system (bad name for it sorry)
all it is is a menu showing all the systems in the wing commander universe, and which ones link to which, look at universe map you'll understand. when you open it, it will need to start in the system your in.

The jump system works by you select a nav point with a jump nod, you fly there, fly into the node, hit jumpdrive. exit jump space in a new system, open navigation panel, select nav point and go! Doe Flight Commander have a navpoint system like the one used in Wing Commander 1,2,3, 4 where you can choose to go to nav two and then go to nav one after? this would help a lot I think, all the jump button does is loads a new system.

Yes, flat planets are fine, but you can't land on them.
That's already 100% working.
Planets should be pretty easy.
A 3d landable planet would be trivial also, as I mentioned before.

Resolution:
Anything is fine, but speed depends on your video card.
Right now the user can choose between
640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768.
I think most people will keep it at 800x600

Cockpits aren't implemented, but that wouldn't be that difficult, the 3d cockpits from Prophecy can be extracted,
I think. I might have a look at that over summer if I have time.

Actually no, you can't switch nav points in flight commander. Thats why jumps, and switching navs, would be complex. Flight commander takes you along exactly one path throught the nav points. Nav 1, Nav 2, Nav 3, etc, in order.

You may want to check your email, you'll find a present there.

Eddie.

NOOOOO!!!! dont use the Prophecy cockpits. AHHH!! I thought noone liked them, the best cockpits ever were wing commander 1,2 ,3 style Privateer had damn good ones as well.
Nobody seemed to like prphecy's they were too low detail. 3d planets could be a problem. the Axion planet shader does not save as a texture, you would have to do some pretty hefty programming to get it to work in flight commander. It would be cool though. I have a 3d mesh of earth if you want it. I also have the Waterloo and the Sabre from Wing Commander 2. I'm the only one with these meshes that I know of.

Well, 2d cockpits would work just as well, I suppose.
Keep in mind that they won't look so detailed anymore at 800x600 :).
Right, you'd need a 2d map of the planet to wrap around a sphere. If you can send me the waterloo and Sabre, I'll take them. If you could send them as 3ds or obj, that would be fine.

It's your lucky day I'm sending you my model of the Excalibur, WC3 version it's grey, red, and black not that crappy white version, I'm also sending Blackmane base, the Excalibur comes with textures, the other meshes don't.

That we are, this game will be all new and hopefully the best wc game yet!
Verrrrrrrrrrry nice present
pity about the nav thing though, 'sigh' would have made it very easy.

You sure are ambitious :). That sounds really like a LOT of work and although I have absolutely no knowledge about such things, I am sure that you will encounter many hardships. I do hope that you get on with your project nevertheless. And I wouldnot take it too hard if you can't accomplish everythimg. Even if you just realize about the half of what you planned it can still be a great game.

I suck at programming, so I won't be able to do much for this excepting graphics of course. I am however going to continue to explore another option though, I am downloading a program which uses point and click to create complex 3d games, I will try to see if I can get a spaceflight sim going. If I can then We may get "Privateer 3" much sooner than you think. It is something to think about at least. In either case, you should check out http://www.clickteam.com It looks really interesting to say the least.

I just thought of something, Eddie if the privateer code section were to open up the ship files and edit them whenever you purchased a new upgrade, that would allow you to modify ships. Would that be easy to program?

Sounds good, but beware: many things sound good but aren't.
Now that was a piece of wisdom. :) Anyway keep us updated and I wish you all the luck you can get.

Part of the thrill of playing the original privateer game is being able to put yourself into it. Will there be CGI characters to interact with? Or is this even doable? I know this would require voice overs and 3d modeled people. So it would be a lot of work. And who could forget insults? There's nothing quite like having the Kilrathi, call you a hairless ape in stereo surround sound. Sounds intriguing though...

Yeah, if you can dynamically generate missions,
you can dynamically modify ship stats as well.
The privateer programmer could probably pull that off.

Er...I liked Prophecy's. :D Maybe it's because I was used to them...I played the Mechwarrior games, and I appreciated how their cockpits, while low detail, were fairly unobstuctive. Still, I'd love the WingII or Privateer cockpits...if they'd turn off while entering combat...:)

I'm happy to help out any way I can. Just post it and I'll see what I can do.

I definitly prefered the open view of the Prophecy cockpits. I always turned off the cockpits in the other games too. Plus i thought it was cooler having the hud look like it was holographicly projected, maybe through the helmet facemask or on its own, like they did in the movie.

I always got into the game more when I could see the cockpit and everything that was going on it, from the pilot's hands on the stick to blown out panels and sparking wires.

Best, Raptor
