the perfect fleet

In a nutshell, what would be your vision of the perfect fleet?
From what WC era? and why?
And from who's side?

Althought some will get smart and point out that confed couldn't muster mutch of a fleet during the Kilrahti war, let's just call this a "what if" situation.

For my part, I'd mix it up. WC2 with WC3 confleet capships and fighters.
A generous amount of WC3 dertoyers with maybe four or five cruiser alongside of two escort carriers, one fleet carrier and a Confederation dreadnought. I'd throw in some surviving WC2 destroyers and cruisers for good measure.
As for fighters, everything from WC3 with Rapiers and Sabres along for the ride. Most important of all, my own Excalibur squadron :)

I would have a Couple of Vesuvius-Class, plus about 5 Bengal-Class (including the Claw (the biggest Bengal)) and the Midway, with close support from destroyers and frigates. And Me, well I'll be in a Vampire

I'd have 10 behemoths and 15 midways with lasers, I mean, with super canons. And 30 Hades for protection. I would be leading a fleet of 1000 Dragons.

Seriously, though, I'd be happy with 2 vesuvius, 5 plunkets and 8 murphies, with maybe on midway as flagship.

1 CVE, 1 Destroyer, 1 Corvette....

Send me on my way to Kilrah....

It happened once why not again

If era weren't an object- A Confederation Class, a Plunkett (even though they are fugly), a trio of WC3 destroyers, and a corvette squadron for point defense/hit and fade. It's a group with a good combo of heavy hitting power and fast strike capability- without requiring something along the lines of a super-heavy carrier like a Vesuvius or Midway (Yeah, in it's day the Confed Class was a dreadnought- but in light of how much ships have grown since prophecy, it seems to me more like a heavy carrier)

the wc2 era is my favorite, so i wanna fly with the concordia along with the agincourt, and a few gilgameshs.

Where did you get the cool 3d models of the Gilgamesh and Waterloo class cap ships?

I made them from scratch with AC3D. Amateur stuff really but it gets the job done.

but to be exact, I based myself on as many pictures of WC ships as I could find on the CIC hosted sites. And specifically Hadrian's art section on WCNews. I didn't technically "copy" any data, but I shure as hell spent hours on end admiring his pictures- that person is the best, IMO.

I would command a Kilrathi Dreadnought from my fighter while Taggert would be my second in command. My fighter would be a custom Razor starfighter from WC4 (mainly because I never got to fly it, it's fast and it looks cool). It would be equipped with a cloaking device, slide capability, and the engine system would be converted to that of the Dragon so it would have unlimited afterburners- the guns would be replaced with Tachyon cannons. All ships in the fleet- with the exception of the best pilots- would have a custom black and gold paint job with my families coat of arms. Seether, after MUCH counciling and converting to Christianity would be on my wing flying a Longbow (anyone who's played WC4 and flown the mission with Seether on their wing knows how invincible he is in this ship). The top pilots: new and improved Seether, Primate, Maniac, Vaquero, Flash, Vagabond, and Panther could pick their own fighters- custom make them- and pick their own paint jobs (gold and black colors would be reversed and designs tweaked on my fighter). Every other ace from WC3 and 4 from Confed, Border Worlds and Kilrathi sides would be on the rosters- except for Hobbes.. actually no Kats, I forgot "The Kilrathi do not coexist"- even though I liked some of the Kilrathi aces. Eisen would be commanding the TCS Midway. We would also have the ship from WC4 that disrupts the enemies shields and targeting systems. Kilrathi cruisers and Confed destroyers would round out the fleet. All capships would be armed with skipper missiles. Sosa=Dreadnought coms. Rollins=Midway. I'd let Tolwyn control the disruptor ship. The Intrepid's Helm girl would be my personal assistant :D.

Hadrian's artwork is just a bunch of renderings using the original WC2 models, AFAIK.

Well then, whatever his method was, I glad SOMEONE did it. 'Cause I needed those pics as starting point.

Hey LOAF, you're well versed in Wing Commander lore, would you like to describe your vision of the perfect fleet? -I'm kinda really curious over here dude.

I've seen destroyers, cruisers and all varieties of carriers... now I'd like to see them functioning with a support fleet: electronic warfare corvettes, fast advance scouts, hospital ships, missile transports, minelayers, minesweepers, tenders, command ships and the like. A fleet of a million bazillion Vesuvii blowing things up might be cool, but I think seeing the spaceborn equivalent of oilers deliver fresh hydrogen or antimatter to a carrier would be all the more interesting.

Failing that, I'd like to see some sort of interestingly stylistic fleet -- the pre-war/Pilgrim War battleship fleet, for instance, styled to reference Roosevelt's Great White Fleet.

Didn't we see a lot of that in WC1, escorting transports and the like?

patience... besides, wouldnt the pre-war fleet be equivalent to what we had after WW1, WW1 being versus the (Yan? - whoever those first aliens we warred with were). Pre-Yan would be the Great White Fleet... I'm going to have to dig out those old timelines again, if they exist (pre-WC1). Care to provide convenient links?

I agree with LOAF, a fleet with a full complement of support craft would be cool. At least in WCP we have SAR, Refueling and AWACS craft, not to mention a dedicated Marine boarding transport.

Yeah, but it always just amounted to calling a Drayman something different in each mission. (It wasn't as common for Confed, really, but the earlier games certainly did like to define all sorts of neat roles for Dorkir and Dorkathi.)

I'm thinking of the way the Concordia is described in Action Stations -- "white paitn glimmering in the harsh sunlight", or somesuch.

(Coupled with the idea from the Pilgrim War history that Confed builds a big fleet of battleships to end the war.)

I don't think we know much about the actual fleet earlier in the timeline than that.

That pre-war timeline I did is here: https://www.wcnews.com/enc/part1.shtml

Give me a hundred good Raptor pilots, and I'll give you peace from galaxy's end to the other...

Uh... haven't I...???

Hey... I have a strang feeling of De-Ja-Voo...

I'm not greedy. One Vesuvius supercarrier and a couple destroyer and cruiser escort are all I need to rush the Kats. Why it works: I'll not be stupid enough to amass Hellcats, what I want is Bearcats and a few bomber squadrons. And depending on time, I want either a few Excalibur squadrons or a single Dragon one with me in command. Sure these two cost a lot, but since they were built already, why would you want to scrap'em?

As per the topic:
Colonel Blair: " Carriers don't fly themselves, Admiral."
Admiral Tolwyn "Quite right Colonel. It is the men, isn't it."

While having a lot of powerful ships has its advantages, the larger the fleet, the harder it is to coordinate... Plus you might as well forget any kind of stealth advantage.
