Priv and WC2...

I'm getting sick of playing Priv2 for now, and I want to play the original Privateer and Wing Commander 2, but when I changed my DOS shortcut to play P2, it prevented me from playing the other two games, because it said I didn't have enough memory. Can I change it back, so I can play WC2 and Priv?

I suggest creating an entirely new shortcut, so you don't have to keep changing things around.

Here's the config for Priv and WC2:

config.sys:
DOS=HIGH,UMB,NOAUTO
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM 16384 /I=B000-BFFF
FILESHIGH=25
BUFFERSHIGH=25
device=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\display.sys con=(ega,,1)
Country=972,862,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\country.sys
DEVICEHIGH=C:\ATAPI\TASATAP.SYS /D:ATA001

autoexec.bat:
same as for Priv2

If you still have trouble with this configuration, there are several other things that can be done. Let's try this first, though.

Will do, Stinger, sir. But I'm just too tired now...

Didn't seem to work.

Once I got into DOS after going through my new shortcut, it said it was preparing to set up my DOS-based program, but then it just... well, stopped. The "C:\" thing never came up.

Just right below where it said "Windows 98 is now starting your MS-DOS based program".

Use the shortcut; hit F8 just after the RAM count to get to the boot menu. Select Step-by-step confirmation and tell me where it stops.

Ohhh... so that's what you want, eh?

Anyway, it stopped at this line:

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM 16384 /I=B000-BFFF

Yeah, it should be; that's a typo.

Lemme fix that...

All right, I tried it out, and <groan> it didn't work. When I typed in "D:\" it said invalid drive directory or something like that.

You know, just forget it. I went ahead and got rid of my Privateer 2 shortcut, and now WC2 and Privateer work. When I want to play P2 again, I'll just re-create the shortcut.

BTW, do you think you can get sound to work on my WC2 and Privateer?

Oh, I was putting in 5 for the IRQ. Duh.

No!! Boo hoo!!

I spoke too soon (I shouldn't do that!) It did not work. I think I may have insufficient expanded memory (at least that's what it says) for sound. Is there a way to get more?

Yup. We can get rid of the CD-ROM drivers. Before doing that, there's a bit of preparatory work that needs to be done.

Copy the following files from your Privateer CD to your C:\PRIVATER directory:

PRIV.TRE
RF.TRE

Then, look in your C:\PRIVATER directory for the PRIV.CFG file. Change its contents to this:

=C:\PRIVATER\PRIV.TRE

Next, change the contents of RF.CFG to this:

=C:\PRIVATER\RF.TRE

Once that is completed, the game will play from the hard drive rather than from the CD. In your config.sys, remove the last line (the DEVICEHIGH=C:\ATAPI... line). Then, in your autoexec.bat, remove the MSCDEX line. That should do it.

Thanks for the advice.
