Wing Commander II - damn hard...

OSH

Rear Admiral
I've got almost heart attack during trying to complete K'tithrak Mang A and I don't know, what now... First I can't understand, how it will be possible to destroy Ralatha destroyer (without mention of Fralthra) with this stupid torpedos... When I go under 10000 clicks my shields are destroyed very quick - a few blasts from phase guns and I'm dead. I can't launch torpedo from far distance, because is too slow and will be destroyed by flak guns. It seems, doesn't matter from which side I'm approaching to destroyer - every time I'm destroyed within few minutes. Then other problem: Jalkehi and Grikath> both have turret guns and this makes impossible to attack these bastards from rear, which was very effective on WC 1.
I haven't any conception how I can go further in WC 2. I love this series, have almost all games in original copies, but please, tell me how I can destroy Ralatha, Fralthra or Depot without cheating... This game is really hard and I can simply understand why...

im confused what part you are at. at ktithrak Mang the prince should be pretty easy to take down bc he runs a lot. as far as jalkehi and grikath, attack form the sides not form the rear, use power slide. the biggest asset as a confed pilot is that your ships are a lot faster than most kilrathi ships. use that to your advantage but watch out for collisions they are far more deadly in wc2. finally the last mission of the first expansion aka Special operations 1, is the hardest mission I have ever had in any game lol. took me two weeks to beat.

Okay, from the description it sounds like you're doing K'Tithrak Mang (Series 8), Mission 1. Concordia will be of assistance tagging the Grikaths when you get back that way, so feel free to use your missile compliment on the Jalkehis. For the Ralatha, try afterburning out past 12,000 meters, then turn, come just within that radius and come to a dead stop. Begin the torpedo lock-on sequence, and when you're locked, light your 'burner and don't drop the torp until you're close (say 1500 or so). Then pull out hard. Lord willing you won't have to do more than one pass, but there's a reason why they load more than one torp on the Sabre...

That's what the WC1/II Ultimate Strategy Guide says to do anyways. I don't have my copy of SOTWCU in front of me or else I'd tell you what it says to do as well.

This thread is uncanny.

A couple of years ago I replayed WC2 for the first time in a long time, and made a thread with almost exactly the same title about exactly the same mission.

*Twilight zone music*

WCII...really hard.

The game adjusts the difficulty based on how well you are performing, or so I've heard. Standard tactics for engaging an Enemy Capital Ship and it's fighter escort are:
1: Engage the Fighter Escort: Enemy Fighters are your biggest threat on a Torpedo Run, Many a pilot have been downed on a torpedo run because they see that Cap ship and get excited go in straight away for a missile run and get downed by the fighter screen. If the Cap Ship in question is firing Anti-Matter Guns at you while you're trying to dog fight with it's escort try to draw the fighter escort away from the Cap Ship by feigning a retreat. Kilrathi Fighters will chase after you.
2: Once the Escort has been dealt with you can then Torpedo the Ralatha at your leisure. As Capi mentioned after-burn out to about 12000 meters from your target. At around 11510 meters or so the target will appear on your Targeting Computer in the Right VDU. At that point Kill Your Engines and begin Locking Torpedoes. After you achieve a Torpedo Lock, Close in on your target using afterburners at your discretion. At about 2000 meters release your fish, and pull up, and after-burn away back to about 11510 meters, and begin locking torpedoes for your second run.

The main problem with the final missions in WC2 is when you end up with your ITTS destroyed, and you have to turn back because you can't down capships(or the base). "Restart mission" took 10-15 minutes to load up again on my 386 at the time. Be happy you have Dosbox these days. And kudo's to origin; the gameplay itself was smooth and up to speed on that system!

I hear you there the Target Tracker getting knocked out had to be one of the most annoying things in the world.
