Favorite Wing Commander Battle/Mission

That is correct. The first depot is close to the jump point you use to get to kilrah and the 2nd one is closer to Kilrah and has 2 t-bombs at it I think, in case Blair wanted someone else to have one. In the novel he chooses not to though.

There were actually three asteroids depots (Theta II-class) set up by Covert Operations in the Kilrah System for the operation: one to rearm the Excaliburs when they arrived (closest to the jump point), one to rearm them on their way out after the attack (further from the jump point) and one containing the two Temblor Bombs (near the outer moon of Kilrah).

When Blair and company arrived in the system, they discovered that the location of the first depot had been compromised... so they did their initial refueling at the second one (meant for their return) instead.

The second (return) depot was the TCS Chinook (LKL8864), and the third depot (holding the bombs) was the TCS Altair (RD 102). The name of the first, unused depot is unknown.

The strike in the Venice Offensive in WC1 - mission: to destroy a Kilrathi Command Center. Just you and your fellow wingman (Hunter) against overwhelming odds.

Certainly a great mission... but one note: the Venice Offensive referenced in Wing Commander IV is not the same as the Venice series of missions in the original Wing Commander. The 'Venice Offensive' that Eisen served during was 'thirty years' before his line... which would put it in 2643, some eleven years before Wing Commander I.

BTW, which battle does anyone think can be a "Battle Of Midway" for the Confederation?

I don't think there is one, in so much as what Midway represents - the specific turning point in that war. There's no easy equivalent... the Confederation starts winning battles early in the war and keeps winning them throughout - they just find themselves perpetually overproduced and outnumbered regardless of battlefield success.

Certainly all three of Dr. Forstchen's original novels borrow elements directly from battles like Midway... but I don't think any one of them really fits as Midway in a broader historical sense.

Thanks for correcting LOAF...been a little while since I have read the novel or played...forgot about that one...

Likewise to you Dundradal, I hadn't read End Run since reading the rest of the books that followed in chronological order. I just remembered it as complete domination by Confed but didn't recall the Kilrathi having a superior # of ships.

Ah, my wording was a bit wrong there. Should of just left it as 'Venice Strike'. I do know of Eisens short reference of him serving during the Venice offensive, but my comment did not mean any particular connection with such battle as my one I had posted is completley different. Though I should of changed the title.

Also I like to comment the WCIV battle with Vesuvias and racing down to the assembly. Certainly a non-stop action.

Confed did not have an advantage in numbers. It was facing 7 heavy carriers that carried the best the kilrathi had to offer. Confed was able to win because they hit the kats when they were committed to a ground assault. They jumped in when the assault troops were in their ships and the fighters were loaded with anti-installation munitions instead of torps. Confed launched a large first strike that swept through their carriers and troop transports. They also took losses however within their own capships. One carrier lost and one heavily damaged.

Confed won by setting the place and time of battle and having superior knowledge of their enemy's intentions. They were the ones outnumbered and outgunned.
I decided to re-read chapter 4 which describes the invasion of Vukar Tag. It appears that during this invasion Confed had the Kilrathi outgunned. In the follow-up assault when the Kilrathi threw everything they had at Vukar Tag, the Kilrathi had superior numbers, but I was reminiscing about the initial invasion where Confed had complete superiority.

Which is not surprising since they sent in 2 CVEs and the best confed ground troops against a planet that was not strongly defended at the time of the attack (compare the forces in system when the Johnny Greene was there versus when they take the system). I also don't know if I'd consider that part of the main battle at Vukar. The major fleet engagement did not happen for more than a week after the initial assault as the Tarawa was almost at kilrah's front door.

I just played probably the most fun mission yesterday. I was playing WC3 and the mission was Alcor 1. I ended of fighting along side Primate, Ragtop, and the Victory against well over a dozen enemy fighters at one time.

At Nav. 1 the 8 Darkets took out Hobbes (Nightmare difficulty level) and I managed to take out 2 of them before afturburning and autosliding through to the next destinations. After doing this through all of them without using autopilot, I finally ended up at the Victory with Primate and Ragtop fighting the Sorthak fighters. While we were fighting the second wave of Sorthaks nearly all the enemy fighters from the other navs seemed to converge at about the same time. We were fighting 2 Sorthaks, 2 Vaktoths, 4 Paktahns, and 6 Darkets (some Dralthi's also popped up at the Victory- not sure how they did since the game guide doesn't say they pop up at the Victory).. I lost track, but we were fighting anywhere from 14-18 fighters. It was pretty intense.. so that's my current favorite mission.

Outrun Ella. It's just fun to fight off the massive Confed attack. They throw everything but the kitchen sink at the Intrepid.

i like the locanda missions in WC3, and there are bunch of good mission in WC4...

some WC1 is also very good, i remember as facinated that you could solve some of them in diffrent ways...

I always wondered why you only get one wingman for that mission instead of three, given that there are several other missions that give you three wingmen and this one is so massive.

Because it's supposed to be difficult. I think that ir order to create a mission where you are that outnumbered would require much more Confed fighters if you had a 3 fighter wing.

was just thinking and I remembered another incident that doesn't get much attention but greatly affected the war...

Kruger's "hijacking" of the TCS Blitzkreig during a battle to pursue kilrathi forces after an attack in the Landreich. His commanding officer, Vance Richards said that he thought it was Kruger's act that got him transfered to Intel work. The incident would set both their careers on their more famous tracks.

I'd love to fly that ship

Love that mission in the Tamayo system were you get to step into the excalibur for the first time if you made the right choice. Blasting those transports apart after taking down their escorts. Perfect mission in my opinion. Also love the return when you get to hear flash whine. I remember skipping that several times as I always used to skipped the landing sequence.

Was kinda upset in wing commander 4 when I didn't get to fly the excalibur again. Didn't really fly against it that much which also made me kinda sad.

That was a pretty cool mission, I always liked Rollin's comment about the residents of Locanda 4 naming their newborns after you. I also liked the Blackmane missions, where you had to defend the transports that were trying to get to the base. To me, both were mission sets with real positive outcomes.

There are many battles I recall, many of them are favourites but then if I was to find an all time best it would be -

Battle of Earth
- To me it was almost Humanity's last stand and it was a do or die situation. I would love to see General Duke leading the marines aboard the supercarriers taking out the Kilrathi marines...your typical all round Duke Nukem and what not.....
Man I can imagine a movie scence

My favorite mission is Enyo 1, the first Wing Commander mission I ever played. Simply because it was so astounding the first time I played it. Talked to Shotglass, was welcomed aboard the Claw, the first briefing which filled me with a bit of tension ("this is no training sim..."), then the first dogfight against the Dralthi's.

What I really remember though is how utterly -terrifying- it was to fly through the asteroids for the first time. God that gave me the creeps. To this day I'm nervous to fly in them, and hate dogfighting there too.

Actually I went into the asteroid field and almost fell asleep. A little hint, check the manual, it tells you exactly how to deal with asteroids.

Yeah, and you can't just drop to 250 kps and go to sleep. I never reduced speed anyhow. You get through much faster at a higher speed and just avoiding the asteroids.
