Spaceman
Out of all the ships in the WC universe, including Priv/RF and P2, which one would you rather be in if faced with a hord of enemies, be it Kilrathi or the Bugs. My choice would be the Centurion as #1 and the Dragon as #2. Simply cause both ships can regenerate their afterburner fuel supply. Who wants to run out of afterburner fuel with bunches of bogies chasing you! Which gun combination would you arm your ship with? My Centurion would have 2 Fission cannons and 2 Tachyon guns on front and 2 Fission cannons on the tail turret, and the standard load out on the Dragon, although the Cloudburst would do nicely on the Dragon! :)

My favorite ship would have to be the Excalibur, as it could seriously kick some butt. I never cared for the ships too much in WCP and especially SO because they were just too good and the enemies ships were far too weak in comparison. But flying the excalibur was always a treat in WC3, I also really liked the Avenger and the Vindicator.

I got my centurion with fission guns all over it.(I even kill destroyers with this ship, and not a dent on my ship)

So that sould be my favorite ship, with full upgrades.

WC I -never played.
WC II -Sabre(dont have the extras missions)
WC III -Excalibur
WC IV -Dragon
WC V -It may come as a suprise but its the Wasp

I got P2 but I dont like it.

Hi,

Best Fighter(featured in a WC game) would be the Excal`s.

I also like the Vins and the Rapier (back when that was a Hi-tech fighter).

I would like to see the BW Retaliator in a game though.

Cheers

My favorite has to be the Hellcat. SHe's the plane i would trust the most. That of the panther or the dragon. But the hellcat will always dominate my list.

Hmm...I have a radically different idea (and apparently flying style) than most people I see. Well anyway, here's my favs.

Number 1 best EVER: Longbow.
Come on! It looks cool, has a good weapons loadout, and with it's shields + armor, you don't need to worry about getting hit. I find it works better when there's a Longbow and at least one Hellcat. The Hellcat picks off what I can't quite get to.

2: Devastator.
WOW! If this fighter looked alittle cooler, it may take the cake. The plasma gun is intense. If you can aim, you don't need manueverabilty or speed in this fighter. Half the time I barely move at all in a Devastator and let the action come to me.

3: Excalibur (WC3)
The Excalibur was a good solid fighter in WC3. I noticed it wasn't as good in WC4, and it downright sucked in WCPSO if you use the edit thingy to play with it. But I like this fighter. It has some speed, weapons, but still enough shields/armor so I don't have to be a mexican jumping bean out there like i've noticed alot of people are.

There aren't any of the older fighters on there, I know. I've played the old games, but didn't particularly like any of the fighters. Some of them were decent like the Broadsword.

Well, naturally my Fav depends on the era

WC1 : Definately the Raptor.
While the Rapier was nice, the extra firepower of the Raptor makes it the king. Althoug a little sluggish on the turn, its reasonably fast once it gets going. Against heavy fighters, it's good enough to get in close up their tailpipe and let them have it. Against lights, just go head to head and they'll be gone before your shields are even scratched.

WC2 : Tough call, probably the Broadsword or Crossbow.
While the Sabre and the Morningstar were alright, I found that by the time you got to fly them the 'difficulty level' had kicked in making them fairly fragile relative to the other fighters. Those 3 mass drivers on the Broadsword kicked serious ass. Pity about the lack of afterburners. Come to think of it, I didn't mind the Ferret/Super Ferret either - lot's of speed & manouvreability and missiles were never my thing.

WC3 : Probably XCal. T-Bolt a close second.
Heavy firepower was always my thing. Longbow has plenty of that, but its far too slow and sluggish to deliver it, particularly against light fighters. Both the XCal and T-bolt have lots of firepower and the speed and manouvreability to deliver it to the rear of an enemy. Tip : turn OFF the auto-tracking on the guns, particularly against corvettes/capships. Your gunnery skills have got you this far without them, and autotracking drains serious power which could be better spent on your shields.

WC4 : Tough call, probably the Dragon
Nice ship, not that I chose to fly it that much. The Banshee wasn't too bad either if you made use of that scatter gun.

WCP : Easy. Vampire
Heh heh quad tachyon heh heh! Get on tail. Brief burn to point blank range fire. Wait for guns to recharge. Repeat. Boom!
The old Plasma gun on the Devastator wasn't too bad when you need to make things go boom, but the ship was just too damn slow. High difficulty levels and/or loadsa bugs and you just get cut to pieces.

Privateer : There can only be one. Centurion
Quad Tachons, Level 5 shields. When you can earn 10000+ creds for a pirate bounty, who needs cargo.

Privateer 2 : Gotta be the Fridge, I mean Freij MkII
Great shields, weapons, speed, manouvreablilty, armor. Lousy price tag. Drakkar is best value for money while you're saving up. Lousy armor, but if the never get inside your shields ...

Most Fav ship overall?
Gotta go for that Vampire. Although full Tachyons drain serious power (you've only got enough juice for two or three shots) and have a slow refire rate, I just love the ability to deal serious damage in one hit. It rewards accurate shooting over spraying. First shot takes out their shields, second sends the cockpit through the engines. Anyone who has suffered the frustration of trying to take out a single Dragon in Descent Freespace knows what I'm talking about.

Azreal: The Dragons are hard to kill for a very good reason. Actually the talk about best ships got me in a WC playing mood so I started up WCP:SO and I've got to say that the Vampire does kick some butt but is almost too powerful against the bugs unless you are going against Devil Rays. The Wasp is WAYYYYYYY too powerful as the dust cannon will kill anything it hits way too fast. And I still do not understand the point of the Lamprey except as a joke.

