Speculation- 2770

Dragon1

Rear Admiral
Hi everybody!

We have seen some glimpses in the past of what the future of the Terran Confederation may have looked like- games like Privateer Online that were never made displayed some cool stuff from the projected 28th century.

What do you guys think Wing Commander in the 28th century would have been like?

Politicially and socially, would the Terran Confederation had many years of peace, or would there had been constant warfare with the Kilrathi remnant and Nephilim?

Technologically, what advances would have been made? Would Confed have stagnated in peacetime? Would 'Roddenberry' (like the Enterprise) type Exploration vessels been built? What would the 28th century Fleet Carrier be like? Larger or smaller than the Midway class? Any Midway CV's still in service?

What do you guys think?

They'd have time travel, though maybe only the ability to travel a few seconds at a time, and maybe only into the future.

I think the Landreich will become much more dominant after False Colors. I also think the Empire of Kilrah will have a resurgance with distant relatives of the Imperial line, such as Murragh Cakg dai Nokhtak from False Colors, leading it. Although I have not played Prophecy and SO, I do believe the Nephilim will return in force again.

I can't see how the Landreich would become more dominant, and I can't see how they would want to become more dominant.

I think it is almost certain that the Nephilim return through, if nothing else, a traditional jump hole. But theres no telling when that might occur.

I would like to know what became of the Mantu, their race interested me from the moment they were first mentioned. Of course, how will the Mantu react to Confed? From what we know of the Kilrathi it is easy to imagine that the Kilrathi tried to conquer a peaceful race and were just plain outmatched. Would the Mantu be an ally or an enemy to Confed?

Well, this seems like a perfect opportunity to mention LOAF's Mantu brief.

I wrote a brief history of the Mantu, based on the three sources in which they're referenced: Fleet Action, Heart of the Tiger and the ICIS Manual. I hope this helps. Please feel free to post it anywhere the Mantu question comes up.

--

The major conflict between the Empire of Kilrah and the Mantu began around 2429. Terran historians believe that it was borne out of Kilrathi aggression towards civilian Mantu ships. The Mantu, an paranoid, insular race of explorers and prospectors, reacted to these attacks with extreme prejudice, pursuing a major invasion of Kilrathi space. It was warfare on a scale unprecedented and overwhelming to the Kilrathi of the 25th century. The conflict ultimately ended around 2431 when the Mantu withdrew their forces to pursue warfare in another theater.

Details of the Mantu’s ‘other war’ are scarce, save that it lasted some 235 years and concluded in 2666 with a victory on their part. In the years that followed their war, the Kilrathi demonized the Mantu as per their own sociological imperative. The Cult of Sivar religion, founded on the Prophecy of Sivar’s threat that the Kilrathi would be annihilated by their Star Gods should they ever falter in battle, would not allow for a conflict to be so ignobly ended. The Kilrathi came to believe that the war was not over but rather that the Mantu were constantly preparing for a second attack. In reality, the Mantu had offered no such threads and have never shown any practical interest in continuing the war with the Kilrathi.

This belief, however, gained even more strength among the Kilrathi in 2598 when a small border skirmish broke out between the two nations. The battle, instigated by a Kilrathi attempt to cross the Mantu border, ended in a draw but it further reinforced Kilrathi paranoia regarding their former enemies. During the fighting the Kilrathi learned that Mantu technology had advanced more quickly than had their own, creating an even greater impetus to prepare for the questionable threat of a future Mantu invasion.

In 2667 a long range probe informed the Kilrathi leadership that the Mantu had finally completed their centuries old war with a neighboring race. Two years later, similar reports claimed they were reapportioning their forces. At the height of the Terran-Kilrathi War, an Empire truly convinced it was threatened on two fronts prepared for the worst…

and a bit from the ICIS on them..

Significantly, there is no suggestion in the historical record that the initial aggressor in the conflict was the Mantu. Probably the Kilrathi assaulted non-military Mantu vessels in much the same way that they did at the beginning of the Terran conflict.

The Kilrathi fear of the Mantu’s return is well documented, but may well be merely a paranoid, atavistic response to an enemy left alive and at large (another well-documented trait of Kilrathi psychology). There is nothing substantial in the historical record to suggest any explicit promises of vengeance from the Mantu civilisation against the Kilrathi.

Furthermore, there is nothing in the current enemy’s tactics or technology that corresponds to anything specific in the historical record of the Mantu. If the enemy is the Mantu they have completely changed their modus operandi in the last 250 years.

I have a slightly improved versino of the Mantu writeup:

The major conflict between the Empire of Kilrah and the Mantu began around 2429. Terran historians believe that it was borne out of Kilrathi aggression towards civilian Mantu ships. The Mantu, an paranoid, insular race of explorers and prospectors, reacted to these attacks with extreme prejudice, pursuing a major invasion of Kilrathi space. It was warfare on a scale unprecedented and overwhelming to the Kilrathi of the 25th century. The conflict ultimately ended around 2431 when the Mantu withdrew their forces to pursue warfare in another theater.

