Who is this Joan person anyway?

Hmmm, haven't read through all of above, but it doesn't raelly matter :)
Yes, the one above jokeing was right: flying a Cessna is not like a mig29. But, Flying an An-2 is almost like flying a 2WW soviet transport! :) I'M almost sure non of u know that plane. Make a search, maybe U'll find it :) I tell you, it is oooooold.

Back to WC: i would say that the most realistic space combat flight sim i played with was Mantis. It had realistic vector thrust flight. It was somwthing like WC 1 in graphics, with bugs as enemies (prophecy anyone? :) ). YOu had to protect transports, kill enemy ships, and land. It went impossible, because you had limited fuel for everything! and limited ammo! no laser honey-bunnies that had unlimited energy :D Now that wasn't all just fun, but it was challenging.

All you did was elaborately reword a pretty logical truth: people who like Wing Commander don't necessarily like other games.

That is not true. I said that the reasons people had to hate (not just dislike) the other games were inconsistent and incoherent. That's important.

On other topics...
Antonov An-2? must be old indeed.

Yes, F-22 etc III is the one you drop atomic bombs. Silly and fun :) but fun for a short while. It's way too arcadey.

IMO the best flight sim in pure fun is F-15 Strike Eagle 2. It was insane and kinda stupid, but really fun and easy.

All this talk made me want to play CYAC and Strike Commander. Anyone trued these games in DosBox?

The De Havilland Mosquito was a British Fighter and also had a Bomber Version from WWII which was constructeed of Plywood :D

Wow... I found another person that played Mantis. You know what's funny, though? I thought it was ridiculously easy. The "computer aiming" button certainly helped a lot...

One nifty thing Mantis did... going from killing bugs to killing super-beings. It was like playing a sequel right there in the game. It was about the only thing that game did right, though. Mildly entertaining, but looking back on it it was a dismal experience.

I just bought a beautiful Mosquito (the plane, not the bug) miniature on the newstand these days. There's this weekly collection, you get one metal miniature of a combat airplane and some technical pages on other planes. The mosquito is 5.5" of wingspan and 4.3" long.

I got Spitfire, Hurricane, Bf-109, Ju-87 Stuka, F-104 Starfighter, A-6 Intruder, Tu160 Blackjack, MiG-29, F/A-18...

I DIDN'T get the Zero, Harrier, Nieuport something, F-117 and the Mirage.

I heard of Mantis Fighter once. I think Delance liked it. Archimedean Dynasty was fun, but Aquanox really sucked. But the worse sci-fi sim ever is ultra fighters. It's worse than Battle Cruiser 2000AD

That's a pretty neat concept.

I remember making fun of Mantis before I had Freespace to kick around. It had some kind of auto-play button that made the game really, really easy.

Archmedian Dynasty was a lot of fun, though. It felt like Privateer.

Sure is. I still can't believe the little planes in my shelf. They're look better than most expensive bigger miniatures. They cost close to 10 dollars, and the hard part is convincing the wife that it's money well spent... I'm eagerly awaiting the F-14 and F15.

Probably no game is worse than Ultrafightes.

But a game with an autoplay button? Ugh.

I still got the original Mantis CD :D It was my second game on CD after Myst.:) I never knew there was an auto aim button or autplay feeture????? I never played through athe game, as i was very young then, and mostly i can remember that i was horrified by the animations :D I didn't speak English when I was around 5 or 6 years old... (or 8 ? :) )

I remember a very cool 3d game that came in my 386 in 1991... it had polygonal untextured graphics, and the ship was kinda hovercraft... it had many complicated controls (for the time) and no manual...

I've got 3 Corgi Miniture Aircraft (Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster, all from the RAFs Battle of Britain Memorial Flight) they look great
