Yaaaaaargh!!! (Sounds of computer smashing)

Saturnyne

Vice Admiral
I've been playing the same mission of WC3 for 2 hours! The problem is those stupid corvettes.... Other than "fly in and take out the turrets first", which is NOT as easy for me as it might be for anyone else, there has to be a better way to take them out, and get the least amount of damage possible!

I can't even take them out in Prophecy, because it's twice as hard to hit the stupid turrets.

@#$@%&%&$#^#@^@#^%$%&*^%*$%@!!@#!$&&# Corvettes...............

Oh, on another note, what's your flying style like when engaging fighters? I rush forward, guns blazing, and when my opposing ship turns to avoid collision, I turn after it and chase it until it's dead.

First calm down.
Right now to tactics.
WC3: The corvettes are nuisances at best. The quickest way to get them is torpedoes (Thud VII & Longbow). If no torps then use autoslide (Arrow & Excalibur). If not capable of autoslide then try this. Line up on the corvettes rear and maintain the same heading as it. Fire from max range. Your blasts should take out the rear turret. Then weave your way in close. Match speed and hug the corvette's 6. Spin slightly to hit the remaining turrets. Once disarmed the corvette's an unconfirmed kill

WCP: You can't lock torps or kill the turrets so don't bother. Use autoslide (Piranha, Vamp or Panther).
If no autoslide then use the Shrike or Devastator. My favorite tactic is to fly circles around the corvette letting your turrets take it out. Takes a while and a bit tricky to get the right coarse that keeps you scratch free & the corvette in your firing lane. Alternatively charge your mass drivers to max (Tigershark & Shrike), hit the afterburner & weave in past the turret fire. When within range fire then dodge out. Repeat 'till corvette is crispy critters.
Finally if these fail you can reduce the difficulty level. And don't forget the terribly unsatisfying invicibility option.
Fight the good fight,
Penguin.

PS: My style is approximately the same as yours

My favorite tactic for destroying corvettes is the auto slide. Simply afterburn to max speed, auto slide and make passes as close as you can to the corvette. If you`re flying an Excaliber, you already have the auto tracking, so you don`t have to worry much about aiming.

As for flying tactics, if you`ve got the victim coming straight at you, I play chicken with him and cause as much damage as possible with the guns. If I`m not his target than I tail him and rip him to pieces from behind.
Sometimes, especially in WC3 if I`m flying against ships with rear turrets, I like to slide and shoot them from the side.

My style's basically the same

Corvettes in WCP were easy. Line up one their six and come in fast and hard, then stick right to them. You take minimal damage, and they blow up

When in bombers, use the plasma or CMD.

Well... I flew the same mission in WC3 against the corvettes... about 10 times. Ten times, I died. Goddam Corvettes...

I'm never playing WC3 again.

I said that in a fit of frustration... I've never flown a mission this hard, and I hate it to death. If I make it to past all the corvettes, my wingman gets shot down and I have no fuel left. So, I get shot down by the other bane of my existance, Vaktoths.

Hellcats blow goats against corvettes, and Arrows do nothing but worse. I did use that strategy though... take out the middle turret, and sit there about a centimeter from its butt, firing away. The only thing is, that cannon is the one that really eats at your shields, so you have to make a few passes...

I hate that mission... I don't want to lower the difficulty or use the "-mitchell" function. Maybe it's just my being stubborn that's preventing me from finishing this mission alive?

Being stubborn is usually what gets you through missions like this. As I mentioned before line up on it's 6 then fire. Your blasts should trash that bothersome rear turret. Then hug it's tail closely and presto!!! Even a Hellcat or Arrow can manage this.
BTW can you give more details about this particular mission?

Hey, as far as WC fans go, I am probably the most inept pilot. But thats okay, I can still enjoy the game experience, and if I can I'm sure you can. If you have to cheat to continue go for it. Or, if the arrows and hellcats are holding you back, take a thunderbolt in and use a torpedo.

I`d be careful Wolf Dog. Some members of this board would like to get a restraining order of at least 50 web pages between the word cheat and the words wing commander.

Penguin: This is the mission after in the nebula when Navigation has found a new jump point (Kilrathi cloaked the other one) and plans on using it because Confed has called them to that jump point.

