The Orion's... *not* neat because it only mounts a single missile hardpoint.
Ehh, I seldom use missile in Privateer anyway.

The Galaxy is... the best ship for being a pirate.
If by that you mean you can scoop up loads of cargo while you let the pirates do the hard work of, well, being pirates.

The Orion is heavily protected...
That's true, but sometimes I'm lazy and let the shields deplete to almost nothing - I find it takes a
very long time to recharge shields.

My advice for spicing up the game is: Try the Orion.
Really, it should be up to you. Try saving them as separate games if need be. I personally go through the Orion
and the Galaxy before starting the main game, but I can do that because I'm patient. So patient, in fact - I hadn't the time to finish RF before uni started, but I'm currently working for Murphy with a kill score approaching 2000 (ha, ha Maniac) and a bank account nearing 4 million.
Anyway, I found the Orion okay, provided you loaded it up with full upgrades - which can take a large chunk out of your savings. Also, it's a pity all the ship you can buy only have two guns (excepting the Centurion, of course).
I haven't ever 'retired' from the Centurion myself, though if I were to do it, I'd take the Galaxy - it's not too fast, but it's manoeuvrable enough, and the loads of cargo you get with it is a big bonus.
