RSI Reaches Whopping $85M Milestone (July 18, 2015)

The Cloud Imperium Games team doesn't spend much time focusing on its crowdfunding totals these days, and they've long since discontinued discrete stretch goals for reaching additional milestones. So fans who may not be following Roberts Space Industries too closely may not have seen that they ticked past $85 million this past week - contribute by some 926,000 people. There was a time when the team would've been happy if that many people each donated just a couple dollars, but the fact that the per-person average is north of $90 might be the most impressive number of them all here! CIG is focusing on the upcoming Star Marine FPS component, and they should make a pretty big splash at Gamescom in Germany next month.

vinzi also put together this fan trailer of Star Citizen footage intermixed with a Wing Commander audio track. For more crossover, check out the CIC Organization over at RSI.

If CIG can pull off Gamescon well they might just take (a PhD in his own mind) Derek Smart's arguments and send them packing back to his own, badly coded, nightmare MMO. A man who produces games that shitty really has no business critiquing CR's work, even if some of his words might hold some weight however slim. The delays are inevitable given the new scope of the project. Dates are bound to shift as the code matures and expands.

I fell for DS's dream twice with Battlecruiser Millennium and Universal Combat 2.0. It was always a grand idea but always poorly executed.

Never again will I trust another word from that pathological liar.

He's even gone back to his bad old habits of being the game forum crusader from Hell, flaming and banning anyone who offers even reasonable criticism. It's like Compuserve and Usenet all over again.

Yeah, that's why I specifically didn't mention him in the front page post. It's all a calculated BS PR strategy. He's not getting enough attention for his own new space sim that's riding on Star Citizen's coattails, so he's gone back to the old shtick. And it's working, as evidenced by the billion new articles this month about the "infamous" Derek Smart demanding Chris Roberts' resignation, etc, etc. The number of people who even know Universal Combat Advanced is a thing has probably increased 100-fold in a few weeks. It's just a gimmick, and we're all better off just ignoring his garbage.

The online mags and game sites appreciate the click-bait I'm sure. He'll have his 1 - 2 weeks of fame till the next thing. The LOAF insults are irking enough but you don't pay attention to all the haters more then necessary. In my honest belief if DS doesn't like you you're probably doing something right. It's like a right of passage. ;)

In fact I think I found the real cause of his anger towards Chris Roberts. A link from his own sight featuring an editorial from CGW with a previous believed comeback mentions a popular sci-fi game. It can be found elsewhere but why not tax his servers?

To quote, next to the last paragraph under A Simple Plan:

"People were saying to me, why don't you strip it down and make it an action game? Why don't you make it more like WING COMMANDER." Ouch.

Polygon even did a piece regarding him and Line of Defense: http://www.polygon.com/2012/11/14/3553620/the-redemption-of-derek-smart
When you declare a target of hate for a narcissistic personality it's like declaring war. A war in their own mind.

Apparently, DS and Origin Studios are no strangers. Eric Peterson went on record at RSI:

Look, I am no longer at CIG, but I recall when Chris and I were working at Origin, Derek Smart sent several negative emails accusing us of stealing his ideas etc, the guy is just not worth the time to read.

He is just trying to get attention - something none of us should ever give him.

IMHO, I think CIG did the right thing here, that guy is just not worth the trouble.

Ortwin did right refunding him his Kickstarter pledge and voiding his rights to the game, toxic as he was. Most of his tom-foolery began on the Goons' Something Awful forums. Reddit, Twitter, Steam, etc. users have, for the most part, said exactly the same. Total PR stunt. You can hear his contempt for gamers, the industry, and crowd-funding in general here:
http://www.gametrailers.com/videos/he7qdm/line-of-defense-derek-smart--the-outspoken-developer
and his new vaporware (a word he seems to have gained a fondness for): http://store.steampowered.com/app/266620/ The comments section is priceless. Ironically, this whole spiel of his may generate the exact opposite effect. Already there are many backers who've pledged in protest of his shenanigans as kindly pointed out above. :D

Taking Wingman's advice, that is the last time I personally will taint these forums with his name.

Looking forward to August! The Roberts brothers are on a roll with Erin now taking a more commanding role after the departures of producers Alex Mayberry and Travis Day.

Don't worry about me - I've got my dream job building spaceships for my hero, I'm making the game I've always dreamed about... I work with my best friends, the woman I love... and we live in paradise. No Internet drama could ever change that :) Truly, it's not something that even registers when we're working.

Only thing that could make this better is if we had Chris, ace and everybody else on the project!

I look forward to Star Citizen reaching the one million backers milestone.

Come to think of it, has any game ever had a million people shelling out money for it a year or more before the full release date?

Just test the new PTU Build 1.1.5

just leave this here:
The SC Ferret ( or from its size the X-Wing).

Imagine 3 of them start from my 890J or 16 from a Idris, 4 confirmed on a Javelin. Alone the Gatling-Sound :)

:/
I actually spent some time reading into this; Derek Smart comes off as sour grapes. Chris has a reputation for excellence in his video games, Derek has a less than stellar reputation for mediocrity, big on concept but failing to deliver, the old green eyed monster rears its head.
What would Chris standing down as CEO achieve?

Sorry it all comes off as sour grapes that Chris might (and probably will) succeed where DS has "failed" many, many times.
If it is all a cynical attempt to garner some media spotlight on himself, then it worked (kind of), in the lamest way possible.

WOW! The Merlins cockpit looks sweet. I like the HUD much better here than the other ships in SC. This is very old school Xwing or Tie Fighter games cockpit style.

I do like that central Gatling cannon, that's a great piece of design!
It sounds really meaty as well. I was waiting for the Military Hornet to come on-sale again, but I am severely tempted by that!
I love all the little touches, like the helmet faceplate with the little RSI in the bottom, really stoked for the full game, I sense a new graphics card (and a new HDD) in the near future, getting my wallet warmed up now

Only thing that could make this better is if we had Chris, ace and everybody else on the project!

I don't suppose y'all would be interested in someone to construct a few languages for some of the alien species, or perhaps (some time down the road) somebody to put together a pnp version of the game, would y'all?

Do the Connies still come with a merlin these days?
It should.

Another vid from the redesign Connie

But the new Connie is more a missileboat then my Vision of the Reta.

And replace the 85X with the Merlin

Strike Wing reporting in :D :D :D

And all the discussion of Derek and so one! Sorry but take a look at all These models! They not made in a few days with the Quality we see in SC! It takes time to make a good game with a lots of models.

And still thats not all. The Caterpillar, Merchantman, UEE Corvette, Cruiser and Battlecruiser, the Vanduul Carrier, Xi'An Capitalships and fighters, Banu Capitalships, Endeavor, Crucible, Prowler, Dragonfly are not in this Video!
