Since the "would it be practical for Origin" topic generated several posts on this, I figured a new thread might help.
For myself, I love the Plasma Gun on the Devastator. Two-shot kill for transports, a little more perhaps for other ships. The number one short-coming of the bug capships, really, was that the engines of the big ones were these big circular monstrosities that masked the fire of their own defensive guns once you were in close. Get in close, match speed, and you could wait forever for a torp lock on the engines unless the fighter cover was strong.
I'm presently playing through WCIII which I was finally able to get, and loving the T-bolt in the early missions with Vagabond on my wing. Beat the skipper mission easily by running out and torping the corvette before it got into Skipper range
