Who is this Joan person anyway?

"Joan's" is a play on "Jane's" -- the company that publishes such guides about aircraft and ships in the real world.

I always thought it would be cool if EA did a Joans ATF sim. Sort of a riff on their Janes sim line, with a WC spin. Something that's straight simulation rather than story driven. Plus if they kept the Jane's manual format it would be doubly sweet.

Hehe, I remember thinking the opposite -- after EA got the Janes license, they should have been allowed to call it Jane's All the Sectors Spacecraft. :)

You know... I know someone here in the US Army that actually got the two confused (he's a wingnut... in case you couldn't tell). And no... it wasn't me.

mmm... ATF and the NATO pack didnt quite fill the definition of "simulator", but I think I'm spoiled since I cut my teeth on the first release of SU-27 and early versions of XPlane.

Hehehehe, the first post was really funny, if unintentionally.

Well, the Joan's ATF would be weird, considering how far WC is from anything close ressembling true simulation of actual physics...

Not that I dislike that :) I've been training on stuff like Falcon 4.0, Il-2 and Lock On latelly, and I really miss the simplicity of WC :D

I didn know about that Joan/Jane thing :D also. Good to know now. Janes F15 for example was nice (although a bit unstable, it crashed every twice every hour)
Xcuse me to ruin the topic:
DO NOT DARE TO CALL IL2 OR Lock On a SImulation!!!! THose games are more arcade than any sci-fi game I'v ever played! I dare say this becasue i'v even made WC skins for IL2, and i spent years with both games, and every version of them (i know it doesn really count for computer players, but i'v piloted 2 types of Real planes for 11 times now! Il2 has got nothing to do with realism: remember, "hard to controll" doesn't = "realistic/simulator""!). Falcon 4 is better, but if you want a simulator, you have to go with X-Plane. Although, i hate Xplane casue i built a Hellcat V but it couldn't really fly :(

We can find fault with eachothers simulators of choice till the cows come home...

.... so let me be the first to say that I'll be perfectly content not to fly a real fake airplane as long as the game lets a pretty French girl take advantage of me.

X-Plane is boring and the interface makes no sense. The boring part is not it's fault... any flight sim without combat is yawn. Flying real planes in real life is always fun, but flying boeings around is boooooring.

Maybe Il2 and Lock On do not conform to your personal definition of "realistic"... I'm sure piloting a Cessna is just like flying combat missions on a Corsair or a MiG-29 <jk>. But the games are fun. F-U-N. and several orders of magnitude more COMPLEX then most non-obscure space sims. BTW, Falcon 4.0 is a nice game too. Pitty that you have 30402 fan made patches that make it totally impossible to learn to fly the damn game if you install any of them.

I generally like all sorts of combat flight sims. Even silly stuff like F-22 Lightining III from Novalogic has its charms. If the flight sim community had less rabid fanboys who automatically hate all other games, I'm sure we'd have a lot more flight sims to play today.

Back to WC: the closest to "realistic" we got in any space sim was I-war. And loads of people hated it. I really don't know why, it's no WC but it's pretty challenging and fun. Maybe a WC game with newtonian physics where you got to command a Venture or a Sheffied would have been cool.

People are strange sometimes... In wc communities people used to hate all games that were similiar to WC because they were rip-offs of WC, and hated all games that weren't similar to WC because WC is the best and any other concept of space sim sucks.

I'm NOT refering to this forum nor to its regulars, BTW. It was just the general attitude we got back in the day when Space sims were actually popular.

About the only series of fighter games that I didn't like were the Jetfighter games. I always thought they were just a bit too simplistic. Everything I played from Jane's though was great, I was a particular fan of Longbow II. I wish they would have made some campaign add-ons for their games, though.

The sim market has been kinda blah lately, and I wish it would pick up (especially space sims), so that I could talk myself into getting the Thrustmaster Cougar HOTAS system. :)

All you did was elaborately reword a pretty logical truth: people who like Wing Commander don't necessarily like other games.
