I am thinking about buying it from Ebay. Is there a version that can play on Win 95 or >?

Yep :) All versions can, you just need to download a patch for w95 which can be found here in the files section

Yes it will. duh. The Patch is located here https://www.wcnews.com/files.shtml
The patch is so the DOS version can play in Windows. If you are getting the DVD version you will also need a DVD drive and a CL Dxr2 or Dxr3 decoder card too.

On the DOS version, I found that the game would sometimes crash when I entered the actual game sections. And everything was abit jerky. The patch cleared it up though.

But this is on WinME aka Windows anti Wing Commander edition.

Well, I have 98...so will it still work? If so, where can I find a link to the patch?
WC4 (and the KS Windows versions of 1, 2 and 3 too btw) will work on Windows 95, 98(SE), ME and XP. They will not work on Windows NT4 or 2000.

I've never even had to do that. Installed the game from within Windows, set up a shortcut to the executable, and away I went, no troubles. Played right in Windows, no reboot, no special start-up files. Ran great on my ol' P133 with 64Mb RAM, as well as my PII450/256Mb, before I went to Win2K.

Of course, the patch gives you some nice command line start-up options....

The wc games are somewhat finicky the only two that have always worked for me are wc1 [although not well, there's something wrong when you can circle all the navs in seconds :) ] and wc:academy. I always wondered why academy seems to be the only wc game that would always run [properly]. Priv needs dos, armada needs dos, wcIV goes nuts. WcIII needs dos, and goes nuts. WcII So1 So2 work ocasionally but generally give out funny errors . Prophecy & SO & the Prophecy test have nasty crashes. Yet WC:Academy has run on every computer I've used.

thanks!

Again, I appreciate it! Now I can FINALLY own all WC games. I will visit e-bay soon....

If WCIV is installed in Windows, I've found that it makes a shortcut on its own. The game works fine for me in the shortcut, and I use Win95. I've also done the exact same thing on a WinME system, and it worked the exact same way, just fine.

The Win95 patch doesn't allow you to calibrate the joystick within the game, but I don't know if the joystick info used with the patch uses the joystick data supplied by the game itself, or by the windows calibration.

I don't know about WC4 just now, but I remember Prophecy makes it shortcut in the C:\Windows\Desktop folder. That may not always be your desktop. For instance, under Windows XP, your desktop is at C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Desktop.
Under Windows 9x/ME, if you have multiple users, your desktop is in C:\Windows\Profiles\User Name\Desktop.
In those cases the shortcut won't appear. Just copy it manually to your desktop dir and you'll be fine though.
