Military vs. Civilian ships

The Victory's escorts are probably older than the Paradigm (actually, the Paradigm is fairly new -- the first one entered service in 2664...).

The last major battle with the Kilrathi in Gemini was in 2658 -- Confed is dug in too deeply for it to be worth launching a major attack on the sector.

That's what I meant by scratching off the old armour! :)

The shields being on side must be correct, I am looking at the back of my P box, there is a shoot of a cockpit were we can see the hull/shield indicator, its divided in four parts.

Yep, they do. At last I never got armor damage as long as my shields were up. I think the front/aft shields are two semi-spheres. One starting roughly at your nose and protecting everything from there, regardless if it is front-left, front-right, front-bottom or front-up, to the middle of you ship where it meets the semi-sphere from the aft shield.

In most of the games, that's correct -- the shield generator generates to half-spheres, fore and aft of the ship. In Armada and Privateer, the shield generator generates four quarter-spheres, aft, fore, left and right.

Ugh, that's kinda hard to visualise. I've always thought of the shields as a 'bowl' for the fore and aft, and a 'C' or half a cylinder for the left and right. Of course, when there's only fore and aft, then it'd be two hemispheres.

The way the shields are generated in Privateer are probably the best way (four quarter-spheres). If you take a hit on the side, it doesnt affect the other 3 quarter spheres and you can draw from those quadrants to recharge the one that took a hit a bit faster than normal. (hitting Shift-S to turn up the shields will re-direct energy and recharge to the quadrant taking hits, thus making it recharge quicker). Im not too shure about Armada if this method works. Privateer 2 also generates 4 quarter spheres, but there isnt any way to increase or decrease the charge rate. Bummer! :(
