Wing Commander 2 Special Edition

Top Gun, DOS BOX is for WIN 2k/XP onlu, AFAIK.
Anyway, why would you need it if your machine has true DOS???

So not working with Win98. Hmm, wasn't sure myself, like I already said, but I think to remember one guy who got it going. Maybe mixing there things up...
Anyway: true dos doesn't help that much with WC1, you also have to use CPU slow down utilities or to switch of cache, which sometimes doesn't work the way it's meant to work. And sometimes you can get probs with our soundcard. I guess that's why Topgun wanted to use DOSBox.

Apparently I don't have enough Coventional Memory to run WC II
I'm not sure what the command was, but it helps you to free up conventional memory. And no DOS-book here either, so can't look it up. :( Anyway, before running it, make a backup of your current once. - And of course best is to run DOS via bootdisk, so only things under DOS are shortened. Howe much memory do you have free at the moment? And maybe you could also post your autoexec.bat as well as config.sys, so we can help you to free up your conventional memory :)

Well, why would you emulate DOS on a DOS machine? it's like loading a PS emulator on a PS...

There are ways to make any WC game work in ANY DOS+win9x machine, I used to make lots of config.sys and autoexec.bat files back in the day. IF you post your config and autoexec, we can help you make them better, and you'll probably be able to run lot's of games. CFF can help too, he knows a lot of stuff in this subject.

HEy, isn't this thread supposed to be in the tech area?

Yes, the thread is not exactly where it should be ;)
But I just remembered the command: memmaker :D - But don't forget to back up your old config.sys and autoexec.bat. ;) Oh and still best would be when you first post them here, like Edfilho said, before running memmaker. - That one helped me to free up my last missing few memory (you can always do it manually, but why not use it? ;) )

There's a small problem with speed if you run WC1 with modern machines... So far I haven't encountered a slowdown program that wouldn't cause the game to be extremely jumpy with such extreme rates.

depends on your CPU: For my K6-2 400MHzsimply switching off both internal and external cache in BIOS did the trick - This way I got perfect speed ;)
eDIT: And this also works for some more modern CPUs as well. Other somehow get even too slow this way (???)

How do I do this (And when done, will it affect other programs?)

Well it WILL affect other programs - They run slow like hell. I once disabled Cache for my 3Ghz PIV in BIOS. - Booting took over 20mins and everything worked like I was using a 486 CPU :S - So don't change it permanently, Just for that game (and best is to also not start Windows, only DOS. I was able to us Windows XP, but my K6-2 400MHz couldn't even boot into Win98SE - Ok, only waited 10mins, I think, but why running Windows that slow anyway ;) )
To your other question: That totally depends on your mainboard. Some even do not support switching off cache (like my 3.2Ghz PC-MoBo). But normally you can find it in the "Advanced Bios Settings". If it isn't there, just check the other menus. Sometimes it's called L1 Cache and L" Cache instead of External and Internal, so watch for those, too. But be carefull, though (maybe check your Handbook first) - like always when changing stuff in BIOS.

Well, Top gun has a 400mhz machine, it's not that hard to slow down. DOSBOX is really usefull for people with very fast machines (when compared to the hundreds of MHz oneS) and win nt/2k/xp - the DOS-less ones.

Well, if he would use XP or 2k, DOSBox would be still better, even with that CPU. But anyway I guess his main prob is not speed at the moment but conventional memory, which should be quite easy to fix, though.

Yeah, I know about that. My old 120 MHz Pentium is perfect for WC1 if I disable system cache or turn off turbo from BIOS. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find anything like that in the BIOS settings of my newer computer (1,3 GHz AMD, about two and a half years old). But fortunately we have DOSBox! One of these days I'll have to upgrade so I can play Privateer on this...