Your mission is to escort the Victory to the jump point and get the hell outta there. There are corvettes at every nav, and luckily for me, none of them carry skippers. Your choices for a ship are either the Hellcat or the Arrow.

One of the main problems of that mission is that I tend to use my afterburners a lot, and run out of fuel before that last corvette. Or if I save it, and beat the last corvette, my wingman invariably gets shot down (ejects), and I run out of fuel so I have to fight four vaktoths (sp) at once.

Wolf Dog: I play on Ace. Used to play Rookie because I started on a keyboard, though... I play MUCH better now that I'm on a joystick.

Saturnye: I think I would stick with the Hellcat on this one. If only because it's got a bit more armor and shields than the Arrow. Anyways work on the fighters first. Concentrate on the one your wingman is attacking & provide cover. That should keep your wingman in OK shape. As for the corvettes see if you can lure them near the Victory. She may be an old ship but she sure can waste corvettes. Failing that you'd have to refer to the tactics I outlined below. In order to keep your wingman breathing you could tell him to form on your wing. Then the corvette would concentrate on you since your wingman would be behind you. This makes your job harder but should keep your wingman in one piece.

Alternatively, you can just ignore most of the corvettes. They're capships, and as such you can generally autopilot past them. Or at least I think you can...

It's funny how many of these mission problems arise from people insisting on killing every single Kilrathi out there. You're not required to do that - just get the job done, and come home alive. That's all they want from you.

Yeah, but its oh so much fun to singlehandedly take out a cruiser or carrier. Its just a shame doing so is so ungodly easy as you can either park inside the carrier or right against the cruiser's engines and fire away. Sadly enough, the corvettes may actually be the hardest cap ship to take out in WC3.

Being the stubborn butthole that I am, I HAVE to kill all the corvettes now. It's the principle of the thing.

In any case, I'll definitely stick with that tactic and see what happens, Penguin. That also means that I shouldn't take Maniac with me.

Maybe I should just cheat and use the -mitchell thing and instantly kill the corvettes... but again, it's the principle of the thing.

BTW, Porygon rocks forever.

In the Hellcat, after getting to the NAV point where the jump point is supposed to be, SALVO your torpedoes, and make a run at the CapShip. Your two torps will take it out, and the rest of the ships are Kitty-Litter.

Then, mosey on along to NAV 2, and beat up the Cats there.

For added effect, ask to land at NAV 1.

Does ignoring any or all of the corvettes affect the mission's outcome or the course of the story?

hmm... corvettes. If it weren't for the Vaktoth, id take the Arrow and use the long-range guns to snipe at them and try to stay out of the way of the AMG. However, for this mission, take the Hellcat. load up with six dumbfires. first time you face more than one Vaktoth, run slow at first encounter and release a dumbfire at the closest Vaktoth as soon as the ITTS pipper comes up (the little green diamond). Make sure your aim is good on this one. If facing four, shoot at two of them instead of just one. When there are two left, guns should suffice to finish them. Using this (and going sparing on the burners) you should survive. If you find yourself getting hung up on the corvette, let loose a full stream of gunfire followed by a rocket, which should usually finish them off.
Now for the guns-only part. The most dangerous part of the Vaktoth is the rear turret. However, if you are outside of it's 45 degree firing arc and inside it's turning circle, you can sit there shooting at them (one of the reasons to choose the Arrow) If this doesnt work, take advantage of their tendency to charge. Let them get a ways off, slow down, and shoot just a little high. Just before their shots hit you, dodge upwards. The Vaktoth will turn to follow and run directly into your fire.

flying style: if flying a light fighter with quick-firing guns, I try to close and land as many shots as possible, maximising damage. The exception to this is noted above, for the Vaktoth, Patkhan, and Sorthak fighters. If flying a fighter with guns that fire salvos or cause heavy damage quickly, i tend to use afterburner bursts and slide side-to-side so i have a bigger target to hit, as well as taking any deflection shots I can get instead of waiting for a better shot; make sure you dont rely too heavily on the ITTS for this as the time taken to think about it is often long enough to loose the shot.