In the years that followed, the Kilrathi demonized the Mantu per their own sociological imperative. The Cult of Sivar religion, founded on the Prophecy of Sivar's threat that the species would be annihilated by Star Gods should they ever falter in battle, would not allow for a conflict to be so ignobly ended. The Kilrathi came to believe that the war was not over but rather that both sides were preparing for a second, prologned fight. In reality, the Mantu had offered no such threats and have not since shown any practical interest in continuing the conflict.

This belief, however, gained even more strength in 2598 when a border skrimish broke out between the two nations. The battle ended in another draw. At the same time, it further reinforced Kilrathi paranoia regarding the Mantu: during the fighting it became clear that Mantu technology had advanced more quickly than that of the Kilrathi. Overlooked entirely by the Kilrathi was the fact that they had again instigated the fighting - in the two and a half centuries since the close of the war there has not been a single recorded border violation on the part of the Mantu.

Details of the Mantu's 'other war' are scarce, save that it involved a neighboring race or races and that it lasted some 235 years, finally ending in 2666. The next year a long range probe informed Kilrathi leadership that the centuries old conflict had concluded with a Mantu victory. Two years later, similar reports claimed forces were being reapportioned along the Mantu-Kilrathi border. So, at the height of the Terran-Kilrathi War, an Empire honestly convinced it was threatened on two fronts prepared for the worst...

As for what will happen in the hundred years between Prophecy and Privateer 2... I suppose I'd go with the various unused storylines intended for future novels and games:

* The Landreich would eventually come into conflict with the Confederation. This was Andrew Keith's proposed first sequel to False Colors. The story would be analagous to the War of 1812, finally cementing the Republic's independance from the Terran Confederation. I would caution against the idea that they become 'more dominant' in this period simply because the Landreich has always been a unique concept and not 'the Confederation Junior'.

* Kilrah will rise again. This has always been considered an eventuality by the post war stories and there were numerous attempts to speed it up in proposed plots (the recently published Privateer 3 script looms large). The Kilrathi Civil War will eventually decide a new dominant clan, a new seat of power and a new emperor... and these factions will come together, build up their military and once again make war on humanity. Murragh is an aside told in a single story: he will martial his own faction, try to take his position as emperor and fail - that was the second and final unwritten False Colors sequel, casting the prince as Bonnie Prince Charles.

* The Nephilim conflict will conclude as humanity establishes a beachead in their space, fends off a second attack, learns more about them and achieves a final, complete victory.

Whatever happens Wing Commander would just feel more right again if any future game puts you in a cockpit fighting those fur covered meanies with whiskers.

Personally id like to play once on their side helping them regain their status in galactic conquest. Gathering a ragtag group of veteran warriors and starting to carve out your personal empire. Later taking on the corupt hairless confed monkies who exploit the noble kilrahti clans. For finale liberating some of the the capital ships confed stole with their peace treaty and put a fear of god into the for kilrathi shall rise again.:D Thats one way how things could go.

That would be cool. Or if the main character was some kind of ex-Confed mercenary that had to gather a bunch of Kilrathi warriors to defend against an invasion of their space from the Nephilim or some other force.

maybe something along the lines of your a mercenary in a company of mercenaries out on the frontier and you work your way up by any means necessary (ie gathering dirt on them so they are forced to leave, pressuring them to go, or outright killing them) until you run the company and build it up.

now that Ive written it out it sounds a little fanboyish to me, but whatever.

How long would the Midway class CVX's be in service for? Any speculation of the Confed fleet carrier of the late 28th century? Larger or smaller than the Midway? New Shield weapon technology? Would the torpedo still be the chief A/S weapon?

I would think Confed's first action would be a strike through the captured wormhole.

Why would that be Confed's first action. What about recon and all that stuff?

Possibly Confed would reverse engineer the Nephilim gate technology and learn how to create stable jump gates to any point in the galaxy, or a network of jumpgates for civilian use. Didn't the Tri-Systems Confederation have something like this in Privateer 2?

Well, carriers seem to be typically designed for a fifty-year lifespan when budgets permit, so I would figure that whatever design replaces the Midway will be nearing the end of its lifespan come 2770, and its replacement would be the hot new thing.

Sticking with the WWII analogy inherent to Wing Commander, the Midway class would probably be replaced by something analogous to the United States' Nimitz class carriers (call them Banbridge class or something to keep WC flavor).

The Nimitz class carrier was the first (and only, so far) American nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Nuclear power gives it greater speed and range than was previously possible. Also, it depends on anti-air missiles for defense rather than turreted flak guns.

By analogy, then, the "Banbridge" class would have a new type of power source that would allow speed and maneuvering above what was previously possible (maybe they find a way to make the type of engines used by the Dragons cheaper after a few decades). It would carry as much of a complement of fighters as the Midway, be likewise capable of independant operation, and would use missile turrets instead of laser turrets. The technology of its fighters would probably also be as much above WCP fighters as WCP fighters are above WC1 fighters--enough to make the Vampire feel like a Raptor.
