The WC grape board

Hm... the WC Armada flak was ALMOST overdone... but that's relatively how powerful it should have been. The only crappy thing was that torpedo runs were mathematical in nature.

"Hm... full shields? Check. Undamaged armor? Check. Great... now I know that I'm going to be at about 25% armor when I launch that thing. Which I won't even get to see... because the second I hit the launch button, the computer will assume that it was a hit and that the one torpedo will have done the carrier in.... and instead of letting me try to fly out of harms way, I must watch this cinematic.

Only lasting gripe that still makes me wake up screaming: The elevator animation in WC3, with that annoying sound.
Yea, so much atmosphere, I still hear it every time I use an elevator today.

There's the famous Kilrathi taunt "bug" in WC3, too, they say "You pathetic descedant of monkeys" about 90% of the time. But everyone knows that.

even though it has been voiced already, i think my biggest gripe is the lack of cockpits in wc4. yeah, that one really pissed me off.

other than that, its the lack of new wc games, and just getting the older ones to run on my computer, but i can't really fault the series for those gripes.

I always felt kinda....boxed-in when playing WC games. I knew of, and loved the vibrant and detalied universe that I was playing in but it always felt like the only battles that were being fought were the ones in game. It sometimes felt empty despite the richness of it all.

I never saw or never flew trough a fleet. They would sometimes say "escort a fleet" or "defend a fleet" in the missions briefings but I never saw more than tree or four capships in the same area. Does anyone remember the videoclip in WC3 where the Victory joins up with the fleet just before the final mission?
Now that is a fine looking ready-to-kickass fleet. I would have enjoyed maneuvaring trough that fleet. shame.

What would really be a shame is if this thread accidentally tripped and fell down a flight of stairs..

I really really really meant it when I said that I don't intend for this to be a WC bashing thread. I LOVE Wing Commander. Doesn't mean that we can't pick it apart every now and then though, does it? Think of the potential for fan projects to look at this thread and say... "You know... WC4 not having cockpits WAS really stupid. Maybe I should consider putting cockpits into my project".

Again... I love Wing Commander... it's difficult to describe just what a large portion of my life I have spent playing these games. I was just curious as to some of the complaints that other people may have had about the series.

I actually liked those cockpits (WC3-) more than the 'functional' cockpitlessness of WC4. It added so much realism to the game's feel. It's a complaint I have about most (well, in fact, almost every) space sims today - most of them have none, and if any, they are just some struts. Yeah, it's functional, but you can't talk about any feel here - it feels just like a computer game. You don't feel 'there'. I actually don't turn off the cockpits in WC3 when I play it...

And about the corridor scenes in WC3... I didn't mind their existence, either. But, I don't know if it happened only to me, at some point (I don't remember what exactly) during the game the corridor scenes stopped showing up automatically.

Yeah, I know you need something different to talk about. It's just depressing to see "WC Gripe Board" at the top of the czpull on the front page every day. :)

Yeah! It's completely universal, and I have absolutely no idea how the industry decided it was a good idea. I really believe it's part of the reason people don't want to play space sims anymore -- no atmosphere.

Considering the story-rich enviroment WC is in and the story-driven games like Half-Life, its a wonder why the two haven't combined.

WC IV ground attack missions on the hardest difficulty setting. Oi vey. Not that they should have removed them, they were just plain naaaaaasty.

But, that's my worst gripe. Heck, that's practically my only gripe. WC IV cockpits would have been nice, but oh well.
