Space Sim First Look: Space Cowboy (December 29, 2005)

Isaac Alexander let us know about the new English language release of the Korean massively multiplayer space sim called Space Cowboy by Masang Soft. The game is built around ship customization and enhancement with minor RPG elements. Formations of ships can be coordinated and certain combinations create powerful effects. Space Cowboy has standard missions and support for large fleet engagements. A substantial portion of the game takes place in atmospheric combat. Controls are mouse driven like Freelancer, and different options for voice chat are also built in. The futuristic storyline is divided into phases. Episode II is currently unfolding with plans for the third under way. A small number of "main character" NPCs exist in the universe and interaction with them influences the story. Registration, downloading and playing the 600 meg game seem to be free. Korean readers can find a ton of information and additional screenshots at the Space Cowboy mgame community site.

Is it just me, or do all these new space sims look exactly like Freelancer? It's something with the external POV and the UI... It just looks like a bunch of Freelancer screenshots. In Korean. Oh, well. Still looks kinda cool, though - what with all the other ships parked on that runway. The environmental textures look really blurry too - that can't be a good thing. Gonna see if I can figure out how to install it.

The installation is really easy. Most of those screenshots are in Korean, but this update is about the English release of the game. The focus on atmospheric flight missions gives it a bit of a different feel than Freelancer. Speed is controlled somewhat differently, and there's no Diablo style health potions.

Well that's an improvement. Are the textures that blurry in the game? Or is that just a bad video card used to take the screenshots?

Yeah, they don't seem so bad. There's low, medium and high visual settings, and that seems like low or medium. I was running it in 1600x High, and the first arena style there has some pretty water and is an overall better looking environment than the ones pictured above.

I've heard about this game for a while at various video game forums. I was initially confused because I wasn't able to find any information on it through the internet nor through the CIC (it says something that the CIC is quickly becoming the go-to point for information on anything space related). Now that I've actually seen it, it looks pretty neat, a step up from the 10940 other Freelancer clones from east of the Prime Meridian. Definitely have to try it sometime.

Yay! I think a lot of it was in Korean until just recently. The English website seems like it's fairly new, so it would have been hard to find information on it until recently. One thing I couldn't figure out is how they do business. I was able to register, download the 600 meg game and go take some pot shots at Korean fighter pilots all without ever being asked to pay anything. The mgame site has ads, but the Masang sites don't. I figure I must just have missed something, but I don't see it.

I've got to admit, that is a very un-orthodox registration form. Now i just hope my computer holds out for the download.

I really don't know how they would. You don't have to put anything in the registration that really traces back to you.