The Raptor was the best fighter of the 2654 era. It could tear through anything it faced. I can't think of any other ship that gave you such an advantage over the enemy. Its only disadvantage, of course, is that you can't chase-down that pesky Salthi that decides to run away.

Oh I'm aware they are meant to be difficult to kill. Actually they are quite easy to kill - they never look over their shoulders (do they have shoulders?) so wait for it to attack someone else, lock a anti-bomber or swarm missile on, close to point blank and boom. My point is just that I felt that in Freespace the guns are too underpowered (or maybe the shields are too overpowered) and that's for everybody. While I would fail to complete mission objectives, you could count the number of times I actually died on one hand, and that was usually a lucky missile hit or something. My favorite weapon (and flying style) is something like the WCP Tachyon - slow rate of fire and high power drain, but a marksman can deliver a lot of damage with a single well placed hit.

Well, to para-phrase yourself, as a Class A Space Superiority Fighter, the Vampire is mean to powerful for a very good reason. Perhaps what it really lacks is a serious rival, or at least a serious AI in a serious rival. I haven't played WCP:SO (gasp :O) so I don't know about the dust cannon. Even the twin Tachyons on the standard wasp were pretty good. As for the Lampreys, I think they are meant to be a heavy duty shield killer or something - they always seem to gun for your capships. I don't think I've ever let them close enough to see what they can do, at least, not that I remember.

WC1 - Never got far into it
WC2 - hard to decide
WC3 - As of just after the first Ariel incursion, I'd have to say the Excal first, T-bolt second. I still say the Excal oughta have a model with a torp. When flying a T-bolt, Vagabond has to be my preferred wingman, except in highly outnumbered missions where Maniac is a good bet. Just be prepared to fend for yourself.
WC4 - never played
Prophecy - Devastator, bar none. Powerful cannon, good missile loadout, though I do need a fighter escort.

Academy - Wraith
Armada - Shok'lar...best fighter in the game. Gotta love a Kilrathi cloaker with real firepower.
Priv 1 - oddly enough, the Tarsus with twin tachyon, twin proton torps, repairbot, and best possible other upgrades. Chicken anyone?

Azrael - the FS dragons are tin cans with good shields, unlike many ships in the WC universe. Banshees work great, especially when coupled with even a piddly little peashooter for killing armor.

A Dragon a Tin can? well they have the same armor/shield rating that a Longbow, and they still have the strongest armor in any fighter being flyed by ConFed.

He's talking about the Freespace Dragon...

And the Lance doesn't have the strongest armor, try the Vampire/Black Vampire, Shrike/Black Shrike, and Devastator/Black Devastator, all of them have stronger armor, with the Black Dev having the strongest at 420 cm equivelant all around.

But if you don't think the Shrike and Dev should count because they are bombers, the Vampire' armor is 20 cm stronger, and the Black Vamps armor is 50 cm stronger.

My favorites are:

WC1: Scimitar. Don't know why, but the mass-drivers can destroy a salth or dralhti in 1 run, if you hit it in the right place
WC2: Never playes it out, but the Epee is good
WC3: The Excalibur is good, but none of the fighters in WC3 is one of my favourites. The Thunderbolt is also good, but is has a poor missile load-out (i guess the 6 guns take in so much space)
WC4: Dragon
WCP: Difficult, but the Panther and the Vampire are good fighters
WCSO: Black Vampire. The guns on this baby rule !

Covering just the mainstream games...

WCI: Raptor, no contest. Heavy gun loadout, ample speed and agility for getting in close (an ace's preference) and pounding an opponent.
WCII: Difficult choice, don't really have a "fave". The Broadsword would be the clear favorite, but needs at least some semblence of afterburners to be great.
WCIII: I love the Excalibur, but it makes the game almost TOO easy. If only you could exchange some missiles for a torpedo, much like we do with the Temblor bomb. Before the Excal arrives, I use the T-bolt whenever it's available -- good gun loadout, and strong defensive systems.
WCIV: Like the WCIII Excal, the Dragon (sorry, I still don't buy this Lance-class stuff) makes it all too easy. For pure dogfighting, the Banshee is quite good, and for overall multi-purpose, the Vindicator. If only we had access to the Bearcat as a regular choice....
WCP: Toss-up between the Panther and Vampire. Of course the latter is an overwhelmingly powerful fighter, but the Panther is a great dogfighter with more simplistic offensive systems.
WCSO: Black Wasp, no contest. Eight Swarmers, and the Dust cannon bring all before me to their knees. :)

I must agree with the Wasp but here are my picks.

WCI Raptor
WCII Morningstar (one word MACE and those three particle guns rock too)
WCIII toss up between Thunderbolt which has the advantage of a torp and of course the EXcal
WCIV another toss up between Vindicator and the Dragon
WCP is the Vampire
WCSO is the Black Wasp

I've said it before, everything has good and bad points, especially in WCP/SO where fighters were specialised, so I don't really have a favourite, but for the sake of it, here's my opinion:

WC1: Raptor - great for capship strikes
Rapier - more suited for dogfights

WC2: Broadsword - best defences, pity about lack of AB's
Sabre - decent dogfighter, pity about armour, but this is only until the special ops.
Morningstar - best dogfighter, lack of missiles don't bother me since I rarely use 'em.

WC3: Thunderbolt - better for strikes than the Longbow
Arrow - for escort/defence missions
Excalibur - once it's available, it should be first choice

WC4: Avenger - lack of speed and manoeuvrability never stopped me
Dragon - obvious choice once it's available

WCP: Vampire - for all the obvious reasons and more
Devastator - only for bombing runs
Repeat for SO, although the Black Wasp is good for its purpose too.
