Now I'm triply confused.

In the X-Wing novels, four fighters makes a flight, three flights to a squadron (12) and three squadrons to a wing.

How does it go in Wing Commander again? And there seems to be a difference in the number of fighters per squadron/wing/whatever. Vesuvius has 400 fighters divided into four squadrons and the Midway has 252 fighters divided into three squadrons... oh I give up.
 
Speaking of wings, how is that so junior an officer as Stilleto was entrusted with an wing? Was that a by-product of the war, where losses might have made it neccessary to put very young officers in command positions? Or was it something new that peacetime had given Confed the luxury of trying out?

That particular wing was made up of plebes, like Casey and Maestro, Zero and Dallas. She had the most seniority and showed the strongest grasp of leadership qualities so she was made an honorary 1st Lt. and put in charge of the wing.
 
Not really -- the former CO of the wing was killed in action during the fight with the Demon's Eye pirates. Stiletto was the pilot responsible for saving the rest of her element, bringing them back against superior enemy forces... for that, she was made acting WC of the Diamondbacks.
