BREAKING NEWS: FOX to Re-Release Wing Commander DVD (September 17, 2011)

Some versions of the original DVD actually did have some extra. I think most all had at least the trailer.

The actual disks look like their identical in content... Basically Enlish Dolby Digital and Surround audio tracks, with a couple of trailers and tv spots. THe disk label is nearly the same but is straight black insted of the faint white on silver with a contour line. The 'booklet" in the cover is the same. It's bascially a new cover insert. But for six dollars I'm happy to have two copies. I've had my original since 1999... But it still makes no sense why they didn't at least make this anamorphic.

There's a spanish DVD? that I've heard has the EPK interviews IIRC. I've broken down what we know about the various releases over at the wcpedia... which reminds me, I need to scan the new cover still. https://www.wcnews.com/wcpedia/Wing_Commander_Movie_-_DVD_Details

There's at least one or two versions with the featurette from the EPK on it.

The german DVD doesn't have any extras, exept of 2 pages with pictures of the actors but that's it. Also, it only has english and german voices (both 5.1) and english and german subtitles.

The German DVD probably has the best quality picture, though, out of all the releases I know about (PAL speedup aside.)

Would you like to have a screenshot of the German DVD in order to compare it with the other releases?
I don't expect a huge variation in quality, but there's a few of the releases that should have noticably better image quality. There's a few of the European releases that are Anamorphic whereas the R1 release is plain NTSC... Though the PAL verions have a shorter running time so everyone sounds a bit different as well.

It wouldn't hurt to have screenshots of the German disk though. I guess I could make a set of shots from throughout the film and we could make a table with all the shot s from each DVD (where possible) so people could compare. Not sure many people would use it, but it could be an interesting addition to the WCpedia entry.

From which scenes (if possible, exact minute and second) would you like to have screenshots?
I haven't done any yet from the english one yet but I can do that here shortly. Lets try and get a good variety of shots from various lighting conditions: Exterior Pegasus, Interior mess hall, exterior jump to sol, exterior concom, someone in the cockpit. something from the flight deck, somthing from the bridge later in the film when they are in low power mode with the lights low, something from the Concom raid, That should cover most of it. I'll post a set of shots from the R1 DVD here tonight sometime.

I set up the screenshots here at the WCpedia https://www.wcnews.com/wcpedia/Wing_Commander_Movie_-_DVD_screenshot_comparisons

The timestamp is in the file name though you will probably still have to try and match the shots since the PAL version is about 4 minutes shorter all together than theNTSC verson. If you have a WCpedia account you can upload the German DVD shots yourself or you can zip them up and email them to me (ad@wcnews.com) and I'll edit them into the page somehow.

The first time I got my hands on the movie was a region 1 rental, that was not for sale. It had a cardboard box, and several menu screens in it I have not seen since...

I can get you screenshots of the R1 menus if you want, but I don't think it ever had a cardboard sleeve or box here. So I'm a little curious about this myself.

I've taken all 24 screenshots. I only need to cut out a bit from the black borders and upload them here. 4 have been uploaded already, the remaining 20 will follow later, propably today.
There's indeed a difference: The colours in the German Release are brighter than in the R1 one.

What are you using to take screenshots? If you use the image save built into something like MPC or VLC you shouldn't be getting all the extra border since it will be basically extracting the exact frame from the video. I'd like to avoid any post tweaking if possible.

I have looked for some sort of image capturing function in VLC but I didn't find any and I have the latest version. So I used ctrl-alt-print and Paint. I'm using GIMP to cut out the borders. Shall I cut them with GIMP or shall I recapture the images with VLC if I find the fuction

How can I take screenshots?

To take a snapshot of the video displayed by VLC, you just need to press the pre-defined snapshot hotkey:
  • Windows / Linux / Unix: Ctrl+Alt+S
  • Mac OS X: Command+Alt+s
To change it, go to Preferences -> Interface -> Hotkeys settings, check Advanced options, and set Take video snapshot.
You can also take a snaphot via the menu Video -> Snapshot.
To change the snapshot format or directory, go to Preferences -> Video.

Yeah, if you can redo them without using an intermediary like Paint that would be best. Give Chris' suggestion a shot. Thanks for doing this though. I appreciate it.

Thx Chris.
Alright, I've recaptured the Screenshots using VLC. All of them have been uploaded. They can be found here. The files's names start with "WCM-German-".

Awesome! Those look great. Unless you beat me to it I'll set them up side by side later tonight.
