What is the most successful class?

I'd say the Excalibur class fighters were the most successful class. Since they were created to prosecute the war against the Kilrathi and they were able to end the war. They were designed for both space and ground missions and they were successful enough to give the Confederation a ground shot at Kilrah which was used to devastating effect to win the war.

They were also a hell of a lot cheaper to produce than the behemoth or any of the carriers.

Were all 12 completed and put into service though?

The other ships were very close to completion. Given the amount of work put into them it makes sense that they were finished and put into use with the Home Fleet...remember it had been decimated during Vukar Tag so it probably needed new carriers.

One could argue that after seeing how they got destroyed, the ones still undergoing construction were stripped for resources and used to build more reliable, battle tested ships rather then putting all their eggs in a few little baskets to be hulled later (to coin the phrase).

They would have had some time to do this given the fact the Confed was also licking its wounds after staggering losses.

One could argue that, if they were totally ignorant of the fact that when most of a ship is done, it's far faster and cheaper to finish it than break down the uncompleted hulls and start from scratch.

As for "more reliable, battle tested ships", most of what made the suicide tactics at Earth succeed was the surprise factor, plus a large amount of civilian craft playing the space equivalent of "human shield". There were more than enough survivors in the retreating forces to get the message back to watch out for that kind of thing. You can't take one weird instance that ended a campaign that was previously successful (Sirius, anyone?) and use it as the model for the entire operational history of a ship or ship class.

Much like Death already said, one unique encounter doesn't mean a design is untenable. IIRC the 12th Hakaga would have been ready roughly 6 months after BoT (they weren't all built at once but one started after another as they moved through stages of production). Sirius did show how the ships would operate in a "classic" engagement. They took a slight beating and kept on pushing.

They weren't putting their eggs in one basket. They also had 20 of their standard class fleet carriers besides the Hakagas. The Hakagas were most likely destined to become the new core of the Home Fleet. They also had the Bhantkara class coming online. If anything the Hakagas were more the tip of the spear than the whole shebang.

Point well taken. The other thing is though, if they were spending all this time building those Hakagas, where/when/and how was Thrakath's Dreadnought built, I was shocked when i saw how big the damn thing was. When would they have had time to do this.

Actually, they had at least 4 of this thngs just before and of the war!

The implication that everyone is building the one ultimate super death mega ship to end all ships is wrong; for every super-dreadnaught we see at the end of a game we can reasonably assume that six months into that ship's development plans were put into motion to design something better. The Kilrathi dreadnaughts were probably planned many, man years earlier to follow the Hakagas into service.
